The Call of Duty Series

Ranked #4,487 in Games, #191,374 overall

My Experiences with the CoD Series

The Call of Duty series (COD) is one of the most renown and popular WWII FPS video games. Although the first, second, third, and fifth games of the COD series are WWII are based in the WWII times, the fourth game is based in modern times. It's very interesting to see how the COD series has evolved into the incredibly popular game series it is today. I have compiled a lot of information about each game in this lens. I hope you enjoy it!

Back when I first played Call of Duty 1, I thought (and my mind hasn't changed) it was amazing. The environments, weapons, and plots are very impressive, even today.

Eastern front

In the Russian campaign, Private Aleksandr Sokolov starts in Stalingrad, Russia. After fighting his way up a shoreline and through several buildings, Sokolov meets Lieutenant Tanya Pavelonva. She sends Sokolov on a mission to capture a German bunker. After the mission is completed, Sokolov becomes Pavelovna's spotter as the two work to harass the Germans. The game then switches over to Pavelonva. Pavelona then clears out a section of German-occupied sewers and helps defend a tractor factory that has been converted to the role of manufacturing T-34s. After successfully defending the factory, a tank crew led by Nikolai Badanov arrives to man the tank just as a Panzer IV advances on the factory. Atop the T-34, Sokolov and Pavelonva escape the factory. The player next assumes the role of Nikolai Badanov. After fighting through pockets of German resistance, Nikolai stops at General Belov's headquarters. He receives orders to deliver a radio to a team of spotters. The spotters' radio had been damaged and the Soviet artillery has not been receiving target coordinates. Badanov's task is to recapture the ruins of Red Square, arrive at the Stalingrad train station, break through to the team and deliver the radio. Thanks to Badanov, the German force is destroyed by rockets and General Belov is safe. Afterwards, Badanov is involved in the Russian assault on a German airfield at Tatsinskaya. This attack is codenamed Operation Little Saturn. After fighting through the heavily defended barracks and supply areas, Nikolai and other T-34s proceed to the airstrip to destroy German aircraft. Upon destroying the airfield they meet up with more Soviets to assault the German headquarters which is the air traffic control.

North African front

The British campaign follows Edward Carlyle. Carlyle embarks on a night time raid in Matmata to destroy a German fuel depot. The commando team led by Sergeant Starkey manages to destroy the depot, a radio post and an electrical generator. Sticky bombs and teller mines are used to take out German armor. After the Matmata raid, a jeep picks up Starkey and Carlyle. As they refuel in the desert, a German shoots the machine gunner. Carlyle mans the .50 caliber machine gun to shoot at German vehicles, aircraft and soldiers. A Stuka drops a bomb that separates Starkey and Carlyle. Thrust into the battle for an unnamed Roman fortress, Carlyle destroys the German entrance to stop them from entering and silences the MG42s. He then rescues Sgt. Dehart, who was trapped on the roof of a German strongpoint. After being rescued, Dehart tells Carlyle that a cartographer is being held prisoner. This cartographer has vital information: he knows a way to outflank Rommel through the desert. Carlyle finishes off the German remnants and rescues the cartographer. He also finds Starkey while saving him.

Western front

The American missions see the player control Chuck Walker, sergeant of the American 1st Infantry Division. The first three missions concentrate on the capture of Aachen. For their service in Aachen, Walker and his friend Benny Church are promoted. After capturing Aachen, the story shifts focus to M4 Sherman tank commander Sam Rivers, a young black man who has been made sergeant for his commitment and bravery. After successfully helping to fend off Germans around Bastogne, the player returns to the now-Lieutenant Walker. Walker's new mission is to infiltrate the city of Remagen and scout the status of a bridge that is rumoured to still stand over the Rhine. After finding the bridge, Walker teams up with Rivers as he and his men protect Rivers' tanks and escort them to the bridge. Upon reaching the bridge, a huge hole in the ground prevents the tanks from moving on, which means Walker and his squad must capture the bridge alone. After crossing, Walker operates a Flakvierling anti-aircraft gun on top of a tower and fends off the counterattacking German Stukas. After rebuffing the aerial threat, Walker hangs the US flag over the tower and waves the tank column in.

