The January 18 release date has arrived at last. There was a lot of expectation for the Cloverfield movie that was whipped up by the extensive viral marketing and J.J. Cloverfield Movie Review

A brief Cloverfield review to get uoi in the mood without giving away the whole plot.

Abrams is an undoubted master of suspense and this movie is a thriller to the core. Expect heart racing moments of terror and excitement in good measure. Prepare yourself for a tunnel of jumping rats along with the spine chilling monsters that aim to sicken.

The character performances are solid but this is a film for monster spotting not acting. The main monster is huge spanning several city blocks. It is an ugly brute with elephant skin, sea creature body features and a face that is best forgotten.

The large monster can shed smaller monsters to make it all the more complex. These terror crustaceans have a nasty bite and a temperament to match.

The ending is one to remember and will not disappoint. The Cloverfield script is as polished as one would expect from a big budget Hollywood blockbuster. Abrams does forget to fill in one plot detail however; what was the monster doing their anyway?

Cloverfield Cinematography

Cloverfield relies on the first person perspective to tell it's story. One of the main characters, Hud, uses a handy cam throughout the film which frames the viewer's perspective. This technique provides many intense moments as we feel Hud's terror from behind the lens. Like the "Blair Witch Project" this perspective does wear a little thin after a period of time.

Cloverfield Official Movie Poster

When the official Cloverfield movie poster was released by Paramount it confirmed for many the monster movie plot idea. The Statue of Liberty is torn apart in a seemingly vicious attack. Making use of these strong symbols taps into the currently popular theme of fear while referencing the original New York Monster flicks - King Kong & Godzilla.

Paramount have continued this theme by installing a large scale model of the decapitated Statue of Liberty outside their studio.

Cloverfield Bread Crumbs

Secrecy has been paramount from the conception of the Cloverfiled film. Even during casting there were measures taken by J. J. Abrams to shroud the plot in mystery. Actors read from old "lost" scripts instead of from the actual Cloverfield script. This removed any threat of plot elments leaking before due course.

At first a trickle of information became available about the Cloverfield movie. These Cloverfield clues began the start of a sophisticated marketing plan. The release date of 1-18-08 was hinted at in an untitled trailer that was screened with the Transformers movie in 2007. This was later confirmed as the US release date.

Cloverfield has used marketing techniques that have proven successful for films such as The Blair Witch Project. The websites below are viral marketing clues about the movie produced for this purpose.
