Another Day In Paradise - Coastal Pictures From SE Alaska

I took many coastal pictures, during my 11 seasons as the Executive Chef of the Driftwood Lodge in SE Alaska. Most of them show the breath-taking scenery when nobody else was around - just me, my ATV and my camera.

The coastal area near the mouth of the Bering glacier offers beautiful picture opportunities, sometimes including brown bears or eagles. Come along as we fly from Anchorage to Cordova, and then with a Cessna 206 single-prop 4-seater out to the Tsiu river area. I hope you enjoy our trip!

From Anchorage To Cordova, Alaska

Across coastal regions, mountains, and glaciers

Cordova Alaska

Our Cessna 206 arrives at the city airport...yes, it's a gravel strip by the side of a road.

12 miles outside of Cordova is the larger "Mudhole" Smith airport, where the jets from Anchorage can land. We pass by there - on our way to the Tsiu river. See the Childs glacier in the background.

The Amazing Bering Glacier

Largest glacier in North America!

The Bering glacier terminates in Vitus Lake, about 6 miles from the Gulf of Alaska. The "mouth" is about 36 miles wide, and filled with ice bergs of many sizes.

The Coastal Plains Of The Tsiu River

A barely touched piece of nature in the last frontier...

We land at the Driftwood Lodge, the base camp for our coastal pictures expedition. (Full disclosure: I'm the executive chef of this lodge, and the pictures for this page were taken during the 2008 silver salmon season.)

You can see the Bering glacier from the lodge - about 10 miles away. (The white strip coming out of the mountains, way back on the horizon.)

Let's Go Coastal!

It's about 15 minutes to walk - 5 minutes on a 4-wheeler (ATV)

Hello-oh! Nobody here...except for some hungry brown bears!

Talking About Brown Bears...

I "shot" these when they came around the lodge, one day...

The bears I've met...

A few clips showing brown bears as they come around our lodge in Alaska. They are attracted by the scents from Chef Keem's kitchen, but they also like the wild strawberries on the surrounding grounds.

It's Time To Fly Back - Into Civilization

For a civilized environment, I'd rather stay here!

On second thought - not everyone acts civilized around here...!

Our friend Tony had to swim in the ocean (for 5 seconds - burr!) and sunbathe on a driftwood log (ahem!)...

Chefs Keem and Karen thank you for your visit. Now let's hop on the plane, back to Cordova!
