Welcome to Ivan Zoot clipper cutting

Clipper cutting rocks. Welcome to the place where I will share all manner of neat-O clipper cutting stuff. You are invited to contribute your clipper cutting stuff, too. This web page can become the center of OUR clipper cutting universe.

I am ClipperGuy. The world and the professional beauty industry know me as ClipperGuy... and for good reason. I travel the world sharing clipper cutting live on stage at trade shows and educational events. Through this web page I hope to inform, inspire and educate the masses yearning for more information on the exciting world of clipper cutting. Clipper cutting is a fun hobby, a great career, a big money maker and just plain cool. Welcome to all my new clipper friends.

My NEW Guinness World Haircutting Records

Yesssss!!!!! On August 22, 23, 2008 I reclaimed all 3 records.

World's fastest haircut
Most haircuts in 1 hour
Most haircuts in 24 hours
Those are the records and they are mine again.

I did the world's fastest haircut in 55 sec. The prior record of 1 min. 11 sec was broken by me 8 times on eight different heads on Friday afternoon.

The record for most haircuts in one hour was 23. I completed 34 perfect, complete haircuts in one hour to smash that now-obsolete record.

I then went on to cut for 23 more hours and completed 340 haircuts. I beat the old record by 40 cuts.

Stay tuned for more info on these records. I am soon to release my next book... ClipperGuy Says... Time is Money, Ivan Zoot's Secrets of the World Haircutting Records. This book will share my cutting efficiency system so that anyone can pick up the pace while maintaining quality and customer service. Make more money, have more fun.

I offer up a HUGE thank you to all who helped me make these new records happen.

My old Guinness World Haircutting Record

That was a lot of clipper cuts!

This is a photo of one of my sons holding up one of my older haircutting world records. This is the one for most haircuts in one hour. 22 haircuts in one hour. That is right, all 22 of 'em start to finish inside one hour. This was a publicity stunt and a charity event for my shop back in 1998. It worked great and was fun for all.

My NEW Guinness World Haircutting Record Trophy Buckle

Lookie at this big one!

24 K gold, Sterling Silver and black enamel. This is one of the biggest custom buckles that they make. Look for it on me at a show near you soon.

Clipper Tips

I have posted clipper tips excerpted from my book (referenced above). These are the golden nuggets of clipper cutting wisdom I have accumulated in my travels and through my experience. If you like the ones listed here... buy my book to have 'em all!

If you have clipper tips of your own I want to learn them and I would be happy to post them here for all to share. Send 'em to me. Email them to me... or hit the guest book section below.

Clipper Tips - Clippers

excerpted from my book

Open Wide - Open your adjustable blade clipper to the number 1 position when cutting clipper-over-comb. You will get better blending, smoother feed and velvetier results.

Spot A Spot - Provide your client a focal point to keep their head up and straight. Halfway through a haircut, if the client moves and vertical is no longer vertical, it is not the client's fault.

Wider is Better - Clipper combs are designed to be wider than the clipper blade. They provide a smooth flat surface off of which to cut. Safer too.

Clipper Tips - Trimmers

excerpted from my book

Trim Early - Do not wait until the last stages of the haircut to trim and detail the hairline. By trimming early you get a better look at how the finished cut is shaping up.

Point For Balance - Use an extended index or ring finger in contact with the client to balance and control a trimmer.

Look Shifty - Turn the finished sideburn towards the mirror. Stand at the far sideburn and shift your gaze back and forth from the sideburn on your side to the one in the mirror to easily match the two.

Clipper Tips - Blades

excerpted from my book

Rack 'Em Up - Use a blade rack to keep blades organized and protected.

Follow Orders - Always keep your blades in the same order in your blade rack. You will instinctively reach for the right blade when they all have their own regular resting spots.

Clipper Tips - Maintenance

excerpted from my book

Keep Your Cool - Use a spray coolant to keep your blades running smooth and cool during extended cutting. Extends blade life, too.

Brush Up - A toothbrush or fingernail brush must be regularly used to clean loose clippings from the blade area. Longer, sharper blade life will be your reward.

Clipper Tips - Business Tips

excerpted from my book

Go Short - The best way to build a short haired clientele is to wear short hair. You've got to be a buyer if you're going to be a seller. Lead by example.

Cut Corners - Taper a small amount of the front corner and offer the client to inspect the length. Avoid cutting the same haircut twice because it was not short enough the first time.

Take a Walk - Book appointments on the hour and half hour. Take walk-ins in between to keep your chair full all the time.

Clipper Tips - Kid Tips

excerpted from my book

Pull Up a Stool - Put small children on a wooden stool. A child on a stool will squirm less and sit better.

Hot Wheels for Hot Cuts - Place a small toy car under a child's chin. If they can hold the car there for the duration of the haircut, they can keep it. Less wiggles and a strong marketing ploy too.

Let's Talk Andis Tools

This is my page of info on the latest and greatest from Andis

The world of Andis tools... You love this stuff.
ClipperGuy's Andis Tools Page
Why read about it here when you can look at it over there. Stop reading and just make the click over.

