Spotlight On Collecting Lincoln Cents, Buffalo and Jefferson Nickels
One of the best places to start when beginning a coin collection is to collect pennies, nickels and dimes. First, because they are less expensive than the higher denominations and relatively more plentiful. Many new collectors start by trying to put all the pennies they own into date order - oldest to those just issued. I used to do this all the time with my own coins that I just saved as a youngster.
Most of the coins you save from your pocket change is off little value from a coin collection point of view, but over the years I have found some interesting coins I've received from purchases. There's the odd foreign coin masquarading as a penny or dime, or a one of the much rarer silver coins. When I was a child I would easily find coins from the early part of the 20th century - Lincoln pennies from the 1910s-20s and odd looking nickels with an Indian Head.
Below are some guides to help make heads or tails for those trying to put together a coin collection of Lincoln cents and Buffalo and Jefferson nickels. Both pennies and nickels are areas that even advanced collectors study and is one of the best first steps in coin collecting.
