J.J. Abrams "Cloverfield" - The Movie Behind the Viral Marketing

If you saw the trailer with Transformers or have caught the trailer online, you probably know about a film that's so far been titled, "Cloverfield." While no one's really sure what the movie's all about, so far it seems that the film surrounds New York City under attack by a giant monster. Though what that "monster" is or what the story behind the few minutes of "camcorder" footage we see in the trailer is, we still have yet to know.

ETA: Obviously, we know what it's about now, but as I said, I will be keeping portions of this lens in tact for posterity.

Fandango Online Exclusive

Fandango has an online exclusive. When you begin watching it, it will look as if it is only the new theatrical trailer. However, keep watching until the theatrical trailer ends. After that, a new clip will begin. There is a bit of new footage and, it appears a VERY fleeting glimpse of the monster.

Clip is here.

The First Reviews Are Coming In

Harry Knowles of Ain't It Cool News and Jeff Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere have officially seen the movie and have published their reviews. It looks pretty good, folks. Here's a couple of quotes from the pair:

"This is a towering movie. A complete reinvention of the disaster movie, the giant monster movie and even the love story."

You can read the rest of Knowles review here.

Neither really do what we're expecting them to: to describe the monster. But Jeff Wells does give this assessment:

"He's a nightmare that "means" nothing but says everything. He's a vision out of a Grimm Brothers fable, but one written by a deranged Matt Damon or Heath Ledger while locked in a 19th Century mental ward. He's a fiend that a heroin addict might see in his sleep during his first night in rehab."

You can read the rest of Wells review here.

Cloverfield: What's It About?

If you've been paying any attention to the net, you've no doubt heard of Cloverfield. More than likely, you've also heard many crazy theories about what the film is actually about.

Theories surrounding everything from giant lions, to Cthulhu, to even Voltron (people are desperate) have made the rounds. Chances are, none of them are right.

Cloverfield is produced by J.J. Abrams of Lost and Alias fame. If you've kept up with Lost these past three years, you realize how many dead ends Abrams can lead you on before finally revealing the truth. In the coming weeks, I'll be adding more about the theories that are coming through the net. Because, while they all may be wrong, it's still fun to speculate.

The Poster

It looks like this is the first teaser poster for the film with the codename of Cloverfield.

There's been some debate as to whether the statue's head has just been accidentally dismantled or ripped off, but in my opinion, there does seem to be some deliberate damage implied there.

New Production Stills From Cloverfield

IESB has new production stills: Cloverfield Production Stills.

Wondering why the trailer looked just a bit different? It's because the trailer was shot BEFORE the film. Read more about JJ Abrams rush to get a trailer for Paramount in order for it to be attached to Transformers in this EW article.

Cloverfield Suite?

Wondering about that Cloverfield Suite during the credits? That was composed by Michael Giacchino who also composed the score for Lost. While there doesn't seem to be a soundtrack for Cloverfield yet, you can hear some of his other music on the Lost score CDs. They are absolutely fantastic as well. He's also composed a number of other scores as well.

Want More Information on the Monster?

The great thing about Cloverfield is that, even after the movie is done, there's more to learn. Take a look at this clip, in Italian, that shows a certain oil rig being destroyed by "some thing."

Tagruato Company to blame? Or the terrorist group? Tidowave?

So, you've heard that Rob can be heard saying something after the credits. What is it? This pages lets you hear for yourself.

Apparently, some have reversed the recording and it says something differently. Judge for yourself.

A Note on This Lens

I'm going to keep all of this lens intact for posterity. Every crazy rumor. Every funny tidbit that will be laughable once the film debuts. So, if you see dated information lower on the page, this is why!

Another Rumor Update

Raptors. Why did it have to be raptors?

According to AICN and New York Magazine, there's a nice, juicy rumor that the film could involve raptors. Warning: If you want to remain completely unspoiled, do not click that link.

Yes. Raptors. You know. Like in Jurassic Park?

Rar. Personally, I think it's just another diversion. However, without giving you too much of a spoiler, there's a bit of dialogue in the above article that does seem to suggest that there might be more than just a big monster on the prowl.

Key Quotes from the Trailer

These quotes from the trailer have the internet all abuzz. To drive you just a little more crazy, here's a list of some of the most "interesting" lines.
  • "Rob, have fun in Japan." (This has been a big deal with some netters since "all the big monsters come from Japan." But where does this leave Tony Soprano? Oh right. Monsters, not mobsters.)
  • "What was that noise?" (Heard after the earth shakes and the lights go out followed by a loud "monsterish" noise.)
  • "Phone calls are pouring into the newsroom that say a thunderous, roaring sound...." (This was the best I could do with this one. It sounds like there's a cut here.)
  • "Can we see something from the roof?"
  • "What animal sounds like that?" (Said as the party-goers flock to the roof.)
  • "It was shaking everywhere, man. It was like tremors." (Said by a party-goer on the roof.)
  • "Looks like you should have left town a little bit earlier." (Said by the cameraman to Rob.)
  • "What is it? Is it coming this way?" (After the roar and explosion as people head downstairs to the street.)
  • "I saw it! It's alive! It's huge!" or "I saw it! It's a lion! It's huge!" or "I saw it! It's a light! It's huge!" (This has been, by far, the most debated line in the trailer. It could be any of those words. It sounds like all of them. I say it's "alive," but after dealing with a smoke monster for two seasons, I don't think anyone's ready to rule out anything.)

J.J. Abrams: Master of Driving Us Crazy

Once upon a time, there was a show in which we constantly heard the roar of a monster. "What could it be?" People asked. Was it a dinosaur? A giant polar bear? Oversized Elvis? Then one day, we saw it. It was a monster made of smoke. That's right. It was a monster.......made of smoke. Could J.J. be the guy behind those anti-tobacco ads?

Lost - The Complete First Season

Nothing can quite top the first season of Lost. This was the season where you really felt like you "knew" the characters. There was still so much mystery and intrigue. *sigh*

Amazon Price: $47.99 (as of 07/25/2008)

Lost - The Complete Second Season

Season two was a departure from the fantastic season one. This was the season that birthed the "I hate Ana Lucia" brigade. You have to admit - that was one annoying character.

Amazon Price: $47.99 (as of 07/25/2008)

Lost - The Complete Third Season

Season three pretty much made up for season two. Especially with the focus on Desmond, who is probably one of the best characters on the show - save for Locke. This season also had the season finale that had EVERYBODY talking. Not quite season one, but still a fantastic season none the less.

Amazon Price: $27.99 (as of 07/25/2008)

The Lost Chronicles : The Official Companion Book

Lots of photos. Lots of good character information, but more suited towards the first season than the last two.

Amazon Price: $7.99 (as of 07/25/2008)

Lost (Original Television Soundtrack)

I've always been impressed by the score for Lost. At times, it's very moving. Some of the music "gets to you" even without the accompanying footage.

Amazon Price: $17.98 (as of 07/25/2008)

Got a good theory? Lay it on me!

I want to hear what you think Cloverfield's about!