Call of Duty 2

Campaign Storyline

The Call of Duty 2 single player splits into two campaigns: The north American campaign and the Battle of Normandy.

Article credit to Wikipedia.org

North African campaign

The player takes control as a British soldier, Sergeant John Davis of the 7th Armoured Division. The first level has the player in a sneak attack on German troops, ending with the destruction of a valuable German supply station. The next map on the same night has the player defending a crucial town from overwhelming numbers of Germans, finally achieving victory by destroying much of the German tank force using artillery. This is followed by the Second Battle of El Alamein, during which the player has to fight through several trenches, machine gun nests, flak 88s and finally taking the German's field HQ. The assault on El Daba to intercept the remaining Germans in Egypt and destroy several flak 88s soon follows, ending the first British campaign.[14] An addendum to the second set of missions has the player taking on the role of a British Tank commander, David Welsh. The first mission of the third campaign in Toujane, Tunisia, has the player immediately under fire, holding a household with a single machine gun and then wreaking havoc with an armored car, forced out by mines. They soon break out in a narrow escape and rendezvous with the second squad.

Battle of Normandy

As Corporal Bill Taylor and Brian Person of the 2nd Ranger Battalion, the player starts off by playing a part in D-Day, at the assault of Pointe du Hoc, to destroy a German artillery battery, and hold it against a massive German counteroffensive in the following mission. Soon after, the player captures a nearby town and serves as a sniper against mortar crews until reinforcements arrive. The second US campaign is focused on Hill 400, involving the capture of Bergstein, a disastrous charge at Hill 400's bunkers and the defense against the German counterattack, with the player again performing sniper work against German mortar teams, destroying enemy armor, and generally holding the hill against the counteroffensive, all the while burdened by artillery and overwhelming numbers of German soldiers. The final British mission takes place during the Battle of Normandy for control of Caen.

Call of Duty 3

Call of Duty 3 has four large campaigns: American, British/French, Canadian, and Polish.

I played Call of Duty 3 for the first time right after watching Saving Private Ryan (an excellent movie). Call of Duty 3 captured that chaotic essence of war, and I loved it. The storyline also has some similar twists and turns that Saving Private Ryan did, but it doesn't matter.

Call of Duty 3's multiplayer was not as fun. It took a long (and I mean LONG) time to get into a game, and then it was usually unbalanced (allies vs. axis). Not only that though, the sounds acted odd in the MP as well. Sometimes everything was silent and you couldn't find anyone on the map, but sometimes everybody was around you and the sound was having a party!

One thing (practically the only thing) that I did like a lot in CoD3's MP was the ability to be a medic. You started with a shot gun, and whenever people died, you had a few seconds to sprint over to where they were lying and revive them. I loved doing it and I really felt like a hero... ;)

Call of Duty 3 American Campaign Plot

Article credit to Wikipedia.org

In the American missions, the player assumes control of Private Nichols, recently arrived in France and eventually attached to the 29th Infantry Division. Nichols and his squad participate in the capture of Saint-Lô. After that, the squad is folded into the 90th Infantry Division and sent to secure the wooded area of Saint Germain-Sur-Seves, where intense hedgerow fighting took place. Soon after, the 90th assaults the town of Mayenne, where Pvt. Huxley (voiced by Benjamin Diskin) is tasked with defusing bombs planted on a bridge, which is heavily guarded by German infantry. Huxley is wounded before he can carry out the order and Sergeant McCullin successfully defuses the bombs, but is killed in the process. His last words (to Dixon) are "Tell Guzzo...tell him...tell him to go to Hell." Corporal Dixon then assumes command of the squad and is promoted to sergeant.

