Need To Store Valuables?
A small closet or garage mounted safe will do the trick!
Most homes have a set of valuables whether they be jewelry, stock certificates, family heirlooms or plain old cash. These are the types of items that shouldn't be left out for the easy picking of a burglar or not-so-family-friend. An easy solution, and inexpensive at ~$200, is a closet or garage mounted safe.Benefits of a professionally mounted safe are primarily the anchoring and disguising. I've seen plenty of safes in my custom closet career and the vast majority are in plain sight and NOT anchored down. They may be heavy, but burglars will be glad to lug it out no matter what it weighs!
These small safes are meant to be anchored via the base and through the rear, into studs, so they would take an enormous amount of effort, time and noise to remove. That's not what your typical thief wants...

Lots of drawers!
26 drawers like these...

We recently installed a master closet in the Palmira subdivision that is east of I-75 off Bonita Beach Road. The client wanted to keep their bedroom free of furniture, so we installed 26 drawers plus a clothes hamper like the picture above. There is a growing trend, if you have the space, to reduce the amount of furniture and use more built-in items in the place you need them.

If you are one to hang pants over a hanger, there are some nice solutions to keep them easily accessible and organized. These hangers can be installed in custom closet systems that are typically 14" deep.Though I'd never have that many pairs of pants of the same color, side-by-side, all pressed and neat...I could see the benefit vs. using twice the hanging space by going long: Sliding Pants Rack Video Here

Closet Tailors Organizing Tips
It is best to make a plan and stick to it before heading out to purchase organizational items. It becomes too easy to leave the store with way more than you would ever need if you don't have a plan. Now that your closet is cleared and you have decided what you are going to keep, decide how best to organize it. Do you want shelving, more hanging space, a place for your shoes? Think these things through, then decide on the systems that make the most sense for you.
Now that you have taken the time to declutter and organize your closet, do your best to keep it this way. Too often people fall back into the clutter trap. You have to make an effort to maintain your new closet. Shoes have a place now, make sure they go there. If you added drawers, make sure items go directly into those drawers after laundry. When seasons change and you start to rotate clothes, be sure to place out of season clothes in storage bins. Failure to do so will only lead to additional clutter, which will set you back on the path to an out of control closet.
A clean, well organized closet will help you in more ways that you can imagine. Not only will you feel relaxed when entering your space, but you will never have to search frantically for a lost shoe or a certain top that you need.

Custom Closet Accessories
Large or Small, Closets Need OrganizingIf your closet isn't very big to begin with, then it is imperative to take advantage of as many closet accessories as you can to help you keep your clothing easily accessible and well cared for.
Accessories are made to fit the needs of both men and women.
What special accessories do men need?
Well, tie and belt holders for a start. Don't stuff them together in a drawer when you can hang them up properly and make sure they are easy to find. Such companies as Hafele and Easy Track make such devices which you can install in your closet to make life a little bit easier. You place your ties and belts on the rack in such a manner that you can easily spot the one you need.
Men can do with a shoe storage system as well.
You can go with shoe cubbies, basically a system of utilitarian shelves in which you place your shoes, one set to a cubby hole. If space is at a premium you can even get what's called an overdoor shoe rack, which is a system you install on the back of your door in which to place your shoes. Most of these types of systems can hold 15 pairs of shoes for you.
Of course shoe storage systems aren't just for men. If you're a woman you know that typically you'll shoes than men, and so its imperative that you have a neat space for them. From shoe cubbies to overdoor systems to drawers, there'll be something to fit your needs.
Then it's time to look at shelving systems. Some people will need shelves that extend the entire length of the closet, others will need staggered shelves - and there's companies out there that can make anything to fit your needs.
Clothing hampers can also be fitted inside your closet, so that you can be sure what clothes are cleans and which dirty. And if you have a lot of clothes (or bedding) that you don't use anymore but don't want to get rid of, there are systems for that as well, designed to save you a maximum amount of space.

Closet Tailors Can Build This Custom System!
great tips on closet organizing
ANY size closet can be improved and usually double the usable space. Florida has many 8-12" reach in closets as well as small walk-ins which invariably have white wire shelving. Wire shelving is not adjustable and tends to get grimy over time. A full melamine system adjusts to your changing wardrobe, can be easily upgraded and makes full use of the space.

