Clove cigarettes are far from being a fad in Southeast Asia where they are known as "kreteks." They are a cultural icon and export from Indonesia where they have been manufactured and consumed for over 100 years. They have been exported to and consumed in the United States for over 30 years.
Clove cigarettes are not the cigarette pick in the majority of smokers in America. It tends to be the occassional cigarette to many. Even still it does not excuse the amount of underage smokers of the cigarette.

Kretek () are cigarettes made with a blend of tobacco, cloves and other flavors. The word "kretek" itself is an onomatopoetic term for the crackling sound of burning cloves.
Haji Jamahri, a resident of Kudus, Java, created kreteks in the early 1880s as a means to deliver the eugenol of cloves to the lungs, as it was thought to help asthma. Jamahri believed the eugenol cured his chest pains and he started to market his invention to the village, but he died before he could mass market it. M. Nitisemito took his place and began to commercialize the new cigarettes. Clove cigarettes are manufactured in various brands, Black Label being the most common. The cigarette is made of a blend of tobacco, cloves, and a "seasoning."Although, the cigarette is not solely nicotine, it can still provide a similar affect.

Health Effects of Clove Cigarettes
Clove cigarettes can create a similar effect of the carbon monoxide and venous plasma nicotine as conventional cigarettes such as Malboro.
But, at the same time that the cigarette creates a similar feel of a "normal" cigarette, kretek cigarettes do not appear to show any worse health effects than other cigarettes.
