Forbes magazine says Saban is the most powerful coach in sports
There's no excuse when you have control over every aspect of the program. The only thing you can't do is get on the field in every position and make every play. The players have to do that.
As long as Saban can keep everything in balance, keep the same message going, and keep everybody moving in the same direction, he'll likely have success.
I am writing this on 9/4/08, a few days after Alabama put a hurt on Clemson. It's hard not to look at the overall performance in that game and not think Alabama is back. We'll revisit that one later.
In the meantime, if you have not read it yet, click here to read the article and get the goods on Saban's deal with the University of Alabama. One thing I did not know was that he can walk away at any time, with no financial penalty. Man, what a deal.

April 2008 A-Day Game
Alabama's Spring Football Game
We made the trip down to Tuscaloosa again to see the Crimson and White go at it. At 5:45 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2008, my dad and my two nephews arrive at my house to pick up my son and me. All of us are decked out in our 'Bama garb, and we hit the road a bit after 6.
The boys are in the back seat, loaded up with a billion songs on their iPods, I take over the drivers seat, and the journey begins.
We stopped at Hardee's in Franklin, TN, for a little early morning breakfast and the rest of the trip is smooth sailing. At one of the Huntsville exits, we see a good price on gas and decide to fill up. There were 5 cars just at that service station, full of Crimson Tide fans, headed down to Tuscaloosa. We saw a LOT more of them in the cars that we passed (mostly, that passed us).
Once on the University of Alabama campus, we notice a lot more vendors and booths than last year. The best thing we found, though, was the burgers, dogs, etc., at Rama Jama's, just across from the stadium. While there were plenty of choices, they had GREAT prices and really nice folks working the lines outside. We were glad we waited to eat.
The crowd was again pretty large, but not as crazy big as last year's 92,000+ (the official numbers, but there were way more than 92k there). The game was fun to watch, and there were some crazy folks walking around.
We had a good time, and I took a lot of pictures. There are over 80 of them right now in my A-Day set on Flickr, with more to come. Check them out and let me hear from you if you were there. Who knows, you might be in one of my pictures!

April 2007 A-Day Game
Coach Saban at the A-Day Game
I was there last year, with about 100 thousand other crazy Alabama football fans. My son, my dad, my nephew and I drove down from Nashville to Tuscaloosa early that morning. We were planning to meet my dad's two brothers and some of their family members. However, with the huge crowd, and the cell phones being maxed out (evidently), we could not get hooked up with them. They ended up on the opposite side of the stadium from us.While driving down the interstate, the traffic became an indicator of what we were to eventually find. It was like a bowl game, and ALL the fans there were rooting for just one of the teams. Man, I am telling you it was like nothing I had ever been to.

Coach Saban before the A-Day game
I brought my new digital camera (thanks to my wife) and took a ton of pictures. Coach Saban seemed to be pretty intense, even for this game.