The squad is later tasked with clearing out Forêt d'Ecouves, so 2nd Battalion can move through. In the end, Nichols clears the last roadblock with a mortar. The squad then participates in clearing out a nearby town with a vital crossroads. Towards the end of the assault Dixon is wounded but survives. After taking a shortcut through the sewers, they find the crossroads and take it successfully, with the help of Sherman tanks. The unit is then sent to defend the town of Chambois from Axis forces trying to run through the Falaise Gap.

Private First Class Guzzo marks German positions with flares for air support.Earlier, the squad had supported Baker Company and held a heavy position while Huxley went to get a bazooka to hold off German tanks. The squad tried to hold position, but they were soon heavily out gunned and fled to rally point, and The Germans did not hesitate to chase them. The squad fell back to a heavy German emplacement. Guzzo laid smoke grenades as targets for air support. While laying smoke, Guzzo is wounded, and Dixon and Nichols come to his aid and extract him to relative safety. While treating Guzzo, Dixon is shot in the back, and dies a few moments later.

Guzzo takes command of the squad. After fighting through the rest of the town, the squad then holds off the Germans until reinforcements arrive. Guzzo is then shown as the new leader of the squad, giving a "pep talk" to some fresh soldiers. He has been promoted to sergeant. Presumably, Huxley and Nichols were promoted to corporal and Dixon and McCullin were awarded a Bronze Star or another similar military honor.

During the British and French campaign, the player controls Sergeant James Doyle, a returning character from Call of Duty: United Offensive and member of the British Special Air Service. Doyle parachutes into France with a squad led by Major Ingram, also of Call of Duty: United Offensive fame, and meets up with members of the Maquis Resistance. Due to fire from an 88 mm gun, their Handley Page Halifax is shot down. The plane drops the squad and the two jeeps. Soon after making contact with the French resistance, SAS and French Resistance fighters attack a German anti-aircraft position.

The French Resistance and SAS then try to destroy a German-held fuel plant. While escaping, Ingram is captured and tensions rise as Corporal Keith accuses one of the Resistance members, Marcel, of collaborating with the Germans. Against the advice of the Resistance, Keith and Doyle attempt to locate Ingram. Soon after rescuing Ingram, French and British fighters attempt to stop the executions of captured Resistance fighters. They rush to save as many as they can, but in the process the Resistance loses one of their significant members, Isabelle DuFontaine, who is killed after planting an explosive charge on an armored car. Keith is then seen comforting Marcel, showing that he does have some respect for the French resistance.

Call of Duty 3 Canadian Campaign Plot

Article credit to Wikipedia.org

The Canadian aspect of the campaign involves members of the 4th Canadian (Armoured) Division. It is centered on Private Cole, led by World War I veteran Lieutenant Jean-Guy Robichaud, who demonstrates a proud and often haphazard style of leadership, often making assaults and completing objectives beyond his assigned mission at the risk of his own men. Robichaud commands a platoon in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada. The platoon captures an industrial area and successfully defends it from a larger German force.

While the Polish 1st Armored Division guards their western flank, the unit clears a forest near the Laison River, during which Robichaud berates a young radio operator, Pvt. Leslie Baron, over his lack of combat participation. Tension builds between the two, and Baron insists that he is not a coward. Robichaud dismisses him and assigns him to act as radio operator for a Polish unit.

Robichaud proceeds to clear a town to rescue a captured Canadian tank crew, but rather than withdraw with the rescued servicemen he decides to assist in capturing the whole town. After a King Tiger tank appears, the men plant demolition charges in a German ammunition dump to destroy the tank. But one of the fuses is defective, and while Callard attempts to disable it, it explodes. Robichaud and Cole are wounded, and Sergeant Callard is killed. A saddened Robichaud decides to nominate Callard and Cole for the Victoria Cross and promote Cole, and presumably Private Peterson, to corporal. They then start moving reinforcements through the town to help the Polish defending Hill 262.

