Matthew 2:1-12 Visit of the Magi

In the following passages from Matthew, you will see the mentions of the wise men and the gifts.
Mat 2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
Mat 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
Mat 2:11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
Mat 2:12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
The Coin Of The Magi

As a collector of ancient coins, this coin intrigues me.
Magi is a term, used since at least the 4th century BC, for someone with the ability to read the stars, and manipulate the fate that the stars foretold. This is obvious from Mat 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
Matthew describes them as wise men from the east. It is widely accepted that King Azes II sent three kings seeking proof of the birth and to deliver gifts for the King of Kings. The coin they used to buy the gifts would have been the solid silver drachm which was minted 35 B.C. to 5 A.D. and is now known as the "Magi Coin".
This 2,000 year old coin depicts Azes II on horseback on the obverse, and has a figure of Zeus standing left with eagle and scepter on the reverse.
14th century Armenian tradition identifies these Magi as Balthasar, King of Arabia; Melchior, King of Persia; and Gasper (or Gaspar / Caspar), King of India. Gaspar is thought to be the eldest of the kings and generally painted kneeling before Jesus in several renderings of "The Adoration of the Magi".
Can you imagine holding a coin that's 2,000 years old?

What Became Of the Magi?

As you can imagine there are many stories of what became of the Magi after they left Bethlehem and headed back east.
Marco Polo claimed that he was shown the three tombs of the Magi at Saveh south of Tehran in the 1270s:
"In Persia is the city of Saba, from which the Three Magi set out and in this city they are buried, in three very large and beautiful monuments, side by side. And above them there is a square building, beautifully kept. The bodies are still entire, with hair and beard remaining."
Another has their remains found by Saint Helena and brought to Constantinople, and eventually making their way to Germany. The photo (Wikipedia commons) shows the Shrine of the Three Kings at Cologne Cathedral.

“Did you know, in some stories, the two thieves crucified with Jesus stole the gold the Magi brought?”

- This lens caught my eye as I just finished a meditation trilogy called the gifts of the Magi. In the story there is a deep meaning to each of the gifts. Gold symbolized the Christ consciousness, frankincense the ability to see the spirit within everyone, and myrrh, was the dissolving of the ego mind...yes I would love to see the coins! :)
