OK - you did it! Freaked me out with the fact that a roach can live a week without it's head! Blessed for the freakiest thing I've read today.

Missed out on the videos (dinnertime here), but interesting to learn more about cockroaches!
  • vbright105 Jan 19, 2012 @ 6:12 pm | delete
Maybe I should market the vids for weight loss, eh Richard? Seems no one wants to look at them, especially at dinner time. Thanks for stopping by!!

Now you did it. I have to tell my cockroach story. Back in the 70's I lived in a commune where the residents did not believe in killing anything. Including cockroaches. When we would go to the dining room in the morning and go to pour a cup of coffee, the roaches would run out to say good morning to us. I swear this was true. No one was really upset about it, it became kind of humorous after a while.
  • vbright105 Jan 19, 2012 @ 5:37 pm | delete
HAHA! That's funny. I am not fond of roaches, but of all of them, it is the "waterbugs" I hate most. The BIG, dark colored bugs..yuk. I used to stay in a cabin in Maine where I had a mouse that would come out onto the mantle every day for cheese. I liked him tho. :) Thanks for the smiile, Diane

I admit it - I didn't watch any of the videos. I just don't like seeing these creepy crawly things moving or people eating them. Ewwww! But I loved the facts. White blood? Able to live a week without a HEAD? Cockroaches are bizarre creatures!
  • vbright105 Jan 19, 2012 @ 5:37 pm | delete
Hey, the vids were hard for me to watch too...can you imagine? Thanks for stopping by
  • Brite-Ideas Jan 16, 2012 @ 5:35 pm | delete
I have to say "ewwwwwwwwww"...it was hard to read it..but so interesting at the same time! I learned a few things I hope I never have to know about, lol

Cockroaches aren't that bad, I haven't actually seen any where we live in France, but they were everywhere when we visited Cyprus. We actually found one fried in a meal when we were there and now I know I should have considered it as an extra, didn't really fancy it though :-). Nice lens.
  • EMangl Oct 2, 2011 @ 12:55 am | delete

Thanks for all this information on roaches. I especially appreciated the photos.
  • Tolovaj Jul 8, 2011 @ 11:24 pm | delete
The most amazing fact about cockroaches is they can survive without head for so long. The reason for this are two independent nervous systems (one in head and one in behind). About nuclear explosion: no living creature can survive the heat of nuclear explosion but some species are much more resistant to radiation than other. As far as I know scorpions are on the top of the list with some insects (including cockroaches) following them. Thumbs up!
  • KrisB100 Jul 8, 2011 @ 9:53 am | delete
roaches are really interesting. I heard that recently scientists discovered a new species of roaches in south Africa that can jump like a grasshopper.

Hi, I could not look at the full lens, not out of dislike, it looks like its really well done, but I am adoring of most of mother nature but the stealthy cockroach is something I have quite a phobia on. It is really weird as I am learning to love all things bug but the cockroach.... I do believe the cockroach is my shadow totem (you may already know about having animal totems) an animal that has wisdom for me and strength that when I am able to face it I will gain a lot. I came to your lens after searching for cockroach on squidoo as I am considering writing a lens (when I am feeling brave enough) on cockroaches. Moreso to overcome my phobia and embrace this creature. So thanks for paving the way for me. I will say great lens from scanning as I imagine it really really is. I did some EFT on a wasp and bee phobia and now love bees and like wasps. So when its the perfect time will have to do it on the cockroach, eek! thanks for opening my mind.

I'm generally interested in insects, but must admit cockroaches and the info you provided gave me the creeps. Despite that, Angel Blessings on this lens and it will be featured on The Best Insect Webpages on Squidoo.

Very interesting lens that put some of myths and superstitions concerning roaches. I live in a high rise apartment building on the 18th floor and every couple of months the exterminator sprays my floor to keep the little critters under control.

I have found out that roaches respond to behavior modifiication quite well. When I started to manually kill them over a period of several days...adults, teenagers, and babies they all whent into a virtual recluse. I have not see any roaches on kitchen sink, cabinets, or baseboards for a couple of months...I think they are able to genetically transfer a "danger code" to their offsprings. This is by no means a scienctific study, just my personal observation on keeping them under control until the next extermination spray date.

I admit I couldn't watch the videos, although I do find the subject interesting. Some of the facts I already knew, but there was new information I wasn't aware of. I didn't know anybody ate roaches, but I guess it shouldn't surprise me since I recently learned that dung beetles are eaten. I shudder to think of eating a roach or having a roach crawl on me. The most interesting factoid for me was why boric acid kills them - I knew that it worked, but I had no idea why. Very educational lens.

    Source of protein huh?, Really?,
Make my source of protein a grilled fillet of Tilapia,
or a medium rare cooked Ribeye!
Insects of the order Blattaria are not presently on my list, thank you.
Otherwise, great info and lens. BG

I actually read the whole lens but I didn't watch the videos! I admit that I found the facts about cockroaches interesting, but they make my skin crawl. Yuck!

Cockroaches are considered delicacies in Cambodia. Good source of protein. But these are from the fields, not the ones in the cities. I see them all the time in the market in Phnom Penh but I just can't make myself eat it.

Crushed cockroaches when applied to a wound, can help ease the sting. Wow. I lived in Louisiana for a while and the cockroaches absolutely gross me out. Great information here. They still get my gag reflex going. LOL

    great info. gross videos. :)

i want to know if its true that if you squash a cockroach does it spread eggs which can then spread to you having more roaches???
  • vbright105 Jun 26, 2010 @ 10:24 am | delete
When a female roach dies, she releases the egg sack. Some of the babies survive, some do not. It could, potentially lead to more roaches which is why you should treat the home with boric acid or another means of ridding the home of roaches

Yuck! Interesting but cockroaches still seem creepy-crawly...

LOL But, I know this is your usual well-researched and good work... Lens is up to your usual quality, But the subject is not my cup of tea. Yuk
  • poddys Nov 9, 2008 @ 5:14 pm | delete
This is a very good and informative lens, but not for the squeamish! 5***** but I will give the videos a miss... My ex-in-laws house in Florida was (and is) always dirty, and you would always find roaches everywhere, as well as ants. One day my mother-in-law opened the kitchen cupboard where they keep the medicines, which is next to the hood over the stove. One large roach leapt out, followed by a second. These were close to 2 inches long. In the process of cleaning out the cupboard, she killed a total of 15 roaches... Nasty ugly things. Yuck!
  • topstuff Nov 9, 2008 @ 2:22 pm | delete

No I would never lay down with a cockroach. Not for a million bucks. And no, I wouldn't eat them either, but I would give you 5 stars. Good research on cock roaches.
