Cocoa and Little Men; a warm memory from my childhood

Ranked #21,951 in Food & Cooking, #410,325 overall

What the heck is Cocoa and Little Men?

I know you all know what a hot cocoa drink is, but I'm positive that you don't know what little men are. No, no, not those little green men from mars, little men is a term my mother came up with and used for one of my favorite childhood treats.

So many families have those special moments or memories and this is one I am sharing with you.

I hope you enjoy this little piece of my childhood that I remember so fondly.

So what are Little Men?

It's not a big secret, and it isn't anything fancy. Little men are created from a piece of bread, buttered and then sliced.

How imaginative and smart my mom was, instead of calling it cocoa and bread, she called it cocoa and little men which sounds much more like fun!

Introducing ........ Little Men

A Warm Childhood Memory

I often think back to the wonderful memories of my mother and I sitting at the table on a cold winter day, with our little men lined up beside that cup of hot cocoa (with lots of marshmallows).

Many years later I wondered why my mother would come up with a treat like this. I mean really, bread with cocoa?

I'm pretty sure that back in the '50's and '60's and being newly married with two young kids, I'm guessing money must have been tight. We were a family that loved sweets, ok, mostly me, and there was probably not enough money left over for fancy desserts.

And who would have thought that something so simple was so special to me!

Mom and Me (before cocoa and little men)

Funny Moments

One time my mother was at her doctors office for an appointment and the doctor was asking her general questions. Now keep in mind, that my mom used to love to tease and torment him.

When he asked mom what she had for breakfast, she replied "cocoa and little men".

Mom told me I should have seen the confused look at his face, and knowing he didn't have a clue what that was, she laughed to herself as he quietly wrote down her answer but didn't have the nerve to ask her what that was. You know doctors, they don't like to admit they don't know something!

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall that day LOL.

And Wendy wanted to know....

I had visited Wendy's cute Christmas Holiday Traditions lens and left a comment mentioning my Cocoa and Little Men.

Pssst, this is Wendy -------------------------->

Shortly after that I received an email from Wendy thanking me for leaving comments on her lens, wasn't that nice of her, and to be sure to send her my lens about "cocoa and little men", that I had her curious. :)

So Wendy, I shall be sending you the link to this lens FIRST!

I think all great mothers do this. To get us to eat my mum pretended we were in a dinner. She was the waitress. We would say "What you got to eat Mrs?" and she would rhythm off a list of what she had already made or was available in the cupboard. This went on for quite some time occasionally as adults we would be sitting in the kitchen and say,"What you got Mrs.?" One of her favourite "specials" was "Egg in a Cup." A favorite that has been passed on to my nephew.

Also my brother would not eat link sausage until my Uncle, who was in the British Army, told him they were enemy soldiers and you cut off their heads. Gruesome I know but he eat.
