Coconut-uses. are so varied there are maybe more than a hundred coconut products and by products. They range from health products, skin care , food fuel, and furnishings.
Once a very viable industrial product in the Jamaican economy, but has lost its position due to the devastating disease that hit the industy some years ago. Coconut has not gained back its former position of glory in the island's ecomomy but is is still a part of the food industry on the island.

Jamaica is one of the Caribbean countries that boast a number of coconut palms. Over the years the island has suffered because of the attack on its coconut plants by devastating diseases thus reducing the viability of the coconut to the island's economy.
The Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera) also referred to by many individuals in Jamaica as copra is a member of the Family Arecaceae (palm family). It is the only species in the genus Cocos, and is a large palm, growing to 30 m tall, with pinnate leaves 4-6 m long, pinnate. The old leaves usually break away cleanly leaving the trunk smooth. The term coconut refers to the seed of the coconut palm.
The coconut palm is grown throughout the tropical world and is used for decoration as well as for many culinary dishes and other non-culinary uses such as ornament for the hair jewelry, ornamental decoration for the home. Virtually every part of the coconut palm has some resourceful uses to humans

-Coir used as rope mats ,use to pot plants and caulking for boats
- Coconut oil Process to get oil used for cooking, cosmetics, and massage and hair oils.
-Copra This is often referred to as the meat in the dried from which the oils is extracted.
- Leaves These provides material for hats , table mat, decoration for buildings and roofing.
-The stiff leaflet midribs can be used to make cooking skewers, kindling arrows, or are bound into bundles, brooms and brushes.
-Palm wood comes from the trunk and is now being used as an ecologically-sound substitute for endangered hardwoods. Used for furniture and specialized construction such as (Manila's Coconut Palace)

-The husk and shells can be used for fuel and are a good source of charcoal.

Coconut plays an important part in the culture of many countries .In some countries no ritual is complete without the inclusion of coconut.Once mistakenly believed to be unhealthy because of its high saturated fat content, it is now known that the fat in coconut oil is a unique and different from most all other fats and possesses many health giving properties. It is now gaining long overdue recognition as a nutritious health food.