Fall Organizing in Florida
custom closets and storage for season's change
Even if Florida, we have a change of season. We go to closed toe shoes instead of flip flops, a long sleeve shirt instead of polo, jeans instead of short...you get the idea! So we have a wardrobe change hidden somewhere in the house, garage or what is called an attic. You have to be efficient with whatever storage space you are allotted. The traditional white wire shelves are usually mounted with one thing in mind - CHEAP! Builders go for low cost closets as that means more profit for them and minimally functional for you. By simply double hanging clothes (two rows instead of one) and adding shelves for shoes and folded clothes, you can easily double the useful space in almost any closet.
Check out my site for many pictures of well utilized closets and think of what YOU could use that extra space for! www.closettailors.com/capecoral
Wire vs. Melamine vs. Wood
As a professional in the custom closet field, I often come across questions on what materials to use for various projects around the house. Being biased, I usually lean towards melamine for a few reason stated below. I'll give you a bit of the good and bad parts of each.White Wire Mesh:
Good - it's cheap and, if installed properly, fairly sturdy.
Bad - over time, it grows its own version of what can only be described as grimy mold. It is not adjustable and, if NOT installed properly, will almost certainly fall and leave some nasty holes to patch. There is virtually no adjustment once installed.
Melamine
Good - wide variety of colors, easily customized, lots of options and adjustable. Properly designed systems will also get the maximum usable space out of the room. It is easy to add on or adapt a system to lifestyle changes.
Bad - if you ding it, repair is nearly impossible other than to cover it up or replace the part.
Wood
Good - built in, nearly the same options as melamine, great colors and texture
Bad - finish fades over time, possible warping unless maintained well, repairs are difficult at best, cost is 250% of melamine
Having installed all three, I'd say that melamine is your best choice for flexibility and cost in the value equation. Most realtors will tell you that you will get 90-120% of you investment in a custom closet, so think of it as a value add to your home rather than expense!

Clothes Hamper
let's tuck it away...
Where do you put your clothes that need washing? Is there a plastic basket tucked into a corner, slid underneath your hanging items, wicker standing tall or just in a pile "over there"? With a custom closet system, your dirty clothes can be tucked neatly away and still be accessible. There are two types of clothes hamper: one is a wire basket while the other is a hanging cloth version on rails. The wire basket is typically either 22" or 28" wide x 17" tall and 13" deep. This approximates the size of your plastic floor hamper very closely. The widths are based on standard sizes so as to keep the cost in line. Hanging from the back of the door that covers it, the wire basket is lifted off simple hooks and carried to the laundry zone. Many times, we'll install two or three baskets to make the sorting process simpler. You can also add a cloth liner to the wire basket which leaves the basket in place, but pull out by handles to head to laundry zone.
The other type usually has two cloth bags hanging from slide out rails. The bags have handles which you lift out when ready to clean. Think of them like the bags supermarkets sell to reduce use of plastic bags - larger and sturdier, but the concept is the same. You can also throw the bag right into the washer to clean it!
Either system works very well and it is a matter of cost. Typically, the cloth bag is twice as expensive and takes longer to install = more labor $$. If you have any questions concerning custom closets or clothes hampers, feel free to send me a message at
Closet Tailors of SW Florida.
Drawers in the closet...
...make for a bigger bedroom!
I know it sounds silly, but if you have the room to add drawers inside your closet, that will free up space in the bedroom. You typically use the closet once or twice a day whereas the bedroom itself is passed through many times. Removing a dresser, which is typically six feet x two feet, you free up a spot for a chaise lounger or decorative shelving. With a young family, that kind of space is perfect for a crib or bassinet as well.
Drawers come in all sizes as long as the face can be attached properly. Typical sizes are 6", 8" and 10" with the corresponding drawer approximately 1" less in height. Some come without the face and have a "scoop" handle cut out of them to pull open. Scoop faces do leave the interior goods open to light and dust, so we usually see them in pantries or general storage areas.
The rails or "glides" that the drawer sits on make a big difference as well. A simple white epoxy metal rail with roller bearing is usually fine and keeps the cost down. As an upgrade, full ball bearing glides that extend the drawer out completely add $8-15 to the cost. The installation on ball bearing glides is most of the price increase.

