I think I may have heard of Cobb buildings but am glad to learn more about them. We'll all be waiting to see you 10x10 and to hear about your experience. A unique and fun lens subject for sure!

Happy April Fool's Day! Fascinating, but I am much too old to be doing that kind of manual labor. I have other alternative methods in mind for my next house. This is a great lens though with really useful information for someone 30 years my junior. I have Squid liked your lens and am leaving you with a Fool's Day Blessing (no April Fool's prank here). This lens has also been added as a featured lens on My Squid Angel Wings blessing lens too. Look for it in the April Fool's Day section for the "Home & Garden" neighborhood.

This building technique should be used more often. I'd like to build a cobb shed.

My dream - to go out into the middle of no-where and live off the land so I would definately consider this! love makes a home!
  • badmsm Oct 13, 2010 @ 1:17 am | delete
I saw a documentary about this on PBS years ago, think it had Dennis Weaver in it. Anyway, it looked cool then and even more so now. Great lens!

Cobb houses are pretty cool. It's the people, not the dollars, that make a house a home. :)
  • Tipi Oct 4, 2010 @ 9:02 am | delete
Fascinating how homes can be built so cheaply, but still be nice.

i am going to zimbabwe to help work in an orphanage i have been supporting. To have my own accomodation i want to build my own cob house, are there any cob experts out there who would be interested in voluntarily coming to help me with my house??

I want to build an underground house! But a cobb house sounds very interesting!!
  • AndyPo Sep 13, 2010 @ 4:31 pm | delete
Great lens. I used to stay in a relative's cobb cottage in England as a child (I think the oldest part was about 500 years old) It's great to see this environmentally friendly building method becoming fashionable again.

I have been considering putting a small COBB cottage on our rural vacation property, but I still have a lot to learn. Thanks for the great lens.

I am definitely intrigued by this lens. Would this house be similar to a sod house built back in the 1800's?
  • ottoblotto Jan 26, 2010 @ 8:01 am | delete
I have been considering cobb for a small, detached art studio. Thank you for the wonderful info!!!

Interesting! This is something I can work on as a project this year. I do hope I can make a cozy cobb house. Please put up more pictures. 5*

Have you started building your cobb house? I would love to see photos! We plan on building a Compressed Earth Block house after we buy our land. We'll build a small guesthouse. Earth houses last longer.

Try adding some photos to this lens... it's much easier for those of us who are very visual to read the information when there are photos to go with the text. Otherwise, you have done a great job!

I've heard of making a house from straw bales, hadn't heard of a Cobb house. Cool!

Definitely a subject near and dear to our hearts (my husband and me, that is). When we lived on a farm in Pennsylvania, we experimented with cobb. We built an outdoor cobb oven for bread-baking, and it worked really well. I remember taking off our shoes to mix the clay, straw and water together--squish, squish. Kinda like squashing grapes to make wine, but at least we didn't end up with purple feet. (Sorry, off the subject.) Anyway, we introduced a friend to cobb via our oven, and she went on to design and build cobb homes for a living. Great stuff!

Thanks for this lens. I heard of Cobb houses but didn't know anything about them. This has me thinking -- thanks.

Good luck on building your cobhouse. Energy saving and cheap to build are great catch in today's energy crisis time. Just in case you decide you need additional storage space while you are building we have portable storages available. Check it out Storage buildings They come in different sizes and models to fit your budget and needs.
