Delicious Shade Grown Organic Coffee and Coffee Facts!

Coffee is what keeps us going. If many of us didn't have it, we'd be lost! It's the world's most popular beverage, helps us wake up in the morning, and relax on the weekends. Coffee is filled with the stimulant caffeine, which picks us up and makes us more alert, yet sometimes shaky.

Coffee is grown all around the world, but mainly inside of the tropics zone around the equator. Coffee naturally grows under the canopies of the equatorial rainforests in South America, Central America, Africa and Southeast Asia. The limitations of coffee plants growing under shade conditions have resulted in the emergence of sun ripening coffee plants. These plants often bring about bigger crops, but require more pesticides, as well as the deforestation of the rainforest region. Organic shade grown coffee embraces the natural method of coffee growing, while supporting the existence of our lessening rainforests.

Here you can find additional facts on organic coffee, as well as some of the best coffee themed products and of course, organic coffee to choose from on the web!

Why Buy Organic Coffee?

What's the difference between organic and regular coffee?

Organic coffee sounds great, but why should you buy it? Coffee is one of the most heavily treated plants, as well as quite destructive. Unfortunately, it's consumed at a huge rate and the demand for it is enormous. Coffee is grown in one of the most fragile regions of the world, our rainforests. Newer plants have emerged that don't require shade to grow, which sounds like a good thing. Is it really?

The problem with non-shade-grown coffee is that land is being cleared in wildlife and endangered species rich rainforests for the newer varieties of coffee plants. Fair trade farming practices encourage farmers to use more sustainable practices to grow their coffee instead of using the shrinking rainforests that our earth depends on.

Dark roast means more caffeine, right?

Wrong! Often roasting coffee for dark roasts will remove some of the caffeine, so lighter roasts will have more caffeine.

Could We Function as a Society Without Coffee?

Coffee addicts and non coffee drinkers weigh in!

Could the world function without coffee?

It's impossible! I can't imagine the world still turning without coffee as its fuel.

TopStyleTravel says:

My emotional reaction is, no we can't get along without it. It is not only a pick me up but it smells and tastes fabulous.

kiwisoutback says:

No. The world would come grinding to a halt and people would never get out of bed. At least in my home, I KNOW that's the case.

We'd get by. Coffee isn't everything.

Graceonline says:

Of course we could. Caffeine is a drug habit we could kick if we chose. The real question is, do we want to give it up? The smell of fresh-roasted coffee beans when you pop open the canister in the morning, the hum of the grinder, the ritual of filling the pot, adding the fresh-grounds, waiting for the sound of the steam and the scent of the fresh brew. Mmmmm.

spirituality says:

Well - if all the people who are addicted got over it, yes, of course we could function without coffee. People can do a lot of things if they have to.

A Green Idea for your Coffee Maker: Reusable Coffee Filters!

Instead of throwing away the filter, reuse it!

Reusing your coffee filter is a great way to get a richer, thicker, more robust and flavorful cup of coffee. You'll also be doing a good thing by not using the disposable alternative coffee filters! To take it an extra step further, save your coffee grinds for your garden. Just dump the reusable filter into a container and save them up for your garden! Caution: they get moldy, so dump them often, or allow them to dry out.

What's up with shade grown coffee?

You may have heard about shade grown coffee, but why is it so important? Shade grown coffee is the natural way coffee trees grow. New "hybrid" trees have been developed that grow under harsher conditions of direct sunlight. Unfortunately, this means rainforests are being demolished for the hybrids.

Yes I had used organic coffee for a time. The facts in this lens about non organic coffee makes me think I should return to it. I do have a reusable coffee filter, coffee tastes so much better than in bleached filters. At the least, use non bleached filters and enjoy the flavor more.

Yes, I go out of my way to buy organic coffee, if need be. It's more difficult to find Fair Trade-certified coffee, but I ask for it everywhere I buy or consume coffee. More and more coffee houses are willing to offer it. Thank you for building this important lens and for educating us all about the reasons to buy organic coffee.
