Coffee Battle: Cappuccino Or Latte?

Ranked #7,028 in Food & Cooking, #128,729 overall

The Argument That Can Divide Families: Cappucino Or Latte?

As a former cafe / restaurant owner, I'm better placed than most to know just how important the question of:

"Cappuccino or Latte - which is better?"

is to coffee aficianodos. You see, we aren't just coffee drinkers, we are coffee connoisseurs, Knights (& Damsels) of the Roasted Bean, Worshipers at the Church of the Caffeine Brew - and let's face it, addicts!

We can't function in the morning unless we have received a bam-bam straight-into-the-bloodstream hit of java and - leaving the limp-wrist soy hybrids, the macchiatos and other exotic flavors to the trendies and the emos - in most cases, the choice for early morning kick-start juice is clear:

Either you get a Cappuccino or a Latte.

The time for being polite has passed. There will be no fence-sitters here. The namby-pamby "I don't mind either"s will be terminated, painfully, by being force-fed insipid hot chocolate and marshmallows. God dammit, this is more serious than The Gunfight At The O.K. Corral.

I want to know, the world needs to know:

Cappuccino -v- Latte

Latte -v- Cappuccino

Just where the hell do you stand?

Todd Rundgren Needs An Espresso

maybe a cappuccino or a cafe latte

Talk about sitting on the fence! Todd Rundgren is on tour around the world and needs some coffee - seems like he and his entourage don't particularly care how they get it:

"Let's go get a hot espresso
Or maybe a cappuccino
Say get me a cafe latte
Make it with lots of choca-latt-ay"

Get with the program Todd, latte doesn't have chocolate! Still, the music does puts me in that need-a-coffee mood.

N.B.: This fantastic fan-made LEGO music video was created and directed by the very clever jrdmovimkr for the track Espresso off Todd's 1995 album, The Individualist.

The First Cappuccino

Minimalist Cappucino

"Espresso machines of the type used to make cappuccino were introduced at the beginning of the 20th century when Luigi Bezzera of Milan filed the first patent in 1901.

Cappuccino was developed in Italy by the early 1900s and grew in popularity as the large espresso machines in cafés and restaurants were improved during and after World War II - specifically with the introduction of the modern, high-pressure espresso machine by Italian company Gaggia in 1948.

The beverage had developed into its current form by the 1950s."

The First Cafe Latte

Latte Art

"Caffe Mediterraneum, a landmark cafè in Berkeley, California, claims to be the birthplace of the caffè latte, crediting its birth to one of the café's owners, Lino Meiorin in the late 1950's.

According to a sign that is proudly displayed in the café, Lino was the first Italian-trained barista in the San Francisco Bay Area and his Italian-style cappuccinos were apparently too strong for the customers. In response to his customers, he decided to add a larger, milkier cappuccino to the menu and he called this drink the caffè latte."

A Latte Joke

it works with cappuccinos, too!

Latte Bunny Rabbit DesignA man goes to the doctor and says:
"Doctor, what should I do? Every time I come home from work, I see some strange man - a different guy every time - in bed with my wife.
Then when I start yelling at her, she tells me to calm down, gets the guy to give me $10 and sends me round the corner to Starbucks to buy a latte - or two!
This has been happening every day, 5 days a week for the last four months!"

The Doctor ponders the situation seriously and then says:
"So how can I help you?"

The man replies:
"I just want to know - I've heard addictions can ruin a marriage - am I having too many lattes?"

Great fun - I did soo badly on the quiz, and as a 10 a day (coffees, that is) person I should be ashamed. Seriously - American coffee drinkers only average one cup a day? How do they survive?

One Woman's Search For "The Perfect Cappuccino"

a must-see documentary for coffee geeks

Filmmaker Amy Ferraris is obsessed. Having first discovered the cappuccino on a trip to Italy in the early 90's, she comes back to American plagued by one seemingly unanswerable question:

"In the country that put a man on the moon, why is it so hard to find a decent cappuccino?"

The result was several years of hard work, an education about Corporate America the drinking of a whole lotta cappuccinos - consumed only for research purposes, of course!

N.B.: Here is a link to Amy's occasionally updated blog, Cappuccino Review.

"It is neither a formal tutorial nor a detail scientific look at making great cappuccino - it is a wonderful personal and cultural journey about coffee...with funny bits sprinkled all over the movie"
Amazon customer SKL

"...we see the damning juxtaposition between Italy's cafe culture and our own. We bounce back and forth between shots of thick, dense cappuccinos served in pristine white ceramics and soapy, spit bubble hogwash that's been dumped into recycled paper to-go cups.
The cause of the deficiency - Americans' toleration of the corporate juggernaut, Starbucks."

Latte Art Printing Machine

putting the "Art" in Latte Art!

It would be a fair call to say that the Latte Art printing machine isn't "Art" at all, merely a service presentation aid but I consider the "Art" to be in its conception - it's really clever.

Accepting that the printing machine in the video is just a prototype and that, at present, your latte would be stone cold when you received it, I'm sure that subsequent models would become considerably faster and those versions could be game-changers in the coffee house latte wars.

It should be noted that the resultant "latte" isn't a latte at all, because the printing machine uses a (what looks like) caramel flavoring or coloring as "ink" but that might just be splitting hairs.

"I am rather impressed being a coffee loving geek" Youtube member hybridcatthing

"I can't say that it will satisfy the general demographic of coffee drinkers, but your talent has definitely spun the market in a new direction" Youtube member IAmTolsonAiles

"Too bad the printer prints the logo of the Dark Lord on the latte." Youtube member cjmooref