Mixing Closet Material Colors
I had a client that found a website of a high end closet company in California. They had an unusual mix of colors with stark contrasts of light and dark materials. Considering her sense of style in the rest of the Bonita Beach Road condo, this set in very well. What do you think? Leave messages in the comment section! Style Matters... :)
With any closet or storage system, the main idea is to have a truly functional space that accommodates your needs. That usually means taking into account the current types of clothes, shoes, long hanging items and storage needs. Any professional will work and inventory that so the new design will exceed your needs. Now comes style - do you have a closet that will be "seen"? Is it truly part of the home or just a closed off space to be used only when necessary? With the former, the color matching and accessories (clothes hamper, bench for seating, glass in doors, designer hardware, etc) all can complement the ambiance of the rest of the home. You may need specific colors or glazes to match nearby cabinetry as well as color selections for the hardware.
Closet Tailors of SW Florida is able to accommodate virtually all of these requests and can work closely with your interior designer to match the style you wish to purvey. Please call us at 239-209-4616 and we'll work together to make your closets, pantry, home office and all storage areas part of the overall design!
Get Your Garage ON!!!
Office in Home or Business
While most of the time I am looking to organize and store clothes, food or garage gear, there is a whole office/commercial segmenet that still needs help. Many offices were never designed to be functional - just boxes on a blueprint that sort of allow for people and their equipment to do their jobs.Closet Tailors of SW Florida can analyze the furniture, equipment and people to maximize the efficient use of your space. Then a design incorporating filing, cuts for electric & cabling, storage of supplies and the ergonomic aspects of humans is generated. 3-D renderings make it "real" and 22 choices in material colors should match nearly any decor.

Mixed storage in garage

We had a one car garage in Verandah east of Ft. Myers that needed as much storage space as possible. With tie beams and semi-vaulted ceiling, we added shelving everywhere up high, cabinets, hung two bikes, put some wire shelves up for golf shoes and added 2 x 4's for wall storage. All in all, the client was greatly pleased with the work and time frame (< 2 weeks).
Custom closet with bench seat

Though it may seem trivial, we were asked to place a bench seat inside the closet so the client could sit down briefly and put their shoes on. Though the space above was not used (per their request), this amenity does add a touch of class while putting a couple of shoe shelves underneath the seat.
All in all, the rest of the closet was used very well, client was happy (called back to do garage!) and it adds another service for future customers. SW Florida Weekly article
I recently had a reporter call me about closet storage systems. I have worked on articles with her before and she was gracious enough to contact me for input. Here is a nice article (even though a competitor is in there too!) on some basic closet system designs and uses. Here's a quick link to: Closet Tailors in Charlotte Florida Weekly
Garage Storage Made Easy!
Garage storage is a matter of available wall space and ceiling height. The more open wall space and height will provide flexibility in design, allow for overhead options and dramatically increase the linear footage. Depth from the wall is also a key factor as usable space can increase by 20-40% with an increase of 6" in depth. As a consumer, you will have to consider whether it is important to keep everything clean, i.e. behind doors, or does open storage work. Doors will GREATLY increase the price as they need hardware (hinges, plates, handles), use up as much (or more) material as a couple of vertical panels and take extra man hours to install. Without a doubt, doors provide a cleaner look and will keep your garage gear cleaner.
Open storage is actually more useful as is does allow overhang for deeper items. Who doesn't have a cooler, lawn chair or odd size scrap wood that is not exactly 18" or 24" deep? You should take into account what you will be placing on the shelves as well. Spread your weighty stuff - paint cans, cases of water, motor oil, spare parts and tool bins - out across several shelves. No self respecting garage company will extend shelves farther than 30" wide. Despite best intentions, they WILL be overloaded and eventually fail if too wide. A 24"-30" shelf, no less than " thick, will hold most all of the typical garage items without trouble.
Most garages, depending upon the part of the country you are in, are a minimum of 9' high. Newer homes are easily going to 12' and, depending upon the building codes for sloped roofs, could even be higher. Since the vast majority of vehicles are less than 7' high, that allows 2-3' of usable space over the hood of the vehicle for a downward hanging rack.
These overhead racks can add a tremendous amount of storage space to an otherwise cramped garage. In a typical two car garage, it will be approximately 22-28' wide and allow for 2-3 large racks. The larger of the overhead racks is the same size as a sheet of plywood - 4' x 8' - or 32 square feet. Considering that the space will likely be at least 2 feet deep, you now have waist high storage for everything from holiday decorations to tax records. If you can add three of similar size, that is like creating a brand new 10' x 10' room just for storage! Make sure you check the load rating of the rack as they vary greatly. I happen to use Onrax's product which holds up to 800 lbs if installed properly.
Your garage has a wealth of storage space and the right combination can free up tons of interior space for daily items. See your local storage professional for ideas and professional installation.
Small Spaces = Big Rewards
small storage spaces yield big results