Let's talk technique - clipper cutting explained and explored

#1 Backhand clipper cutting

Backhand clipper cutting is one of my favorite techniques to share. I did not invent this technique. It was shared with me by an old barber at a class. That is how it is supposed to work. I have made this one of my signature techniques in live presentations for many years.

Hold the clipper backwards in your hand. Just like in the picture. Hold the comb in the same hand with your two smallest fingers. The other hand is for holding hair sections. Clipper off hair beyond you fingers in classic clipper-over-finger style. Drape the cord over your shoulder or wrap it around your arm to get it out of the way.

Backhand clipper cutting lets you use the clipper in the upper half of the head, above the crestline. Layering is done like with shears or a razor, but you get the texture of the clipper blade, the speed of clipper cutting, the safety of using a clipper.

The technique is smooth, fast, and easy. Clients and co-workers will be amazed to watch you clipper cut in this way. Try it today.

Let's talk technique - clipper cutting explained and explored

#2 Clipper combs

Clipper combs are one of the keys to great clipper cutting. Clipper combs come in two flavors, white and black. Light hair, dark combs and dark hair, light combs. You can't cut what you can't see. Work smarter not harder. The contrast against the comb makes it easy to see lines, marks and steps in tapering and guidelines for cutting.

Andis clipper combs are the best. They are wider than the clipper blade. This makes it hard to slip off of the comb when cutting clipper-over-comb. If you bump the client in the head with the running clipper blade and create a divot like a golf course, that would be a bad day at the clipper cutting office.

A good clipper comb is smooth and flat and has a handle so you can hold it properly between your thumb and forefinger. This hand position allows you to pitch and wiggle the comb to alter its position relative to the client's head and create smooth, beautiful tapering.

Let's talk technique - clipper cutting explained and explored

#3 Overhand clipper cutting

Overhand clipper-over-comb cutting is cutting with your hand over the clipper. This technique is used when clipper tapering in the lower half of the head.

This hand position allow you to keep your back straight, your elbows in, your shoulders down and maintain a comfortable body position.

See the image to the right for proper overhand clipper grip.

Let's talk technique - clipper cutting explained and explored

#4 Underhand clipper cutting

Underhand clipper cutting is cutting with your hand under the clipper. This technique is used when clipper layering or blending in the upper half of the head.

This hand position limits awkward stretching and positions the cutter properly for smooth cutting and full control of the clipper and the flow of the hair.

See the image to the right for proper underhand clipper grip.

Let's talk technique - clipper cutting explained and explored

#5 I want to buy a clipper, which clipper should I buy?

This is the number one question I get at clipper cutting classes, shows and events. Unfortunately it is not that simple.

To get the job done well you really need three tools.

You need a high power, rotary motor, detachable blade clipper. This tool is used for fast bulk take-down, high volume clipper-over-comb and other heavy cutting. The Andis BGRc is the NEW category leader for this important tool.

You need a high speed, magnetic motor, adjustable blade clipper for perimeter tapering. The world famous, best selling, Andis Improved Master is pictured above. This tool is primarily used in the bottom half of the head on dry hair. Tapering, fading, blending, the real master craftsmanship of clipper cutting, is this tools forte.

You need a trimmer. T-blade or square blade, it is your choice. The busy professionals all prefer corded tools over cordless ones. More power, all day. The Andis T-Outliner is the best selling tool in the world.

Let's talk technique - clipper cutting explained and explored

#6 Choose your weapon - clipper motor types

Magnetic motors - High blade speed, low blade torque. The blade moves so fast (7,200 SPM) that you can hardly see it. The blade can be easily stalled with pressure from your thumb. Magnetic motor clippers are ideally suited to dry hair clipper cutting in the lower half of the head.

Pivot motors - Lower blade speed (3,600 spm) but much higher blade torque (power). You can see that the blade moves slower, buy you cannot stall the blade. Pivot motors are great for thick, heavy, wet hair. The lower blade speed means less friction and as a result less blade heat. Great for student or novice, slower cutters. Light weight, compact size.

Rotary motor clippers - High blade speed and high blade torque. The best of both, but at a price, size and weight. More power, more speed = larger motor. Every cutter needs one, but you will not do all your cutting with it. Great for light weight, small compact trimmers and mid sized general cutting tools. The biggest and baddest clippers will likely be rotary motors.

Let's talk technique - clipper cutting explained and explored

#7 Clipper care - Oil your clipper

Every client, every time. Just 3 drops. 2 drops on the running teeth of the clipper blade and 1 drop on the inside corner of the cutter blade. Let the clipper run a few more seconds to spread the oil, just a thin film between the blades is all that is needed. Shut the clipper off and wipe up any excess clipper oil. If you can see the oil, there is too much oil. Every client, every time.

I'm not a blogger, but I'll send you a blog just to tell you how much I appreciate
your Andis video clips on numerous haircutting tips. I'm going to try each one of
these techniques and work at perfecting them. I'm not sure if you used a closed or open blade when you pulled the top hair up and cut it. I would guess a closed 000.
I'd like to see you do a full haircut using the 4-3-2-1 attachments and hopefully
getting some tight zooms from the camera for good viewing. I'm sure others would appreciate you doing this too. Having been away from barbering for such a long time and learning all over again, I thank you sharing your knowledge with everyone.