Call of Duty 3 Polish Campaign Plot

The Polish campaign revolves around Cpl. Bohater, a tank driver in the Polish 1st Armored Division. Bohater participates in a sweep across the French countryside, engaging German armor. The Polish later move into position at the base of Hill 262, which is assaulted by the remnants of the German 7th army desperate to escape the Falaise Pocket. Bohater and his crew defend the hill against German tanks, but eventually their tank is damaged and the crew abandons it. They join in the battle alongside the Polish infantry units and other tank crews, holding off the German attack.

The Polish continue to take heavy casualties, including two of the main characters, Corporal Rudinski and Sergeant Kowalski, while waiting for Canadian reinforcements, start to retreat up the Mace through pockets of German-infested trenches. The Canadian radio operator, Pvt. Baron, arrives to call in artillery and is killed by a stray shot after refusing to retreat from an overrun position. Ulan scavenges his radio, which is used again to call for artillery strikes. In the final minutes of the level, Major Jachowicz commands Bohater to defend the hill against the advancing German troops. He defends the other side of the hill and finally, as green flares illuminate the skies, the Canadian infantry arrives to save the day for the Poles on Hill 262. After the level, Lieutenant Robichaurd is seen talking with Major Jachowicz, saying that him and his men have done an excellent job at defending the hill, and also telling him that the Germans still have an escape route. That being Chambois. Presumably Bohater is promoted to Sergeant and Ulan is promoted to Corporal and the soldiers move to prevent the Germans from escaping in Chambois.

Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare

Image credit to Bit Tech.net (http://images.bit-tech.net)

Call of Duty 4 (COD4) has perhaps the most interesting and most enjoyable game play of all the Call of Duty games to date. COD4 was so different then the past games that that Infinity Ward has made it the beginning of a separate series altogether; the Modern Warfare series in which the second game, Modern Warfare 2, will be released on the 10th of November 2009. Call of Duty 4 has an extensive perk, and achievement earning system to enhance players game play experience.

I personally love CoD 4. It's my favorite Call of Duty game. It's campaign was interesting, beautifully crafted, and real enjoyable. It's multiplayer is so smooth that you can get into a match in seconds.

On a mission in the Bering Sea, Sergeant "Soap" MacTavish, Captain Price, "Gaz", and several SAS members find a nuclear device onboard a cargo ship. Suddenly, the ship is attacked, and the team evacuate with the cargo manifest, which provides evidence of ties between the Russian Ultranationalist Party and a rebel faction in the Middle East. Russian Ultranationalist Imran Zakhaev, who plans to return his motherland to the times of the Soviet Union, draws international attention away from his plans by funding a coup d'état in an unnamed Middle Eastern country, organized by a local separatist leader named Khaled Al-Asad. The British and American governments, who discover the plot, initiate a police action to stop the uprisings in both regions. After President Al-Fulani of the Middle Eastern country is executed on live television and Al-Asad takes control, the SAS rescue their compromised informant in the Russian Ultranationalist Party, Nikolai.

In an American invasion of the Middle Eastern country, a platoon from the USMC 1st Force Recon, led by Lieutenant Vasquez and Sergeant Paul Jackson, searches for Al-Asad, but only manages to secure a television station broadcasting Al-Asad's propaganda. During the final stages of the operation, United States Central Command is notified by Seal Team Six of a Russian nuclear weapon nearby, and sends the NEST to disarm it. However, the nuclear device suddenly detonates, leveling most of the city and killing everyone in the area, including Vasquez's squad, whose helicopter had not left the blast radius after coming to the last-minute rescue of the pilot of a downed AH-1 Cobra helicopter.

