A House Made Out of Coal

A very interesting place to go out of the way to see is a house made from coal. It is kind of unique to the coal mining area of eastern Kentucky. It only takes a few moments to view, but I am sure that you will be looking at it for much longer. I did. I also plan to go back. A perfect point of interest to stop and see if you are on a road trip and in need of a short break from the road.

The House & Museum

Located in Bell county the famous coal house was built in 1948 with 42 tons of bituminous coal. Once was featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not.

The Coal House even has a museum with it. It is a small museum amd most of it is outside. By being outside, the museum part has an advantage that most museums do not. Very easy access for a handicaped person and it is pet friendly. So, feel free to take your dog out of the car and let them sniff the artifacts too.

The picture shows one of the electric cars that were used to pull the poppers of coal out of the mine.

The house has been moved more than once. The current physical address is on North 20th St. in the town of Middlesboro, KY, a town that is part of the first Frontier, right next to the Comberland gap.

Currently, the house is also used by the local Chamber of Commerce.

Some Ponderings

type=textYou might want to ponder how much we get from coal. It is much more than you would think.
While you are pondering about the coal house, think about its qualities. Since it is very dence, it is very strong and very heavy. Not likely to have damage from the wind and rain.

The inside is just like any other house with painted plaster board walls. Currently it is used as office space. It has standard plumbing and electricity with gas heating.

When people think about the house they generally think how flamable it would be, but it is not as flamable as what you might think. Coal will start to burn at a much higher temprature than wood, and a wood framed house is very, very common.