Though most people think they need a large closet to justify customizing it, many small spaces can be upgraded and provide HUGE increases in usable storage space. A typical closet runs about 90-108" high and, for the vast majority, there is empty space running from about 72" on up. Mostly that is because the single white wire shelf is right about eye level and you throw a few items up there that you cannot reach or never use. Let's change that view...
Custom closets usually have a double row of hanging that tops out at the 84" level. Ergonomics dictate that the top hanging rod should be around the 80" and the lower rod around the 40" mark above ground. Now that you have doubled up the hanging, what to do with the "leftover" space? That's where shelving brings down the usable items to eye level and, guess what, you STILL have the top 8-24" above that for the rarely used items.
Would you like to see all of the shoes, sweaters, t-shirts, purses and folded goods where you can select them without hassle? Of course, so don't sit back and say that the "tiny closet", piled high with stuff, can't stand going in there kind of place is without hope! Call your local custom closet company and usually they can get you on the right track.
PS: pulling everything out gives you an opportunity make some fine donations to your local Goodwill, Salvation Army or other thrift store!
Let's Talk Pantry...

Now about my pantry...
Today's pantry has almost been an afterthought in a home's design. In days long gone, the pantry had to store jarred preserves, dried meats, potatoes, spices, sugar, flour and similar basic food items. With the advent of refrigeration and grocery stores, the pantry began to shrink in size and importance.
Nowadays, with sometimes nothing more than a coat closet 24" in width and depth, the main need is to provide flexibility in shelving height. Spice jars don't need to be stacked next to a cereal box twice its height and waste space. Though there are some excellent products to adjust heights of items, such as "stadium seating" spice and can racks, having flexible shelving is the first step.
In the vast majority of new homes, the builder puts in fixed wire shelves throughout. Not only does the wire shelving allow small items (now where did that soup mix go?) to fall through, but they cannot be adjusted to your needs. Typical storage panels are on the 32mm (1.25") European standard and thus shelves can be adjusted at that increment up or down.
Larger walk in pantries, whether they be in new homes or renovations of existing larders, offer many options. One of the most useful is a series of sliding baskets with varying depths. The most common uses include storing pasta, potato chips, cookies and quick grab snack items like Fruit Rollups or granola bars. Baskets can also be used for real potato, fruit and vegetable storage such as onions (use a dark liner to block ambient light).
Another more common use for pantries is wine storage. These are not the vintage Rothschild-type, but more of commonly consumed wines as is custom in France or Italy. Sliding wine racks can store typically four bottles across in a 24" opening and are easily stacked to maximize the space. Though not as efficient, traditional lattice work can also be framed to provide the tilted and display look. Zig-zagged lucite frames also allow convenient stacking. Remember: keeping your "house wine" in the same place as food storage will keep it top of mind as you set up your shopping list!
The last upgrade I see most often is a recycling center. Depending upon the quantity, this can be as simple as an extra basket to a full blown, three can sliding system from Rev-A-Shelf or Hafele. Usually recycling bins require a portion of the pantry system to be deeper (at least 18") to allow for can and rail depth. If you don't mind the top being open and contents partly visible, the pantry can be of same size with smaller rails. A sliding shelf is also an option with framed in bins to keep them from toppling off.
Call your local custom closet and storage company, such as Closet Tailors, for pantry designs whether it be a closet size nook or walk-in. With design software and industry innovations, they have fresh ideas for all your storage needs!
Murphy Beds are hot again!

