Save Puppies like Alfie from Puppy Mills

"I had no idea about puppy farms - I just fell in love with Alfie and handed over the money."

Alfie (a golden cocker spaniel puppy), in his very short life, had to endure 29 visits to the Vet not forgetting the experience he had before Stacey fell in love with him. He died a month after she bought him.

Please help close down Puppy Farms in the UK and overseas.

What is a Puppy Farm or Mill?

Mass breeding operations

Puppy Mills are mass breeding operations that house puppies and their mothers in dirty, squalid conditions with poor diets, no medical care, no proper socialization and no exercise.

Puppies are often sick, malnourished, suffering from genetic problems and abused in one form or another. Other animals can be commercially bred for profit in the same way including cats.

Buying puppies from Rescue Homes

The best place to buy puppies

Like most people I'm against Puppy mills/farms for obvious reasons but I'm also wary of buying pets from pet shops or from people I do not know.

It would be very hard for me not to walk into a pet shop and not want to buy the animals on sale purely for the reason that I don't think that they can be properly cared for. The more animals they sell the harder it is to maintain good, quality care whatever the good intentions.

Of all the pet shops I know around London, most, now, do not sell animals of any kind. Others will just sell fish which for some reason are easier to get away with. They will often have their own private pets wandering about, though!

If I've bought a puppy in the past I've bought them from a rescue home. I don't see the point in bringing more young animals into this world when we can't even look after the ones we already have. My first choice would be a rescue home or sanctuary for any new pet like a cat or dog.

My reasons:

Rescue Homes are overcrowded and they need the help of donations etc. in order to care for the animals. By purchasing your puppy or kitten from them you are, in fact, supporting the charity.

All animals are given a thorough testing to make sure that they are suitable for re-homing.

They are well cared for and all vaccinations are given and up to date.

Animals in a rescue home or similar are not there just because they have behavioural problems. Most are there because they've been abandoned or been given to the rescue home due to financial problems, rules and regulations pertaining to their own housing, owners losing interest, owners not having enough time to care for them properly or ill health/death and marital breakdown. So, by buying one from a home, you are providing a well needed home and security for an older pet.

They are often partly or fully trained and have social skills with people and other animals.

Important Information about Puppy Mills

Information has been taken from the RSPCA

Follow the RSPCA's golden rules on buying a puppy in the UK:

- Always ask to see the mother
- Beware if the breeder is outside the UK
- Check vaccination cards. Beware if you can't see the vet's details
- Pedigree certificates do not guarantee the condition of the puppy
- Never buy from someone who offers to deliver a puppy
- Consider a rescue dog from your local RSPCA centre

Puppy Farm Facts!

- In southern Ireland, 1,000 bitches can be bred to exhaustion on one farm
- 1,000 puppies are imported from Ireland each week
- In a RSPCA survey, 17% of new puppies fall ill within days of arriving home
- Watch footage secretly filmed by RSPCA undercover officers, lifting the lid on puppy trading.

Puppy farm pups are often:

- sick or diseased
- malnourished
- sold without proper certification
- removed from their mothers too early
- born in overcrowded, filthy conditions.

Help stamp out Puppy Trafficking

Give animals a voice

SO cute, aren't they?

However, it's puppies like these in this image that are being bred in large numbers for huge profit. Like the puppies born on Puppy farms these puppies often fall sick and are kept in horrific conditions.

As with any pet, puppies are expensive to keep, often costing hundreds of pounds in care, food, vet bills shortly after they've been bought. The cost of Vet bills are considerably higher if the puppies have been purchased from pet shops, newspaper ads, the internet and puppy farms.

If you've bought a puppy in this way and it falls sick, you may be reluctant to return it from where you bought it from. The RSPCA has some advice if this happens to you. Read your consumer rights.

Should there be a lock down on puppy sellers?

Should sellers be licensed?

Often pet shops will sell puppies, too and it's not often known if these puppies come from Puppy Mills or from registered breeders.

But, should we make this practice illegal?
Should only registered breeders and Rescue Homes be the only ones 'allowed' to sell puppies or any young animal?
Would what you do if you saw what you thought was an ill-kept puppy in a pet shop? Would you complain to the appropriate authorities or would you buy the puppy from them thereby saving that puppy from more ill-treatment?

Should there be a lock down on places that you can legally buy puppies? Should sellers be licensed?

Yes, I believe that if the places that you could buy puppies etc. from were restricted, then puppy mills and similar would be forced to close.

Linda says:

We have too many overcrowded animal shelters already-mainly bull breeds. Breeding should be severely restricted and limited to registered breeders to reduce the amount of cruelty and unwanted dogs.

GoPoochYourself says:

Some people still don't fully understand how bad puppy mills are. Or they think that the pet store they go to doesn't use them (employees at these stores usually tell them the puppies aren't from mills). So I think there need to be more regulations on pet stores.

ShirlW says:

It perplexes me that with the knowledge abut this issue that puppy mills are still allowed to exist.

SquidooFanatic says:

I know that there are responsible breeders out there, but I think that there is too much euthanasia going on in pounds for their to be any new breeders and I think that breeders should be heavily regulated and restricted in the number of puppies they breed each year.

I know it's a personal choice whether to buy from a breeder or shelter, but at the end of the day, perfectly healthy animals are being killed at pounds because they do not fit the image of a purebred. It's horrible.

VickiSims says:

Yes, they should be licensed and inspected to make sure the dogs are at least being kept under clean, healthy and humane conditions.

No, puppy mills and petshops should be regulated but private owners should be allowed also to sell puppies!

grandmadeal says:

Our government has it's nose in too much of our business already. Good, responsible breeders have enough regulation without adding more. The bad breeders are going to thrive as long as people keep buying from them or their retailers. It's against the law to rob a bank, but there are still bank robbers plying their trade.

Jean says:

The problem isn't the breeder, the problem is the low life's who go buy a puppy then when the new wears off they dump it without a second thought. THAT is the problem. People are cruel and heartless.

Thank you for this post. I volunteer at a local shelter, and pretty much all the dogs there are from puppy mills or backyard breeders. It breaks my heart.

    Hi,
I wanted to let you know about a movie that is opening the Artivist Film Festival in NYC on Dec 9th-12th.. The dogs finally have a voice!

“Madonna of the Mills” is a documentary about Laura, an office manager from Staten Island, who stumbled on this secret four years ago and vowed to save as many of these breeding dogs as she possibly could. Laura has now rescued over 2,000 dogs from Amish and Mennonite farmers in Pennsylvania. In the process, she has forever changed her life and the lives of those families fortunate enough to adopt one of these remarkable “puppy mill” survivors.

    Here is the trailer:
