Natural Cold Remedies

As simple and commen the cold is, it's amazing that a cure has never been found for it. The best we can really do is use prevention to hopefully avoid catching a cold and if you have got one, to ease the symtoms. Below you will find some common and not so common remedies to help relieve your sysmtoms.

Some Basic Tactics

Here are some things you can do to make yourself feel better:

When you blow your nose, hold one nostril closed and blow gently out of the other then alternate. Don't blow really hard, take it easy.

Rest! you must let your body defend itself, if you are worn down physically or mentally your robbing your bodies defence mechanisms.

If you drink hot liquids it will help sooth inflamed membranes in your nose and throat.

If you have a sore throat gargle. Use some salt in warm water a fwew times a day. For a tickly feeling in your throat, try gargling with some tea to tighten the membranes.

A steamy shower will help loosen your nasal passages.

Try Zinc

Studies have shown that Zinc lozenges have helped reduce the symtoms of the cold if taken within 24 hours of the start of symtoms. It's been recommended to take one lozenge every two to four hours during the day not to exceed a maximum of six to twelve a day.

Remember, Zinc lozenges are not for the prevention of colds, just to help relieve symptoms after you have caught one. Some side effects are nausea and unpleasant taste in your mouth.

Treating Young children

First I want to say do not give Honey to a child under one year old because of the risk of botulism.

Teach them to wash there hands.

Make sure they drink more fluids, especially high in vitamin C. If they can't or will not drink more, make some popsicles from juice, they may take that over the drink.

Put a Dehumidifier in their bedroom while they sleep to help relieve a stuffy nose.

More Tips

Pineapple juice may be better suited than citrus being its less acidic on the stomach and hs more vitamin C. You can dilute the juice with water and drink three or four times a day.

Keep your feet warm while sick. When your body temperature is lower, you have an increased risk to viruses. Keeping the body temperature up helps destroy the viruses. Soaking your feet in warm water will warm you up.

Some consider Ginger tea to be the best home remedy for colds. It contains many antiviral compounds. Add a teaspoon of grated ginger to one cup hot water and let steep for about ten minutes. Drink three times a day.