Murphy Beds were originally devised and patented in 1916 by William Murphy as a space saver for small rooms. As homes, hotels and even military locations were working on European standards, rooms were made smaller which allowed for higher densities. In actuality, it made for cramped spaces and thus the beginning of the "multi-purpose" room.
The Murphy bed as we know it usually is part of a larger wall system that incorporates shelving, drawers, full cabinets and sometimes televisions or entertainment centers. Needing a minimum of 16" depth to allow for a standard 10.5" high mattress, a custom closet or Murphy bed professional can devise substantial storage options if additional wall space is available.
The beds are sized based upon the single, double, queen and king size mattresses that can be bought at any bedding store. Mattress height is key and you should consult with your Murphy bed provider for their exact specifications. There are several options that could affect the allowable mattress height, such as spring tension and side panel materials, so do not stray from the specs.
The beauty of the Murphy bed is that it frees up so much space once closed. I have several clients that use the room as a workout space, home office and library when the bed is not in use.
Home Office Essentials
With many of us either bringing work home or working out of our house, a truly functional home office has become a necessity. There is a lot of science, including space planning and ergonomics, that is used to make a space workable outside of placing a Wal-Mart workstation in the corner. Follow most, if not all, of these tips and you'll be using your space effectively plus reduce stress and fatigue.
Your home should start with about four linear feet and there is a reason: basic office chairs need 24 inches and the smallest file cabinets are 12 inches wide. Flank an opening for your knees with two 12 inch cabinets and Bam! - you are at four feet. Anything under four feet becomes cramped, lacks file and/or drawer space and likely will be overtaken by today's paperwork!
The desk depth could come into play as well. A traditional office desk is a minimum of 24 inches deep. Depending on the depth of the adjacent walls, you may not want a deep desktop to avoid room blockage. Eighteen inches is as small as I would allow for a useful space.
The actual desktop surface is also key. Will you be using it for general writing, bill paying, etc? Then a melamine or laminate top will work fine. If you are using for crafts, say scrapbooking, the hammering and cutting would likely damage a softer surface. Though pricey, invest once in a solid surface such as Corian or granite so you don't have to replace it. The color palettes of Corian and granite also allow for a nice contrast to, or tie-in, the room's dƩcor. Remember: 30-32" is the standard height from the ground for good ergonomics.
If the wall above the desk space is available, either open shelving or cabinets can be hung to maximize storage. Most custom home office providers will match the style and width to the base cabinets. I often put crown molding on top of the upper cabinets to provide a finished, and much more built-in, look.
Nearly every home office has a computer. Laptops take up their room while desktops vary greatly in size and shape. Even the printers, fax, scanner, copier and assorted modems will use valuable space. Call a local custom closet, such as Closet Tailors, or office organization company as they can recommend proper spacing and options to manage your peripherals.
Most homes do have the space to place a small home office that can act as the communication center, mail room and computer work station. Follow some of the tips above and you can make yours a reality!

The choice of closet materials usually falls along the lines of cost versus utility & look. The vast majority of new homes have either white wire or ventilated wood. White wire is the cheapest, by far, and ventilated wood usually is the "upgrade" option (hint, hint%u2026the installation and utility are the same as wire). Here's a detailed breakdown of the differences and other options below.
White Wire
Builder love this ClosetMaid product because it is cheap and easy to install. Most clients don't care about the utility of the closet and it always looks bigger when empty! Thus wire is set at 66" off ground so most clothes fit, but is an extremely inefficient storage system. Over time, it also tend to have a mold grow over the entire surface which is nearly impossible to remove.
Ventilated Wood
This product is usually made of real wood and has a better look than white wire. Plus it has the advantage of some air flow around clothes and less grid pattern on folded items. That being said, it has the same lack of functionality. You may see two rows of hanging and some shelving, but rarely have I seen any drawers, clothes bin or other amenities. The cost is nearly the same, and sometime exceeds, melamine systems.
Melamine
Melamine is the industry term for a high density pressed board. Once the materials formed form mostly recycled wood by high pressure presses, it is effectively shrink-wrapped in any one of dozens of colors or wood grain patterns. After that, it is milled into various standard sizes and shapes that are joined to assemble a custom closet. Its advantages are many colors, versatility and efficient use of the space assuming you have a good design to start with. Melamine systems also have lots of options as they are based upon industry standard 32 mm hole pattern.
Real Wood
There are several suppliers (Mission Woodworking) that can cut and finish custom storage system parts in real wood with a good stain and finish. The design is key as it would be difficult to acquire parts for any last minute changes. These systems have only one drawback - cost. The cost is approximately 225% of a melamine or ventilated wood system. They do have a longer lead time as well.
So you do have to balance the functionality vs. look vs. cost when deciding on how best to upgrade or replace a system. A solid local custom storage firm, such as Closet Tailors of SW Florida, usually offers free design and can advise you on what fits your budget.
Cabinet Door TV
"Integrated WiFi technology provides fast connectivity to home wireless router and increases your entertainment choices from general TV programs to internet resources. Dedicated solid state drive not only boosts the computer's performance, but also defines this product as a multimedia hub and personal music library all in one." said the Luxurite spokesman.

