Learn how to head glitch
It goes without saying that the less an opponent can see of you the greater chance you have in winning the confrontation. This is why moving from places of cover and surveying your situation constantly is probably the most important practice in the game. Head "Glitching" isn't really a "glitch" per se it just sounds better compared to the old name; "Head Peaking" which actually describes what you're doing way better. Go Figure.
In order to head glitch; stand behind something that cannot be shot through and adjust your aim until you are looking just barely over the edge of cover. You will have a clear view of anyone that walks in front of you, however they will usually only be able to see the very tip of your head or sometimes none of you at all. If you don't want to have a campers' gamestyle you must master getting into head glitch spots very quickly so that you are always moving through areas where you have the advantage over your opponents.
Use the right gear for the situation
Of course I do mean to use weapons that are suited for the areas that you will be fighting in. It's normally a good idea to "pause" the game and check out the map so you can plot out pathways that give you the advantage. I am also referring to your own personal gear that you use to play the game.
Using certain equipment to play the game can help you to gain the edge over your opponents, for example FPS Freeks help improve your aim and using at good headset can help you "see through walls" by hearing in game sounds that you might not otherwise. Even though having a good headset is not necessary to play the game, it really helps a lot. This applies to all First person Shooters; to play very well it is absolutely necessary to pick up on every sound and explain to your self what could have caused it.
Watch Call of Duty: Black ops gameplay videos on YouTube or Theater mode
By watching other people play (yes, I do mean spectating and killcams too) you will often notice small habits and tactics, remember that everything someone does is for a reason. You may notice that all good players do some sort of head glitching, will usually Aim Down Sights (ADS) around corners and near blind spots and they will rarely stand near doors or windows because they are like bullet magnets. Also try to stick to the edge of the map; there is less opposition on the edges, fewer angles that you can be attacked from and a reduced chance that enemies will spawn behind you.
