You will LOVE this free online tree!

Not wanting to invest in Family Tree Maker software for Windows, since I am using my Mac over 98% of the time (and most of that on the Internet) I decided to check out what I could do with a free online family tree program.

Fortunately, I came across Ancestry online right away, and didn't waste much time with other sites. (I'd tried several in the past.)

I really like the interface and the ease with which you can search, communicate with others, add and edit information, share your tree judiciously (all individuals or hide living people) and many other aspects such as uploading photos and writing stories about the people in your tree.

(Yeah, I have some mistakes to correct ... I've been putting off the genealogy stuff for too long!)

LOVE it too?

More FamilyTwigs lenses

Another GREAT Ancestry feature!

This is another awesome feature of the FREE family tree maker you can use online at Ancestry!

If you're logged in to your account and click over to the Family Tree tab, you'll see this:

Click the image to see it full size...

(Isn't it great?)

What I really LOVE about this, is those little green leaves you see there by most of the names.

What that means, is that Ancestry has found likely matches for your ancestors! With just a click, you can browse records (often between 3 and 20 matches in my experience) that match your data from the MILLIONS of names in the Ancestry databases!

Elihu anecdotes

Definitions of anecdote:
* Short account of an interesting or humorous incident.
* Short account of an incident, especially a biographical one.
* Secret or hitherto undivulged particulars of history or biography.

Thanks to @kohuether, who suggested that FamilyTwigs lenses included more anecdotes.

The B. is for: Brownell? Other middle names of Bronal, Ronald, Brownwell have all been found with different sources. Not sure which might be correct.

Grave marker reads E. B. Coats, so no clues there ... other than 'Ronald' was a likely mis-hear.

The only person I've ever known who remembers Grandpa Elihu told me he was born in a cabin in the woods that is within a mile of where I now live.

I'm afraid there would be nothing left of the cabin now, but it would be fun to search for if I could get permission from the land owner.

His death certificate lists his cause of death as infection of eyes, which sounds really unpleasant.

Have you tried looking in court house records? Probate, land i.e.deeds, tax, abstract, etc.
How about searching the newspaper archives for an obit? The obit may have some errors (in my brother's they listed my 10yr sister as a "Mrs.")but it is a stepping-stone to more research.

Obituary of Elihu Coats

source: Eaton Rapids Journal, September 4, 1931

Elihu Coats, for many years a resident of Brookfield, passed away Sunday, August 30, at the home of his brother, Ed Coats, in Mulliken. He was 78 years of age and leaves to mourn his loss, 3 sons and one daughter, Frank, John and Chester, all of Narrow Lake and Mrs. Maude Nichols of Clarence. Funeral services were held at the Brookfield church on Wednesday with interment in the Clarence Center cemetary.

Visit the cemetary

You will likely be surprised at the number of cemetaries with online data, even a little rural parcel such as Clarence Center!

Many of them feature photographs of the grave markers, very helpful for those who live far away from the place of burial of their ancestors.

Rootsweb cemetary entry:
Name: Coats, Elihu Bronald
Birth/Age: 1852
Death Date: 1931 Aug 30
Gender: M
Clarence Center Cemetery
Section 15 and 22, Anderson Road and 28 Mile Road, Springport. The Cemeteries of Clarence Township were transcribed during the summer of 1996 by members of the Calhoun County Genealogical Society. The Cemetery project is chaired by Ruth Kaiser.

Want the stand-alone program?

Sure you do!

Ancestry's Family Tree Maker is the BEST out there, compatible with the most programs and databases, and has the features that genealogists want and need.

Face it, you'll want your information with you when you take your laptop on the road to libraries and cemetaries, far from Internet access! Plus, you can easily work with your program files online as well.

Check out Family Tree Maker 2008, but I urge you to purchase and use FTM Version 16 instead, at least until the next update is released.

(FTM 2008 received scathing reviews from traditional genealogists due to an interface overhaul designed to make the program work more like other software types rather than the familiar format that genealogists prefer. FTM 16, released in 2006, is still very up-to-date and more traditional user friendly.)
