Coin Books: Know the Coin Before You Buy It

Ranked #13,686 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #201,875 overall

Coin Books: More Than Just Reference Material

Read the Book Before You Buy the Coin.
It's an axiom in the world of Coins. The more knowledge you have about a coin before you try to purchase it the better your chances of making a good decision. Finding out what it is that adds value to a coin (or which drives a coin down in value) can really help you determine more than just the price you should pay or ask, it can help you decide whether the coin you are looking at is really one that you want to put into your collection or you should use your monetary resources elsewhere.

Acquiring knowledge in the field is done two ways. The first way is experience. Physically examining a coin and others like is an invaluable source of knowledge. The second way to acquire knowledge is by using reference materials -- websites, magazines and books!

What Makes a Coin Book REALLY Good?

The First Key: Accurate, Comprehensive Information.

The Quality of the Information is the reason you buy the book. Look for books written by recognized authorities in the field, or which are endorsed as excellent resources by those people.
What kind of information should a collector look for?
1. Good statistical information on the coin. How many coins were produced?
2. What are the "key dates" for a given design?
3. What are the characteristics which cause a coin to be graded higher (or lower)?
4. What are the areas to look at to make sure a coin is authentic?

The Secret History of the First U.S. Mint

Frank H. Stewart is both the hero and the villain in this remarkable tale ripped from the headlines of early 20th-century Philadelphia. He was a high-school dropout who wrote the definitive history of our nation's first coin factory. He was no art connoisseur, and yet he commissioned unforgettable paintings of the first U.S. Mint, by famous artists. A poor boy made good, Stewart bought the old Mint, labored to preserve it, and failed in the most dramatic way possible. Could his later acts of commemoration redeem his failures in preservation? The Secret History of the First U.S. Mint tells, for the first time, the full story of the paradoxical Frank H. Stewart and his self-appointed life's mission to celebrate an irreplaceable slice of our nation's heritage.

What Makes a Coin Book REALLY Good?

The Second Key: Relevant Information

It doesn't really matter how accurate the information an author presents is, it also needs to be relevant to the needs of the reader! If you are a beginner, a book about the intricacies of the die varieties of the Morgan Dollar may not be the most useful for you right now. But if you have an interest in the field it may be exactly what you are looking for. Ask yourself, "How specialized do I want my collection to be?" Then buy books which advance you toward your goal.

What Makes a Coin Book REALLY Good?

The Third Key: Illustrations

Especially when discussing subjects like a coin's condition, no amount of words can replace the clarity and insight provided by a clear photograph or drawing. Look through the book before you buy it. If that's not possible, read the reviews on Amazon. Another good strategy is to ask about the book on the Forums you can find on the Internet. You'll almost always get good advice about the book there from people who actually use the books, not just people who review books for websites. I tend to steer clear of books which have only black and white photos or drawings.