The British learn that Al-Asad fled the country before the USMC's invasion. With the help of their informant Nikolai, the SAS finds and interrogates Al-Asad. After learning from him that Zakhaev supplied the nuclear bomb, Captain Price executes Al-Asad. Price then has a flashback of his mission to eliminate Zakhaev in Prypiat, Ukraine, 15 years earlier. In the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Zakhaev took advantage of the turmoil to profit from nuclear proliferation and used his new wealth to lure soldiers from the Soviet Army to form his Ultranationalist Party. Price was paired with Captain MacMillan to carry out the black op assassination of Zakhaev. After stealthily sneaking into Prypiat and taking up a position in the top room of an abandoned hotel, MacMillan spotted Zakhaev while Price fired a .50 BMG sniper rifle, but Zakhaev survived, losing only an arm. Price and MacMillan were pursued from the scene and narrowly escaped.

Back in the present, a joint operation, by the SAS regiment under the command of Captain Price, a USMC Force Recon unit led by Staff Sergeant Griggs, and forces from the Russian military led by Sgt. Kamarov, is undertaken to stop Zakhaev. They capture his son Victor to learn of Zakhaev's whereabouts, but before they can question him, Zakhaev's son commits suicide. Zakhaev becomes enraged, blaming Western nations for the death of his son, and plans to retaliate by launching ballistic missiles armed with warheads at the United States. When SAS/USMC operatives arrive at the facility, Zakhaev manages to launch two missiles towards the United States. However, the squad successfully deactivates the missiles. They escapes the facility in military trucks, Zakhaev's forces in hot pursuit.

Before the squad can escape across a nearby bridge, it is destroyed by a gunship, leaving them trapped. Zakhaev's forces arrive and engage the remaining members of the strike force. Suddenly, Gaz receives a call from Sergeant Kamarov, informing him that his forces are on their way to help the American and British forces. On the bridge, a gas tanker explodes, incapacitating most soldiers nearby except Griggs, who is shot while trying to pull MacTavish to safety. Zakhaev, along with two of his soldiers, finish off Gaz and other surviving members of the strike force. He then begins to walk towards Soap and Price, but is distracted by the destruction of his gunship and the arrival of a Russian military helicopter. As Zakhaev looks away, Price slides his pistol to Soap, who shoots and kills Zakhaev and his two guards. When Kamarov and his team arrive, MacTavish is evacuated to safety, while a Russian medic attempts to resuscitate Price. MacTavish survives and becomes a captain in the SAS before leading an elite military force in Modern Warfare 2, but Griggs and Price's ultimate fates are unknown.

Call of Duty 4 Tier 1 Perks

Call of Duty has many perks, and they are listed along with descriptions below.

There are three tiers that you will gain access to by completing various achievements during game play.

Article credit to WeGame Wiki (http://wiki.wegame.com/Call_of_Duty_4_Perks/)

C4 x 2

C4's are a tricky item to use, but if done correctly, can be absolutely devastating. The trick to using C4's is to reach a highly active contact point early in the map. (Example: Grassy lot near the apartment in Strike [Fact Check, anyone?]) By tossing these near enemy entrances, they can be detonated at will, unlike claymores. [Need more information, I've never personally used these before, just going off what I've seen.]

Special Grenades x 3

Triple special grenades gives you three of either stun or flash grenades, depending on what you picked under your 'special grenades' category. You CANNOT receive three smoke grenades, as that would just get annoying. Nothing much to say here, but compared to other perks in this tier, probably not the best option.

RPG-7 x 2

This perk is more useful in Hard Core mode than in normal mode because the RPG will not do enough damage (besides a direct hit) to kill a person in normal. However, in Hard Core, an indirect hit (say, hitting a wall someone is standing in front of) will kill a person. Also, this perk is the best way to take out helicopters with 3 rockets taking out a normal helicopter and 2 rockets taking out a Hard Core chopper.

