Meeting Clive Barker

In 1987, I met Clive Barker for the first time at the WorldCon Science Fiction convention in Brighton, England (CONspiracy '87). At the time, I had heard of him, but had not actually gotten around to reading any of his work.  However, he was such a delight at all of the panels I attended and so immediately engaging and interesting, that I picked up a couple of volumes of the Books of Blood and Weaveworld and started reading the short stories that weekend.    As soon as I got home, I read Weaveworld and I've been a big fan ever since.

Over the years I've met Clive a number of times and he's always been unfailingly polite and he shows a remarkable and unflagging interest in his fans. He's purely a delight, so despite the long (very long!) lines at signing engagements, if you ever get the opportunity, definitely attend a signing.

Clive Barker at a Glance

Clive Barker (born 5 October 1952) is an English author, film director and visual artist best known for his work in both fantasy and horror fiction.

Barker came to prominence in the mid-1980s with a series of short stories which established him as a leading young horror writer. He has since written many novels and other works, and his fiction has been adapted into motion pictures, notably the Hellraiser series.

Out of the Closet

Clive Barker officially outed himself as gay in the mid 90s and he lives with his partner, photographer David Armstrong, and David's daughter Nicole, in Los Angeles.

To read some of Clive's thoughts on sexuality and the media's interest in homosexuality, check out this Lost Souls interview and this interview in January magazine.

Clive's first interview where he discussed his homosexuality was in the February 1995 issue of The Advocate. I have yet to find a copy of it online.

Clive Barker at the Movies

Clive Barker as film director

Clive Barker has not been as nearly successful as a filmmaker as he has novelist. Still, I am quite fond of both Hellraiser and Lord of Illusions. Salome and The Forbidden are early experimental works by Clive and really for completists only. I have them and find them, urm, interesting...
