Shoemaking Simplified
Take a look at a shoe - any shoe will do - and see if you can tell how it's made. Does it look difficult? Bet you never thought about whether or not you could make your own shoes.
The art, craft, and science of shoemaking has certainly come a long way in the past hundred or so years. Some people don't even recognize that "cobbler" is an actual trade.
Truth is, there's a lot more to making a shoe than you might expect, but at the same time, it's also a lot simpler a process, too.
In this age of "green living" and with the recent upsurge of interest in all sorts of "do it yourself" projects, making your own shoes is a fascinating idea; this lens should help you understand the steps in the process, and give you an idea of whether or not this is a project you'd like to undertake.

There Are Ten Steps In Building A Shoe
- Measuring the foot (and building or selecting the appropriate size last)
- Drafting the Pattern (of course, if you already have a pattern to follow, say from a worn out shoe you've disassembled, you can skip this.)
- Cutting the pieces.
- Stitching the pieces together to form the shoe upper.
- "Lasting" (place the shoe onto the last)
- Hammering (yes, you do this with a hammer ... )
- Trimming
- Grinding
- Applying the Soles
- Finishing the shoe.
Regardless of complexity, all shoes have some basic parts.
Quarter, Vamp, Tongue, Insole, and Heel
There is no tongue on this drawing, by the way, nor sole.

The Quarter is the part along the top of the shoe, the vamp & tongue cover the toes and come up the top of the foot, the Insole goes inside the shoe, and the heel is the back part. There are variations, of course ... some shoes are slip ons that lack heels or tongues - but over all, the parts of the shoe are not all that different from when this picture was drawn in the late 1800's.

Make Your Own Shoes
by Mary Wales Loomis
This book was published in the 1970's and 30 years later is still going strong. I'm not sure how the 2009 version differs from the 1979 version, but I imagine they are both good representations of how to craft a woman's decorated pump. I've just started a course and I can't do anything at home as I haven't got the tools (such as the sole hammer, soft-headed hammer, lasting pincers, hook knife and skiving knife. I can't even find nice-shaped lasts in my size( aust 8 -8.5, or europe 39)
