How to Make Your Sweaters Last
Sweater Preservation
The proper way to store a sweater is to fold it. Hanging will stretch the shape. (I know - total no brainer, right?)The great debate on dry cleaning rages on. This is what I go by: If the tag says "dry clean only" then for pete's sake, dry clean only. But if it says only "dry clean" you can probably hand wash or use the gentle cycle.
When washing "dry clean" sweaters, turn inside out & use cold water and a pH-neutral detergent. I've heard that Johnson's Baby Shampoo works.
After the wash, roll the sweater in a towel, let sit for a few minutes. Then unroll & lay flat on a drying surface & reshape. I've heard that when they are dry you should fluff up with a cashmere brush (in the case of cashmere), even though I've never done this myself.
Store Sweaters Properly
1. Wash the sweater - see above. This is very important as moths & other pests are attracted to food particles, sweat and human or pet hair on the sweater.2. Pack sweaters away in airtight bins with cedar or lavender. Cedar will have to be refreshed as it loses effectiveness after a year.