Claymore x 3

This perk is probably the most used in all of Tier 1, due to the fact that you can plant it and forget it, and usually receive kills for it. The trick with claymores is to plant it close enough to a door so that the blast will kill and entrant, but not close enough that it will be noticed before entering. The best place to plant a claymore is usually about 2 feet in against the wall near a door, angled slightly into the room so the blast will still kill a running entrant. If the claymore is pointed straight at the door the directed blast may not kill a sprinting player. This perk is best used by snipers, as it can protect the entrance to your sniping spot, preventing a embassing knife while scoping.

Frag x 3

Two words: NADE SPAM. Usually frowned upon in multiplayer because of the lack of skill involved, but an accurate nade storm can kill a fair amount of enemies. Just be prepared to be flamed.

Bandolier

Choosing this perk will give the player two [fact check, not sure about this] extra magazines of ammunition. Useful for camping out behind enemy lines, where moving to recover downed players ammo is not an option.

Bomb Squad

The bomb squad perk allows you to see enemy placed C4's and claymores, a very useful perk for the 'bunker clearing' player who likes to take out enemy snipers in order to advance team mates. Because snipers often choose claymores in order to defend their positions, choosing this perk will allow you to destroy their defenses and take them out.

Call of Duty 4 Tier 2 Perks

Article credit to WeGame Wiki @ http://wiki.wegame.com/Call_of_Duty_4_Perks/

Stopping Power

Stopping Power is one of the more useful perks in Tier 2, as it increases your bullet damage by approximately [x]%, leading to faster kills. Because of the increased damage already present in Hard Core modes, it is not recommended to use this while playing HC.

Juggernaut

Juggernaut doubles the damage a player can take before dieing. Using in Free-for-all due to the fact that you may be attacked from multiple hostiles at once.
Sleight of Hand This perk doubles the speed at which you reload, which is the most useful with classes that have LMG's, as they take forever to reload the normal way.

Double Tap

Double Tap increases your firing rate on all guns. I find it not very useful because almost always, 4-5 shots to the chest will kill a player, which you can easily get off in under a second.

Overkill

This perk allows you to start off each round with two rifles, and no pistol. You cannot choose two of the same gun, even if they have different attachements, but any combination of different guns is allowed. Hint: When this perk is used in conjunction with the Last Stand perk, you still pull out a pistol during the stand, even though you cannot use one regulary during your life. If this combination of perks is used, I believe you pull out an unsilenced M9 every time.

UAV Jammer

The UAV Jammer prevents you from showing up on enemy radar, which is best used with silenced guns or in Search and Destroy matches, where stealth is a huge factor in whether your team wins of loses.

Sonic Boom

Best used with the Frag x 3 or RPG-7 Tier 1 perk, this increases the damage and splash area [fact check?] inflicted by explosives like: frag grenades, RPGs, grenade launchers, claymores, and C4s.

Call of Duty 4 Tier 3 Perks

Article credit to WeGame Wiki @ http://wiki.wegame.com/Call_of_Duty_4_Perks/

Extreme Conditioning

One of the more useless perks avaiable in Call of Duty, this perk allows you to run for double the distance you would normally. Maybe you could use it in your first couple days playing to achieve the Marathon achievement and get some bonus xp, but after that, the other perks in this section are much for valuable to the player.

Steady Aim

A perk best used in classes with LMG's, it increases accuracy while 'firing from the hip' I.E. without aiming down the sights. This is a good perk for someone who isn't quick enough to aim down the sights when surprised by an enemy, but after your aim improves with game time, it's advised that you use a different perk from this tier, as it will aid in your game more.

Last Stand

The last stand perk allows you to pull out your pistol in a 'last stand' before you die. This stand takes place when you would normally be dead, I.E. you still not take the stand when you would normally be playing withouth this perk. ANY damamge received while in the last stand will kill the player, and the person with the final blow will be awarded the kill, not the one who does the damage that initiates the last stand. Although not on the same level as martyrdom, this perk is sometimes banned on servers, and you may be flamed for using it. In my personal opinion, you still have to aim and fire, so this perk deserves no negative words, but meh. I'm not the majority of the player base.