5 Tips To Declutter
5 Tips For Getting Rid of Clutter With No Effortby Marilyn Bohn
Get It Together Organizing
The ocean is both powerful and hypnotic. When we visited Maine we watched as the beautiful white waves come crashing onto the rocks. In Delaware we watched as the waves come rushing onto the sandy beach where they calmly flattened out and slunk back out to gather speed again.
On one particular beach there was a sign saying "Stay Out-Strong Undertow". A friend told me that a few weeks before our visit someone had been sucked under the water because of the pull of the undertow. The person first tested the water by sticking his toes in the water as it was lazily receding from the sand. Then he walked out a little bit until the water covered his ankles. Perhaps he forgot about the warning as he went out further into the ocean until it was up to his knees. At that point he was hit hard by a wave and caught off balance. The next wave hit him higher and he fell onto the sand and was pulled out to sea. By this time he was under the power of the undertow and was tossing about in the water until he went under and was never seen again until it was too late to save his life.
This man unfortunately tested the limits of the ocean by seeing how far he could go into the water without obeying the sign. The same thing can happen to us in our homes when getting rid of clutter.
At the beach there was a warning sign. We could put up a warning sign in our homes to say: "Getting Rid of Clutter in Progress". But do we then test the limits by not putting things away after using them saying "Oh it won't hurt if I just put this one thing here for now, I will take care of it later". One little thing won't hurt this time; it is the several times that things are left out rather than put away that creates clutter.
Getting rid of clutter means having a designated place for everything and then after using it putting it away. This sounds like a simple thing to do but we all get in a hurry and leave things out sometimes. If we can get in this habit we might as well get in the habit of putting things away where they belong every time without fail.
It will save us time and it will eliminate the frustration of losing things because they become misplaced. The next time you are tempted to just set something down and saying you'll put it away later think how lovely it will be that you aren't starting a pile of clutter. The few seconds it took to put it away while it was in your hand will save minutes later and the bonus is you don't have to think about it anymore.
Getting rid of clutter is easy by revisiting places that are organized such as cupboards, closets or drawers. Every few months take a couple of minutes to look at the things you have and assess if they are in the most convenient places and if you still want to keep them. It is surprising how things just get undone even though they have been organized.
A friend and I were chatting and she was so excited because her children had gone camping with their grandpa so she had the house all to herself during the day. She took the opportunity to go through their toys while they were out of the house. She said it was much easier to do this when they were gone. She got rid of toys they never play with anymore and the things she donated they would not miss. What a smart way to get rid of clutter.
Even though we can't see the undertow of the ocean it is very powerful and can be deadly. Getting rid of clutter can also be powerful as we do it a little at a time and don't get into sloppy habits.

