The Film Utopia Blog

New Cultural Perspectives in the age of Digital Media Production

www.filmutopia.co.uk.
Film making is more than just a business, it is the way modern western cultures tell their stories... and with the rapid technological changes in both production and distribution this is an industry that has never been so open to innovative development.

We are living in interesting times.

This blog is both an introduction to Film Utopia as a company: containing my company showreel, the mission statement and ethos... and the same time it's also a personal exploration of the philosophical challenges and creative opportunities available in the rapidly evolving film industry.

My Biography As Bullet Points

I grew up next to an Italian family who made and sold ice cream

I had my first piece of writing published when I was nine years old

I was a bad student because I was more interested in understanding how things were, rather than memorising facts

I did my degree in linguistic philosophy by accident

It was a friend who persuaded me to try working as a radio advertising copywriter

I won the London International Advertising Awards. once in 1999 and was nominated dozens of times

I wrote my first screenplay because I was jealous that a friend had his first book published.

I won a UK Regional Royal Television Society Award. for my first film

I once acted in a play set on a climbing wall, where I had to fall off a mountain every night

I wrote and performed stand-up comedy for a while, and was good at it, but didn't do it as a career because I couldn't face telling the same jokes every night.

I love film festivals and my main goal at the moment is to get a movie into the Cannes Film Festival

Books That Changed My Life

If you're the kind of person who immediately wants to check out a new friend's bookshelf, here is mine.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values (P.S.)

The core questions of western thought and philosophy explored through descriptions of motorcycle repair.

This is the book that turned me onto Western analytic philosophy and in turn took me to university.

If I was stranded on a desert island with just one book, this would be the one.

Cryptonomicon

A novel about code breaking, money as a concept and the evolution of computer technology.

I first discovered Neal Stephenson through his first novel "Zodiac" and immediately connected with his love of science.

Since then each of his books has become more and more dense in historical perspective and scientific research.

Cryptonomicon was a huge evolutionary jump in his writing from straight science fiction writer to something more profound. I would recommend it to anyone interested in modern culture.

Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Pro 6

If you want to be a professional video editor then this book is a great starting place.

It takes you from zero knowledge to competence on Final Cut Pro 6 with a series of well constructed lessons.

I never came into film making to become an editor... but as multi-skilling became more important to my business this book made the transition from non-editor to editor easy.
