Santa Cruz Basilica second oldest church in the city was built in the year 1503 by the Portuguese settlement. Later it was destroyed and restored by the east India Company. The Santa Cruz basilica is the eight basilicas, a roman public building in the country. The historical buildings of Cochin tell a fascinating tales about the bygone glory. The building has preserved the rich heritage of the Portuguese and Dutch along with the Maharajas, immortal on the pages of history.

The Paradise Synagogues was built by the Jewish Community residing in Kerala. The floor of the synagogue is composed of hundreds of Chinese hand-painted porcelain tiles. The ceiling and the chandeliers create a contrast which is unique. There is also an oriental carpet, a souvenir from the last Ethiopian Monarch. The most visible part of the Synagogue is the clock tower of 18th century which along with other parts of the complex was repaired under the guidance of World Monuments Fund.

Mattencherry Palace which in the 16th century was a Dutch building now converted into a Hindu temple, a religious site. The Mattencherry is an interesting museum with ancient murals scene from the Ramayana and a series of portraits of the Royals of Kerala. With an entry fees of Rs 5 /-, the Mattencherry palace is a must see place in Cochin.

Cochin Backwater

Cochin is furthermore a backwater destination in Kerala. A cozy Carl Dale house boat ride along the lust paddy fields is a unique experience. The backwater of Cochin is a home of many fishes, frogs, crabs and turtles. The Malabar houses in Cochin offers a delightful stay with excellent cuisine and prompt service. The rates are also reasonable. The Malabar House is a pleasant time-honored hotel which reflects the past in the present.
