Coins of the New Zealand Mint

The New Zealand Mint produces high quality coins for New Zealand and many smaller countries. Some smaller nations issue commemorative coins for income, but are too small to have their own mints. Large mints like the New Zealand Mint produce these commemorative coins and market them.
In addition to coins for New Zealand, the New Zealand Mint issues coins for Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, the Pitcarn Islands, and Tuvalu. Strangely, the New Zealand Mint has minted coins for France and the United States.

EXCITING NEWS

The 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS fine silver set was scheduled for an October release. It should be out any tome, since we are now in November! The photographs are on the New Zealand Mint's page, and they are stunning. These coins are being minted for Niue, and have a denomination of $2 each. They are sold as a boxed set with very limited mintage.

We are adding this to the lens. Please be patient if other coins with similar names come up before the set gets to the sellers.

Perhaps the best 2010 set is the five fine silver coin set of Ancient Reptiles of New Zealand. The images are of the Allosaurus, the Anhanguera, the Mauisaurus, the Moanasaurus, and the Titanosaurus. This is an incredible set of proof coins.
The 2010 Maui's Dolphin coin is available in proof and as a brilliant uncirculated coin.
The 2009 New Zealand Eagle and the Southern Right Whale are older examples of quality New Zealand coinage.

New Zealand Kiwi

The New Zealand has begun another kiwi series of silver and gold coins. The kiwi is such a favorite the New Zealand has little recourse except to keep the kiwi. And it does make an attractive coin.

New Zealand Quality

The New Zealand Mint has joined the Royal Canadian Mint in minting silver coins at a 0.9999 purity. Many fine silver coins are 0.999 purity, and the extra nine adds little silver, but there are people who look for it. The mint also produces gold coins to a 0.9999 purity. However, not all of its issues have the extra nine.

The New Zealand Mint issues many colorized coins. This adds something to the coins.

The cases containing the coins are often imaginative. There was a movie clapperboard used for the Sherlock Holmes coin set, and a tire for the motorcycle set.

Many of the coins, especially those for the smaller countries, are low mintage issue proof coins.

Some issues are silver coins gilded with gold.

The New Zealand Mint is a major producer of collectible coins.

How about a thumbs up!

Fiji Islands

The 2010 gilded Taku, or hawksbill turtle, proof-like silver coin is astounding. The mintage on this rare gem is a very low 5,000.

The New Zealand has minted other coins for the Fiji Islands.

Extraordinary Coins

The 2010 Fiji Islands four submarine silver set consists of four submarines, the Russian Typhoon, the British Vanguard, the United States Ohio, and the French Triomphant. These one Troy ounce fine silver coins are struck in proof. The coins are beautifully colorized, and housed in a submarine shaped case. These extraordinary sets have a limited release of 15,000.

Niue

While New Zealand does not mint all of Niue's coins, it does mint a significant number of the issues. The 2010 proof white swans forming a heart, and the 2009 proof-like black swans forming a heart, on fine silver coins titled "Love Is Precious" are remarkable. The ongoing gilded Lunar series can be argued to be the most beautiful, and the distinctive oriental cases can only add to that argument.

Pitcairn Islands

The 2009 H.M.A.V. Bounty second series is a fantastic series. The coins were minted in gold, silver, and silver gilded with gold. Perhaps the 2008 coins depicting the ship are the most attractive.

SIBERIAN TIGER

The Siberian Tiger is about to sell out at the New Zealand Mint, and that could make them harder to find. Many coins increase in value once the mint sells out. This is a wonderful coin featuring a Siberian Tiger walking through a winter wonderland.

1 Troy ounce 0.999 fine silver
Mintage: 20,000
Denomination: $2
Year 2010
Issued for the Pitcairn Islands

Please note that other Siberian tiger coins may appear. The New Zealand Mint issue is probably the best.

Most Outstanding Coin

The two tone gold flowers on a rectangular fine silver coin minted in 2009 for Niue is hard to beat. This is a Feng Shui Painting coin titled "Blossoming Peonies." This coin was produced with a proof-like finish. Mintage was 16,888.

Your Turn to Express Yourself!

Do you like the fact that the New Zealand Mint makes popular themed coins like Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang, Alice in Wonderland, and Sherlock Holmes?

Yes

Of course I like them, nothing should be taken so seriously that you can't have some fun with it every now and then.

goo2eyes says:

yes, if they sell, why not?

whoisbid says:

I think that New Zealand Mint is very open minded

kiwinana71 says:

I have no idea about that, but you sure know your coins

sorana says:

I think it's a great idea.

No, themes should always be serious.

The United States

In 2010, the New Zealand Mint coined two versions of a single issue for the United States. The "Colt M 16" is available in copper/zinc and fine silver. The silver coin is colorized, and produced with a proof-like finish. The M 16 rifle is shown along with the American flag. The reverse depicts an eagle. The reverse has the words One Dollar and America 2010. The New Zealand is advertising these as United States coins. Also are the words Mesa Grande.
The case is designed to look like a bullet casing.
In addition, the New Zealand has a three coin set titled "Flags of America."
These are copper zinc coins of various flags that have flown over the United States. The Grand Union Flag of 1775 features the red and white stripes, but has a Union Jack where the stars now appear. The others are the Betsy Ross flag of 1777 and the Fifty Star Flag of 1960.

Tuvalu

The 2010 proof fine silver coin titled "First Official Horse Race" has a mintage of only 5,000. The coin is colorized. Many of Tuvalu's coins are minted by the Perth Mint of Australia. This one is an exception.
