Clove cigarettes are far from being a fad in Southeast Asia where they are known as "kreteks." They are a cultural icon and export from Indonesia where they have been manufactured and consumed for over 100 years. They have been exported to and consumed in the United States for over 30 years.
Clove cigarettes are not the cigarette pick in the majority of smokers in America. It tends to be the occassional cigarette to many. Even still it does not excuse the amount of underage smokers of the cigarette.

Haji Jamahri, a resident of Kudus, Java, created kreteks in the early 1880s as a means to deliver the medicinal eugenol of cloves to the lungs, as it was thought to help asthma. It cured his chest pains and he started to market his invention to the village, but he died before he could mass market it. M. Nitisemito took his place and began to commercialize the new cigarettes. Health Effects of Clove Cigarettes
Clove cigarettes can create a similar effect of the carbon monoxide and venous plasma nicotine as conventional cigarettes such as Malboro.
