For many years now, I have felt that Canadians, although great people, have had an inferiority complex about just how great they are. In the area of art, handcrafted work, originality and quality of design, I feel we can compete with anyone in the world, and outshine many of them. I left the corporate world 17 years ago and opened The Cobblestone Gallery in Waterloo, Ontario. It began as a modest shop representing a select few Canadian Artists and Artisans. It has grown to include work from over 200 Canadian Artists and Artisans from all Provinces and Territories in all media. Every week we are proving that Canadian Artist can compete with anyone in the world.

Greg Humphreys Woodturner

Greg Humphreys, from Kitchener, Ontario, is a full time professor at University of Guelph. For over 20 years he has had another profession as a woodturner of unique handturned bowls, vases and vessels. He has used this "hobby" as a form of relaxation and self expression.
One of the most amazing things about his work is that he does "Green Wood Turnings". He may find an interesting tree which is being cut down one day, and withing a week, has pieces turned from it. He says that at times the wood is so wet, he almost needs a raincoat while turning. As the turned wood dries, it changes shape and interesting contours can develop. Once finished, Greg applies up to 15 coats of a raw, natural, food safe tung oil to each piece. Each coat must dry for up to a week, and be buffed before the next coat is applied. The result is a truly beautiful and unique piece of wooden art with a porcelain like finish. His work is perfect as a wedding or anniversary gift, or for anyone who enjoys beautiful handcrafted wood.
While in Waterloo, see the large selection of wood turnings by Greg Humphry, at The Cobblestone Gallery.
