West Virginia Coal Mine Wars
Coal mining Appalachia has become the norm. I have watched many documentaries regarding coal in the Appalachian Mountains, water shortages, power plants, and alternative energy. This documentary, Coal Country, takes a long, brave, extremely difficult look at the coal process from beginning to end.
Watching this was a very emotional experience for me. I still feel such anger. You have no idea. I cannot believe these things continue. It makes me very mad that people do not care about the health and welfare of their own neighbors.
I wanna know how these companies, the government, and the politicians justify -in their heads- what they are doing to the people in America and to the environment of the entire world?
How could anyone do these things and sleep at night?

What if it Was Happening to You?

- What if it was in your backyard?
- What if you didn't have clean water?
- What if you had layers of coal dust caking the inside of your house?
- What if it was your child that was killed by a massive boulder blasted lose and then pushed over the side of a mountain in the name of coal?
When the water is poisoned in these areas, to think that it will not have a massive impact on the whole country... that's just ignoring the facts.
I feel pity. Pity because there are so many people in the Appalachian Mountain region that depend on coal to put a roof over their families heads. I don't know if pity is the correct word. Compassion or sympathy would be a better description, I believe.
It absolutely breaks my heart to see these people so adversely impacted, and no one seems to care.
It breaks my heart to see the devastation on our eco system.
Coal provides over half the power in the country.
This is a war. It's neighbor against neighbor. It's the Coal Wars!
Miners are Good People
I am in no way implying that miners are bad. I know they aren't. The coal companies are to blame. They have the money and power. There is no reason they could not start changing to cleaner power and keep the employees they have and retrain them.

Miners are the Backbone of the United States
The people in this area are hard working and they are not stupid. It's survival. I get it. I'm not mad at the miners. I'm mad at the megalomaniac companies and the government for not giving a damn about people!

Coal Keeps the Lights On
Joe says:
What alternative energy? Wind turbines ruin the areas beauty and harms the birds habitat. Solar panels eat up space and do not produce nearly enough electricity. If you've got to complain about the coal industry, at least come up with a viable alternative that works~!
tori says:
COALS ALSOME KEEP USING IT!!
Alan says:
Pro Coal...keeps electicity affordable and the source is abundant in the US so that we don't have to depend on foreign energy.
I Would Like Alternative Energy
aleena says:
coal is a power sourse but soon i maybe all gon so we need solar energy
gary says:
SELL IT TO THE CHINESE
Canimbill says:
I am against coal mining that tears down mountains and creates vast toxic waste dumps of coal slurry. I am against coal mining that does not provide basic environmental protection. Nothing is worth this environmental destruction.
aesta1 says:
A company was going to build a coal mine not too far from our beach. I was worried but I learned recently that the people there stopped it. What a relief.

and I think we are losing sight of the source of our fears. West Virginia is the poorest state in the country, and Southern West Virginia is the poorest part of it, and I think people are scared that they will lose their jobs

and be flippin' burgers. You look out and that's all you see; you see mining and flippin' burgers, and I argue that the coal companies, that they want it that way. That they want that to be the only option. That's the only way they could ever get support for how they treat their workers and how they treat this land. This would never happen in a place that wasn't poor. Never!

Increasingly, Big Coal is spelling big trouble for Appalachian communities whose members have worked the mines for generations. This documentary reveals why with its explanation of the effects of mountaintop-removal mining on the region. Miners, coal company officials and area residents weigh in on the high price of "cheap energy" -- especially when it involves blowing off mountain summits to expose seams. Journalist Michael Shnayerson narrates.

Take a Stand
I am begging everyone to do something. I realize the economy is bad but there are a lot of free things that you can do like post an article or write your representative.
Anything. A lot of littles do add up to a whole lot.
I do not think people realize the situation.
Do it for future generations.

Clean Coal Technology?
I Do Not Believe in Clean Coal

Living not far from a coal burning power plant, seeing massive numbers of coal trucks daily, seeing the coal dust all over the roads, and even in homes, I know there is no such thing a clean coal. It might be cleaner than what it was ten years ago, but it's not clean. It never has been nor will it ever be. It is the best oxymoron I have ever heard, clean coal. It's humorous, really.
I realize that many people make a living off coal in some way shape or form. I am not saying they are bad people. This is nothing personal. I hear and see your 'friends of coal' support. I understand that you have families to take care of just as I do. I understand that when I turn on my lights or even type this, I am in fact burning coal. That being said, just because it's what we have to use this minute does not excuse us to ignore the environmental impact. We need to look to today, tomorrow, and our future for change.

Editorial Reviews
Product Description
In the long, complex history of coal exploitation in Appalachia, mountaintop-removal (MTR) mining is the most destructive practice yet visited upon the land and its people: Ancient forested mountainsides are blown up to extract the underlying coal, and the resulting debris is dumped into nearby valleys and streams. The politics and economics of mining in the region have long allowed coal companies virtually free rein, but in recent years, opposition to MTR has gained national momentum.
This illustrated volume, like the powerful documentary film on which it is based, gives voice to the growing chorus of protest against MTR mining in Appalachia through a collection of essays, oral history, commentary, and images. It features many of the personalities from the film in their own words, as well as thoughtful essays by such eloquent voices as writers Wendell Berry and Silas House, activist Judy Bonds, journalists Michael Shnayerson and Denise Giardina, and entertainers Kathy Mattea and Ashley Judd. Illustrations include contemporary photography of this still-beautiful region - and of mining devastation and the affected landscapes, communities, and people - by noted photojournalists such as Mark Schmerling, Builder Levy, and Vivian Stockman. Sidebars feature excerpts from contemporary and historical literature, poetry, song lyrics, drawings, cartoons, and ephemera.

- I live in Nottinghamshire and Work in S.Yorkshire in the UK both were once big coal mining areas until Magaret Thatcher went head to head with the Miners Unions. Decades on villages are still struggling due top pit closures and there is still 'bad blood' between mining communities of Notts and S.Yorks because Notts miners broke away from the National Union of Mineworkers to set up the less militant Union of Demcocratic Mineworkers.

- Unlike Sir L Knotthairy I don't think coal miners would leave their job as easy as he states as in my country, we also have coal mine areas and ex-coal miners don't want to work anywhere else and others have hard to work in another sector. Because it's their life, their parents were coal miners and their grandparents, and so on... But indeed, there must be something done to protect your mountains (fortunately, we don't have mountains here, it's flat land, lol).
Blessed by a SquidAngel.
