I Hunt for Copper for Fun
I have been collecting pennies for years. I have watched people online talking about collecting copper to hedge against the American monetary system. I have seen people horde copper pennies because they think it is going to sky rocket in price.
Personally I like to collect copper pennies because I like to see what I can find. The last time I ran the numbers, I was finding about 22% copper in each roll I looked through.

I am waiting for some cash to come through so I can go buy more penny rolls. I am thinking about buying about $10 worth. I figure they will keep me busy for the next month.
Question from smithlights
January 10th, 2012
Smithlights asked, "...can you please explain the difference between coppers and the other things you're looking for? What's so special about 1982s?"I am looking for pennies made out of 95% copper. In 1982 the US mint changed the content of the metal in pennies from 95% copper to 95% zinc. That means not all of the 1982s are copper. I save these so I can go through them later and determine whether they are copper or zinc. The easiest way to do that is with a digital scale. Zinc is lighter than copper.
Anything before 1982 is copper. I find it fun to go through the rolls to see how much copper I can find. It is much more fun than trying to find Silver coins in rolls of dimes and Quarters. I am much more successful. Silver is much more scarce. I can usually get 8 to 12 coppers out of a 50 count roll of pennies. Excitement. Copper pennies are worth more than twice their face value. I like making double my money. :)
Thanks for the question.

- I keep an eye out for copper pennies too but for a different reason. I collect elongated pennies. So I always hold back any copper pennies I find for use in making the smashed pennies.

- I did that for a while. I still like to collect elongated pennies when I go somewhere interesting. All these smashed pennies are just making my pennies more valuable right?

- Very interesting. Maybe I missed it because I didn't watch the videos (Netflix is on!), but can you please explain the difference between coppers and the other things you're looking for? What's so special about 1982s? I know what wheat pennies are- for years my cousin called them hay pennies because she didn't know the difference between wheat and hay. City kid. Thanks!
