Taking away the mystery...
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (often referred to as CBT) is a technique used to help stop "stinkin' thinkin'". Much of the time we think and do as we are guided from past experiences and sometimes past experiences can be confusing or misleading. Low self esteem can be a result of mixed signals from parents or friends. Unreasonable fears such as fear of heights or fear of trains might come from triggers in the past that our conscious mind doesn't even remember.Replace the word "cognitive" with "thinking" and you have Thinking Behavioral Therapy". It's a way to get you thinking more logically and as a result behaving more rationally.
What is bothering you? Why is it bothering you. How is it affecting you? What things (even the smallest) could you do to change. What would be the positive outcome? Take the time to actually sit and write out these questions and then answer them in the simplest way possible. Don't dwell on the many "sub-answers" or alternate theories. Don't let your stinkin' thinkin' get in the way.
It doesn't work if you are not motivated. Many times drugs will be prescribed during or after the therapy. As always a physician should always be consulted.
