How to Design Crafts and Printables with Free Clip Art

It's easy and fun to design your own clip art crafts - you can make gifts, cards and crafts for friends and family with graphics, borders and clip art photos or pictures. The projects you design with clip art don't necessarily need to be printed paper crafts. You can use clip art to make many types of creative arts and crafts.

Clip Art Crafts: Quick Mini Cards 

Design a Set of Place Cards or Mini Gift Tags

It's easy to make your own small cards using any word processor like MS Word with free clip art. Simply create a 2-column table with row heights the size of your finished card. I usually make a table that covers most of a single page, then divide it into 2 rows. This gives me 4 place cards or mini gift cards that will fold in the middle to make a tent card or small folder.

Next, add clip art pictures to the lower half of each cell. (This is the front of the folded card.) You can create borders for each card using basic table properties, or import a pre-designed graphic frame and size it to fit inside the table cell. Be sure to leave a bit of space around the edge of each cell to cut the cards apart after printing.

If you want to add blocks of color, create those to size of just less than half the height of the cell and place them as a background to the area you want to color, then add text or graphics on top of the color block. Or, simply choose a background color for the table or cell to use. (In my sample, I used different color blocks to define the front and back of each card and two different colors for the cards on the sheet.)

You can copy the same design into all 4 cells, or design 4 different cards on a single sheet.

In the lower half section of each card, add a guest name, or leave a space blank to write the name in later by hand.

Print, cut apart and enjoy your custom table cards!

Clip Art Crafts: How to Make Bookmarks with Word Processing Software 

Useful as gift tags, too

It's easy to make a set of artistic bookmarks with free clip art. You can use your trusty word processor and clip art, or create a cut and paste collage of favorite clips and craft embellishments (perhaps from scrapbook leftovers) on a nice piece of card stock.

WORD PROCESSOR METHOD: Create a landscape page (wider rather than longer for the larger dimension) then create a table with 4 equally sized columns to fill up the page - each column will become one bookmark. Next, add interesting borders around the cells and any background color you wish.

Insert clip art images or pictures from your computer, digital camera or graphics collections into the columns.

Size the graphics to fit within the table columns or use a text box or frame to crop out what you don't want to print. Alternatively, you can edit your art or photo in a graphics program to make it the exact size you need.

Using the same technique (using a frame or text box) add words that will print on top the pictures or add boxes of text with white or colored backgrounds that print on the graphics or around them. For example, make the graphic you add to each bookmark smaller, so it's a decoration at the top, middle or bottom of the bookmark, then add a bit of poetry or a special quote to the rest of the table column blank space areas.

Duplicate your design on the rest of the table cells/templates, or make 3 different designs for the rest of the page, then print and cut apart your 4 bookmarks.

COLLAGE METHOD: Use the bookmark template or measure off 4 sections on your card stock and cut apart to make blank bookmarks. Decorate each blank with clip art cutouts, magazine clips, headlines, bits of ribbon and what not, then seal the entire thing with laminating film or clear acrylic coating to preserve and protect your creation.

Punch a hole at the top and thread with yarn, ribbon or string. Attach a bead, craft button or tassel and enjoy your new art bookmarks.

It's easy to make your own custom napkin bands from clip art. I made my own Thanksgiving napkin bands this year, and made matching place cards to go with them.

Here's how easy it is to design napkin ring wrappers with clip art.

Use your word processor to create a table that's about 7 inches wide and as tall as your sheet of paper. Add a border to each row to use as a guide line for cutting.

Divide the table into rows (4 to 6 depending on how tall you'd like your napkin bands to measure).

Place a clip art image in each row, centered between the top and bottom and both sides of the row. Add text or word art text to each row.

Print the page and cut out the bands along the guide lines; fasten a band around each napkin with a bit of tape.