Martyrdom

This perk drops a primed grenade at your feet when you die, hopefully taking down any nearby enemies with you. WARNING: Using this perk is huge flamebait, especially in HC mode. It is regarded at cheap to use, so avoid it unless you don't mind being verbally abused.

Iron Lungs

This perk is an absolute necessity for any sniper class. This perk allows you to extend your held breath from the normal 4.5s to 9.5s, almost double the time to place incredibly accurate shots!

Dead Silence

Dead Silence muffles your footsteps, making it less likely that you will alert an enemy that you are sneaking up on. In Tier 3, this is not one of the most useful perks, perhaps only being used in organized Search and Destroy matches, where a high level of stealth is needed.

Eavesdrop

One of the least used perks in public servers, this allows you to hear enemy communications when you are near them. Because not many people use mics on public server, this is probably only used by highly organized clans. However, if you are a member of a highly organized clan, you probably know everything that I've written on this page, disagree with some of it, and wonder why you just wasted your time reading this whole article.

Campaign

Article credit to Wikipedia.org

The game starts in Makin Island at night on August 17, 1942. Private Miller watches the torture and execution of a fellow soldier by Japanese soldiers. As they turn towards Miller, he is rescued by his crew and they assault the island, replicating the Makin Island raid. The following mission then starts two years later, where the Americans assault the Japanese-held island of Peleliu. Miller calls in rocket strikes to take out Japanese Ha-G%u014D tanks. At the end of the mission, Sergeant Sullivan is fatally impaled through the stomach by a Japanese soldier who bursts through a door wielding a katana. The next mission starts in a swamp area of Peleliu, with Corporal Roebuck (now promoted to Sergeant after the death of Sullivan), as they travel to the Japanese-held airfield. Miller acquires a flamethrower, Rifle grenade launcher, and bazooka during the mission.

The game then jumps to the Soviet campaign on September 17, 1942, during the Battle of Stalingrad. Dimitri Petrenko wakes up amongst dead bodies of his fellow soldiers in the city's fountain, as the Germans shoot them. After they have gone, he meets Sergeant Reznov, a soldier from another unit. Reznov tells Dimitri that he wants to kill General Amsel, the man behind the Soviet casualties. After eliminating some German soldiers, Dimitri follows Reznov through buildings and streets as they kill Germans on their way, using sniper rifles and machine guns, until Dimitri kills Amsel; at which point they run away and jump into the river while being pursued by German soldiers. The following mission starts three years later at the Battle of Seelow Heights, near Berlin (where the Red Army had, in Reznov's words, taken the fight to "their land, their people, their blood."), where Dimitri has been captured and is in an abandoned house with three German soldiers. He attempts to steal a fallen comrade's Mosin-Nagant, only to be kicked in the face by a German soldier. At that moment, the Red Army attacks the abandoned house. One of the men who bursts in is none other than Sergeant Reznov, along with his subordinate, Private Chernov. Reznov is in awe that Dimitri has cheated death a second time in his presence and speaks of him as a hero. Together the Soviet troops advance through German lines, as Dimitri aids them with a Panzerschrek, as they reach a German camp.

The game returns back to Peleliu, where the Americans are pushing further inland through the island. Miller and his unit take out enemy mortar crews so their tanks can go inland. They then disable Japanese guns, facing out to sea and the Island of Peleliu falls into the hands of the Americans.
A firefight in the streets of Berlin

The following mission campaign returns to the Battle of Seelow Heights. Dimitri is at the controls of a T-34 tank as he helps the Soviet Army to reach the train station by destroying German tanks. He, along with Reznov and the Soviet troops, board a train to Berlin. Upon arrival, they engage German soldiers in buildings and around the streets, as the Germans are retreating. The following day, Dimitri watches a fellow Soviet execute a surrendering German soldier, much to the shock of Chernov ("This is not war - this is murder!"). They then move through buildings and streets clearing out Germans, until they reach the entrance to the Berlin U-Bahn. At the entrance, some German soldiers are encountered trying to surrender. However, due to the events in Stalingrad, Dimitri's comrades refuse to let them surrender and Reznov allows Dimitri to choose their method of death - he can kill them himself with his gun or let the other Red Army soldiers kill them with Molotov cocktails. They head into the U-Bahn and start fighting German resistance around the platforms until a surge of water engulfs the tunnel.

