Coco Chanel Movie Trailer
The making of Coco Chanel with Shirley MacLaine.
Shirley MacLaine plays the part of the aged Coco who is reflecting on the legacy she has left behind with her friend, Marc Bouchier (played by Malcolm McDowell.) MacLaine's version of Coco is, as Amazon says, "equal parts arrogant, dismissive, and steadfast' but also vulnerable, once we meet the real woman.
The cast also features Barbora Bobulova, who plays a young Coco, pursuing her passion.
Whether or not you love fashion but particularly if you are intrigued by it, you will enjoy learning about Coco Chanel's life from her childhood in an orphanage, to her seamstress years, to becoming a well-known celebrity in the fashion world and finally, to her old age.
Unable to find a typical movie trailer, I found, instead this one in which Shirley MacLaine describes the making of Coco Chanel. It is a bit longer than an ordinary trailer and a bit different but it does offer a peek into the making of Coco Chanel, the movie.

My Review of Coco Chanel in 100 Words or Less
This movie about Coco Chanel was an entertaining, historical film that I enjoyed. I am in no way a fashionista but rather I am ordinarily a jeans and t-shirt type of person but I do enjoy the history of fashion and period movies and I did enjoy this one, particularly the parts that occurred when Chanel was a younger woman.
I was less keen about Shirley MacLaine's role and found it detracted rather than added to the movie. Her performance did receive mixed reviews in the press. However, I thought the rest of the cast, in particular Barbora Bobulova and Olivier Sitruk, were extremely well played.
Reviews Of Coco Chanel By The Experts
- Coco Chanel Movie Review
- "COCO CHANEL begins with the fashion icon (deftly played by Shirley MacLaine) in her twilight years, steeped in wealth and fame, still issuing game-changing designs and collections."
- Shirley MacLaine in 'Coco Chanel' TV review
- "This really is Bobulova's film, billing notwithstanding, and she makes a lovely Gabrielle. She easily convinces us of the young woman's determination, stubbornness and deep longing for love and faithfulness. The supporting cast is equally fine, especially Sitruk as Coco's great love."
- Coco Chanel Review By The New York Times
- "The film, to be shown Saturday, begins with Gabrielle Chanel at 71, during her critically disastrous 1954 comeback show, and recounts her life in a series of flashbacks that portray it as one long, continuous attempt to travel to the other side of the velvet rope."
Coco Chanel (2008) Amazon Customer Reviews
As always, I look to the Amazon customer reviews to see what they think about Coco Chanel and I find comments like that of Cynthia who says that this movie has dramatic story, fabulous actors and fabulous fashion. L.C. Fox says that if you love the history of fashion or romance stories, then you will love Coco Chanel. Finally, J.J. Sigler called it a very interesting story saying that it was well directed and beautifully filmed in France. He closes with "Above all the negative, jealous people, CoCo maintained her focus, her infamous style and her dignity."