Fetching RSS feed... please stand byHome Entertainment and study zones
With the way space planning has evolved, especially in newer home areas such as Florida, Arizona and California, there has been a tendency to provide "built-ins". Built-ins are essentially a specific function piece of furniture that is not meant to be moved around. These may be preferred due to the angled walls, nooks or even the window and door arrangement which almost necessitate where furniture will be placed. Two of the most common built-ins are entertainment centers and home office areas. New homes are having specific areas designated with media centers and computer spaces in mind. Here are a few design notes for both types:
ENTERTAINMENT CENTER
Typical entertainment centers are a minimum of eight feet wide which allows for a set of bookshelves flanking a space for flat screen TV. The majority of TV's are at least 36" wide, so allowing 42" in the middle would mean two 18" wide bookshelves on either side. Of course, the TV opening can be wider as well as the shelves, plus doors and drawers can be integrated for a finished look.
With the add-on devices such as PC's, game consoles, blue-ray players and surround sound, you may need extra shelving and cabling to accommodate them. Most custom built-ins can be adapted to accommodate the wall plugs, cable outlets and HDMI/CATV/USB cabling.
Since most TV's are connected to directly to the wall, the entertainment center must also allow for the mounting hardware. The brackets are fairly adjustable and nowhere near the size of the TV, but the angles and side space definition could cause some issues. Along with that, cabling from the TV to other devices should be accounted for in side panel holes with grommets covering raw wood.
HOME OFFICE OR KID'S STUDY ZONE
A place to organize today's busy household also includes a place for internet connections, paying bills, current records and surfing for the latest bargain. A computer nook, somewhere between five feet and as large as a whole wall, can be designed to hold all of the house's needs. The need for built in file drawers, keyboard trays, upper and lower cabinets plus all of the computer peripherals (printers, fax, scanner, external hard drive, etc.) should be measured an accounted for.
You need a minimum of 24" for a chair to slide in comfortably, 30" is the typical desk height and upper cabinets start at the 54" mark (sometime higher depending on ceiling and personal preference).
Children's study zones, whether in their room or a shared space, should be designed with their needs in mind. This is a creative space, so allow for corkboard, lots of printing, adjustable chair and possibly their own computer. Remember that music is a big player for them, so make sure speakers and headphones are in place to enjoy and share!

Walk In Closets Add Huge Value
Walk in closets are one of the most valued rooms when a home is bought or sold. Outside of the bathroom and kitchen, walk in closets provide a space for the home owner to be themselves and what defines them - on the outside, at least! As a closet organizing and designing professional, I have to quasi-define what I would consider to be a walk in closet:
-at least four walls with minimum lengths of 66" - yes, there is a reason for this!
-open frame, sliding panels or mirrors, bi fold or other doorway
-height would likely be at least 7' or it becomes too claustrophobic
The 66 inch minimum above is defined by the approximate 24 inches off the wall needed for clothes to hang properly. If you have two walls facing each other, and clothes hanging from each, 66 inches minus 48 inches leaves an 18 inch corridor to walk between. For most people, that will be just enough so you aren't dragging against all of the clothes as you decide what to wear.
Personally, I prefer a door that is centered on one wall. That allows full use of three walls and, depending upon width, a pro might be able to add more just inside the right and left of the frame. There would also be no dead corners that are so prevalent in white wire installations.
Of course, the larger the closet the more flexible the design would be. I once had a walk in closet that was 19 feet along the back wall which was larger than the master bedroom! Of course, that particular master bedroom didn't have any furniture other than the bed itself and a couple of nightstands. With the eighteen drawers, three clothes hampers, two tall stores behind doors, 26' of double hang and glass doors above hutches, they did not need any bedroom furniture.
Walk in closets are a HUGE selling point and, if you are remodeling, are an inexpensive way to add value while de-cluttering the bedroom. Let you local custom closet professional, such as Tailored Living, provide you with ideas for your walk in closet or any other storage area in your home.
Cut to fit vs. modular

As a professional, I was taught how to build closets and storage systems a certain way. You measure and design to use every available inch given industry standards and client tolerances. The reason I bring this up is a potential client asked me if I "cut to fit" or used "modular systems".
Some firms will buy a pre-determined size of modular system that will get close to the needed dimensions. Then they use mullions or filler strips to hide the gaps between the wall and the system. Needless to say, I feel that cheats the client out of valuable space. I'll even go out of the way to use corners and not-so-square shapes to make usable space out of odd angles (see picture).
If you have a square room, odd angles do not come in to play much. But many newer homes have angled walls and the designer toss in a closet behind them not caring how useful it might be. Get more tips at: More Tips From Closet Tailors
