State Quarters and Presidential Dollars

The Presidential Dollar Coin series, beginning in 2007, is a new type of regular, circulating dollar, issued by the U.S. Mint. To honor our nation's presidents, the U.S. is issuing $1 circulating coins displaying their images. "E Pluribus Unum," "In God We Trust," and the mint mark are richly detailed is Each coin has a striking rendition of the statue of Liberty. Four Presidential dollar coins will be released every year through at least 2016.

These dollar coins are made on the same planchets as the Sacagawea Golden Dollars, with one important difference - they have edge lettering! On February 15, 2007, The George Washington coin, the first in the series, was issued. The second coin, for President John Adams, was released on May 17, 2007.

The Congressional legislation that mandates the Presidential Dollar series the Mint to place the "name and likeness" of a U.S. President on the obverse of the coin, plus the dates he served in office, and his numerical place in the line. The reverse bears a "dramatic representation of Liberty" (in the form of the Statue of Liberty) that extends to the rim of the coin, but without giving the appearance of a two-headed coin.

Aside from the Presidential Coin Series, there is the State Quarters Program, detailing all 50 U.S. states. Of importance, The 50 State Quarters Program runs for ten years from 1999 to 2008. The individual designs for each state are on the reverse side of the coin. Five coins are distributed each year at about ten week intervals. Quarters are minted in both Denver and Philadelphia, on a not quite 50-50 basis.