After the battle of Peleliu, the game shifts to the Battle of Okinawa and the mission "Black Cats", where the player takes control of Petty Officer Locke, in a PBY Catalina flying boat. He destroys Japanese PT Boats and merchant ships from the aircraft and then, on the way back to base, aids a U.S. fleet under attack. They rescue American sailors in the sea, while Locke shoots at Japanese PT boats and kamikaze planes, until more U.S. aircraft arrive. The game shifts back to Miller as he and his squad make a ground assault on Okinawa after the aircraft mission. They clear out Imperial soldiers from machine gun bunkers, allowing American tanks to progress. In the following mission, they are ambushed while retrieving ammunition before starting their assault on Shuri Castle. Miller kills Japanese crew around mortars and the courtyards. The Americans then storm Shuri Castle and clear most of it out. However, they then encounter some Japanese soldiers who pretend to surrender. When Polonsky and Roebuck go to disarm them, they attack them and pull out grenades. The player is given the choice of which of the two to save, with the other Marine being killed. The surviving Americans fight off a final Japanese counterattack and take Shuri Castle, capturing Okinawa. Miller is then given the dog tags of the fallen marine from his squadron by the survivor.

The penultimate mission starts as Reznov drags Dimitri out of the U-Bahn to regroup with Soviet infantry and snaps at Chernov, who has been writing a diary of his experiences by giving him the Soviet flag to plant when they take the Reichstag, telling him "no one will read this [diary]." They clear out buildings along a street to proceed towards the plaza outside the Reichstag, where Dimitri destroys Flak 88s and they take out the remaining German infantry defending the entrance to the Reichstag. As they are advancing up the stairs, however, Chernov is killed after a German flamethrower burns him alive. Reznov is devastated by the death of Chernov and, before continuing, he takes Chernov's diary with him, saying "Someone should read this." As they enter the Reichstag, they kill German soldiers in corridors, a lobby, and the main room. After that, they clear out remaining German infantry on the roof of the building. Dimitri then moves up to plant the Soviet flag, which has been dropped after its second bearer was killed in the gun battle. Before he can do so, a wounded German soldier rises up and shoots Dimitri with a pistol. Reznov comes to Dimitri's aid and kills the German with his machete. He helps Dimitri up and cuts the swastika off the flagpole at the top of the Reichstag. Dimitri then plants the flag, signaling Soviet victory over Germany. A final cutscene details the end of the war in Europe, the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the peace accord signed as a result.

Call of Duty 5 - World at War

Multiplayer

World at War has the same perks that Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare does. In many ways, WaW is like a WWII mod for Modern Warfare. Still, it's very enjoyable and a great game.

Nazi Zombies!

Along with the full campaign and multiplayer, World at War also comes with a mini-game called "Nazi Zombies." This small, but incredibly enjoyable, games experience is based off the eternal "Defense" system. In a selected level, you try to survive against wave after wave of zombies. You earn game money for killing zombies, and you can use the money to open doors, purchase perks, or buy new guns.

The maps that you play in are beat up old buildings that are full of windows and doors that the zombies crawl in through. Most windows and doors are barricaded with wooden boards. The zombies have to destroy the barricades to get through the door or window, but you can repair them to earn money.

You can play two person splits screen co-op on your local connection as well as online 4 person co-op. Sadly, but understandably, World at War cannot support two person online split screen. Split screen is only supported on your local network.
