How much do you know about Coconuts?

The coconut is an important part of the diet of many Asian, Caribbean and Pacific island populations. It's milk, meat and oil are used for cooking as well as for its medicinal benefits. Coconut is highly nutritious and rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

The coconut is used in both traditional and modern medicine. In the islands one of the most popular uses for coconuts in medicine is to cure stomach problems ranging from bacterial infections, parasites, and ulcers as well as improving overall digestion and absorption.

While the oil in the coconut is a saturated fat it is different than other saturated fats. Most of the oils in our diets are composed of Long-chain fatty acids or LCFA, Coconut oil is made of mostly medium chain fatty acids or MCFA, these are also known as Medium chain triglycerides or MCT. What exactly does that mean? That means that the fat in coconuts is not only not harmful but good for you. Coconut oil does not negatively affect you cholesterol and is even helpful in preventing hear disease.

But we've just scratched the surface here. Check out our quizzes (and we will continue to add to this list) to see how much you really know about this amazing food!

Natural Health Remedy - Coconut Water

If you are visiting or living in a tropical area it is also good to note some of the natural health benefits of the coconut.

Parasites
One major problems of the less developed countries is parasites. Due to the fact that they are often in the water this can affect you from many sources. Most People know it is not a good idea to the water when visiting Mexico, the Caribbean etc. However, this same water is used for washing, bathing and often preparing food, so the possibility of getting parasites exists even if you only drink bottled water.

The high level of Lauric Acid in young green coconut water is very helpful in fighting viruses as well as parasites. If you are starting to feel a loose stool or you are getting diaria this can be one of the easier ways to help get rid of the problem. You will find coconut stands all over in the Caribbean. As long as the glass or cup they give you is clean, the coconut water is sterile and will help get rid of the parasites while also rehydrating you as effectively as sports drinks.

Coconut water as a Sports drink
As mentioned earlier, coconut water makes for an effective sports drink and is also very useful in replacing liquid in your body when you have diaria or are vomiting (if either is heavy, it is always a good idea to see a doctor). Coconut water can lessen nausea while replacing electrolytes and other necessary minerals lost with diaria and vomiting. One cup of coconut water contains 56mg of calcium, 48mg of phosphorus, 600mg of potassium, and 60mg of magnesium.
