Coe's List of Great Movie Quotes

"Here's looking at you, kid."

Movie quotes pop up in everyday conversation and some are so famous that you immediately know what movie they're from.

Here you'll find movie quotes galore and interesting tidbits about movies and Hollywood.

Some of My Favorites

These quotes crack me up!

"Let's see... flying rubber... flying rubber... Flubber?"

Fred MacMurray as "Professor Ned Brainard" in
THE ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR (1961)

"You see, swimming through corridors and up and down stairwells... I, I'm the only one here trained to do things like that!"

(Maybe this isn't meant to be funny but, come on, it's hilarious.)

Shelley Winters as "Belle Rosen" in
THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972)

"Everybody remember where we parked."

William Shatner as "Captain James T. Kirk" in
STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME (1986)

"I am Frau Blucher." (horses whinny)

Cloris Leachman as "Frau Blucher" in
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (1974)

Movie Quotes Before 1930

Talkies did not come out until 1927, so there aren't a lot of movie quotes before 1930. Here are quotes from two movies of that era.

Of course, the one that started it all is Al Jolson as "Jack Robin" aka "Jakie Rabinowitz" in the 1927 movie "The Jazz Singer."

"Wait a minute, wait a minute, you ain't heard nothin' yet!"

And the next is the disastrous 1929 "The Taming Of The Shrew" starring married silent-screen superstars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.

There's a legend that the screenwriter insisted on his name being credited as: "By William Shakespeare, with additional dialogue by Sam Taylor." If true, this is so funny!

A scene from 1929's "Taming of the Shrew"...

... the movie clip of which follows.

  • "How bright and goodly shines the sun!" Douglas Fairbanks as "Petruchio"

  • "The sun? The moon. It is not sunlight now." Mary Pickford as "Katherine"

  • "Hah. I say it is the sun that shines so bright." Douglas Fairbanks as "Petruchio"

  • "I know it is the moon that shines so bright." Mary Pickford as "Katherine"

  • "Oh, evermore crossed and crossed; nothing but crossed! Shall be sun or star or what I will!" Douglas Fairbanks as "Petruchio"

  • "Oh. It is the sun." Mary Pickford as "Katherine"

  • "Huh?" Douglas Fairbanks as "Petruchio"

  • "Or, if you please, call it a... a candle. I vow it shall be so for you." Mary Pickford as "Katherine"

  • "Nay, then you lie. It is the blessed moon." Douglas Fairbanks as "Petruchio"

  • "Then, God be blessed, it is the blessed moon. But moon it is not, when you say it is not, for the sun changes even as your mind. What you will have it named, even that it is, and so it shall be so for Katherine." Mary Pickford as "Katherine"

The YouYube clip of this scene is below. Follow along and

enjoy an early talkie!

Splendid Movie Quotes

Over 700 movie quotes listed alphabetically by movie title!

I was tired of reading movie quotes that aren't accurate. Like "Play it again, Sam" from Casablanca. Never said. The actual quote is "Play it, Sam. Play 'As Time Goes By'." Spoken by Ingrid Bergman as "Ilsa Lund Laszlo."

So I decided to make a list of movie quotes that are famous or I just found were great quotes, and I watched the movies and I heard the quotes myself, so I KNOW they are accurate.

I now have a list of over 700 quotes from over 300 movies - whew!

The movie quotes are alphabetized by movie title and include the actors and character names. I think you'll enjoy reading through them. They're super easy to read.

Here's where you can find them:

Splendid Movie Quotes.

Really and truly accurate.

We took this book with us on a trip to Los Angeles and had such fun driving around to find movie locations. Especially fun was seeing the actual "Music Box" steps used by Laurel and Hardy and the original locations of silent movie studios. Great fun for the movie lover -- easy to use and just plain fun to read!
