Stephen Colbert: sharp-witted actor/comedian, presidential candidate

Why do I love Stephen Colbert ("coal-bear")?  He is smart AND funny, and presents an awesomely sharp portrayal of an ultra-conservative pundit on his show, The Colbert Report.  From his Better Know A... series of educational features, to his Threatdown and The Word, his eponyous alter-ego provides a welcome diversion from the "real" news shows. Thank you, Mr. Colbert!

And thank you, Colbert fans, for checking out my little applause page for Stephen.  While this is not meant to be an all-inclusive Colbert fan site, I will highlight my favorite Colbert stuff, especially the lesser-known clips and trivia.  Hope you enjoy it!

It's always fun to see Stephen on the other side of the interviewer's desk. Even when he's just being himself, he still shows his talent for sharp timing and quick wit! Very enjoyable to watch.

Have you tried the Colbert-flavored ice cream?

by Me

Ben & Jerry's ice cream recently released a brand-new flavor, called "Stephen Colbert's Americone Dream." The frozen confection is vanilla ice cream, with fudge-covered waffle cone bits, and a caramel swirl. I'll leave it up to you to infer the possible symbolism of those ingredients, but I can tell you it's a delicious combination!

From the Ben & Jerry's site: Ben & Jerry's new flavor is a decadent melting pot of vanilla ice cream with fudge-covered waffle cone pieces and a caramel swirl. It's the sweet taste of liberty in your mouth. Colbert believes AmeriCone Dream can make a difference. "I'm not afraid to say it. Dessert has a well-known liberal agenda. What I hope to do with this ice cream is bring some balance back to the freezer case."

Stephen Colbert is donating his proceeds from the sale of AmeriCone Dream to charity through The Stephen Colbert AmeriCone Dream Fund. The Fund will support charities of concern to Stephen such as food and medical assistance for disadvantaged children, helping veterans and their families, and environmental causes. "I will save the world," said Colbert.

Stephen Colbert 101

just the facts

Stephen Tyrone Colbert (;See inogolo:pronunciation of Stephen Colbert. born May 13, 1964) is an American comedian, satirist, actor and writer, known for his ironic style (particularly in his portrayal of uninformed opinion leaders), and for his deadpan comedic delivery.

Colbert originally studied to be an actor, but became interested in improvisational theatre when he met famed Second City director Del Close while attending Northwestern University. He first performed professionally as an understudy for Steve Carell at Second City Chicago; among his troupe mates were comedians Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, with whom he developed the critically-acclaimed sketch comedy series "Exit 57".

Colbert also wrote and performed on the short-lived "Dana Carvey Show" before collaborating with Sedaris and Dinello again on the cult television series Strangers with Candy. He gained considerable attention for his role on the latter as closeted, gay history teacher Chuck Noblet. It was his work as a corr...

The softer side of Stephen Colbert

by hmsweaver

Sesame Street: All-Star Alphabet I actually own this DVD. I got it for my kids before I even knew Stephen Colbert was in it. I love Sesame Street, and the kids really seem to learn and remember stuff from the cute, furry monsters, and bouncy jingles!

Stephen Colbert plays the letter "Z" in this video. He brings to life Z's struggle with always being last, and being overshadowed by the charismatic and popular letter "A." Other celebrities, such as Larry King, Sheryl Crow, and Melissa Ethridge, also appear.

If you have kids, or if you're really interested in some of Colbert's non-Comedy Central work, definitely check this out!

"Truthiness" is...

a real word!

Truthiness is a word that American television comedian Stephen Colbert popularized in 2005 as a satirical term to describe things that a person claims to know intuitively or "from the gut" without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination, or facts. Colbert invented this definition of the word during the pilot episode of his satirical television program The Colbert Report on October 17, 2005, as the subject of a segment called "The Wørd". It was named Word of the Year for 2005 by the American Dialect Society and for 2006 by Merriam-Webster.

The word truthiness has a history in literature and appears in the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) (as a derivation of Category: :wikt - :truthy|truthy) and The Century Dictionary, both of which indicate it as rare or dialectal, and to be defined more straightforwardly as "truthfulness, faithfulness". The prior existence of the word was brought to public attention by linguist and OED consultant Benjamin Zimmer.

By using the term as part of his routine, Colbert sought to satirize the use of appeal to emotion and the "gut feeling" as a rhetorical device in contemporary socio-political discourse. He particularly applied it to U.S. President George W. Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court and the decision to invade Iraq in 2003. Colbert later ascribed truthiness to other institutions and organizations, such as Wikipedia. The Colbert Report / Comedy Central recording of The WØRD "Wikiality", Comedy Central, July 31, 2006.

Did you know that Stephen Colbert wrote an article for Wired?

You can read the whole article here. It's titled, "Be an expert on anything," by Stephen Colbert. It's the kind of smart advice that you know is satire, but still sounds pretty good. Now, go become an expert on something. Make up a secret subject so nobody can challenge your expertise.
