What You Should Do to Get Rid of Cold Sores

Cold sores can hinder your everyday activities by seven to 14 days. Herpes simplex virus is what causes of cold sores. Cold sores are sometimes mistakenly labeled as canker sores. Canker sores are small and white bacteria that thrive in the mouth while cold sores are blisters that are red in color and usually appear around or on the mouth.

These viruses lie dormant inside the nerve cells and can only cause cold sores when triggered by anxiety, stress, excessive sun exposure, or cold.

You can cure cold sores by first, recognizing if it is really a cold sores or just simple canker sores. Second, you must identify how you get the virus.

But as the cliché goes, prevention is always better than cure.

Because cold sores are caused by virus, the very basic thing to do is to prevent the virus from spreading. You can help in containing the virus whether you are the victim or a possible victim. Just follow these few tips:

Cold Sore Tips

1. Avoid contact with cold sores victims. If you are the victim of this disease, keep the cold sores to yourself. Prevent its spread through lessening the extent of your physical contact with other people. This disease is extremely contagious. If you have no cold sores, you must avoid sharing personal belongings like towels or cups with people having cold sores. Kissing should also be prevented. You should also wash both of your hands very often especially after touching cold sores victims and take your hands away from your genitals or eyes if you touched a cold sores victim.
2. Wear sun screen. Put sunscreen on your lips so you may avoid sun-induced cold sores. Remember that exposure to sun is one of the factors that triggers the cold sore virus. Do not just use any sunscreen. Choose one with SPF 15 or higher.
3. Consult your doctor regularly. If you feel you're having cold sores, see your physician immediately. It would be better if you have a regular check up so you will be alerted if you are infected with cold sores virus.
4. Prepare anesthetics. If you are already a victim of cold sores, you should apply an anesthetic. You can buy this product over the counter. Choose an anesthetic ointment that contains benzocaine. This substance helps to numb the pain caused by cold sores at least, temporarily.
5. Lessen salty or acidic food intake. Salty food or acidic food can irritate the cold sore virus. You must avoid eating junk food or citrus fruits. Aside from irritation, these foods can add to the pain usually associated with cold sores.
6. Ready your painkillers. Cold sores are painful. You can use over-the-counter painkillers like aspirin, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen to at least reduce the pain cause by cold sores.
7. Have petroleum-based products. You can cover up cold sores using products that are petroleum-based. These are good as protectors against the spread of the cold sores virus. If you are a victim of cold sores, you must cover your lips with petroleum-based products to avoid spreading the virus. If you are not a victim, you should also put on this product to protect yourself from being infected with the virus.

About Cold Sore

Herpes simplex is a viral disease caused by Herpes simplex viruses; both herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) cause herpes simplex. Infection with the herpes virus is categorized into one of several distinct disorders based on the site of infection. Oral herpes, the visible symptoms of which are colloquially called cold sores, infects the face and mouth. Oral herpes is the most common form of infection. Infection of the genitals, commonly known as herpes, is the second most common form of herpes. Other disorders such as herpetic whitlow, herpes gladiatorum, ocular herpes (keratitis), cerebral herpes infection encephalitis, Mollaret's meningitis, neonatal herpes, and possibly Bell's palsy are all caused by herpes simplex viruses.

Herpes viruses cycle between periods of active disease?presenting as blisters containing infectious virus particles?that last 2?21 days, followed by a remission period, during which the sores disappear. Genital herpes, however, is often asymptomatic, though viral shedding may still occur. After initial infection, the viruses move to sensory nerves, where they reside as life-long, latent viruses. Causes of recurrence are uncertain, though some potential triggers have been identified. Over time episodes of active disease reduce in frequency.

Herpes simplex is most easily transmitted by direct contact with a lesion or the body fluid of an infected individual. Transmission may also occur through skin-to-skin contact during periods of asymptomatic shedding. Barrier protection methods are the most reliable, but not failsafe, method of preventing transmission of herpes. Oral herpes is easily diagnosed if the patient presents with visible sores or ulcers. Early stages of orofacial herpes and genital herpes are harder to diagnose; laboratory testing is usually required. Prevalence of HSV infections varies throughout the world. Poor hygiene, overcrowding, lower socioeconomic status, and birth in an undeveloped country have been identified as risk factors associated with increased HSV-1 childhood infection. Additional studies have identified other risk factors for both types of HSV.

There is currently no cure for herpes; no vaccine is currently available to prevent or eliminate herpes. However, treatments are available to reduce viral reproduction and shedding, prevent the virus from entering the skin, and alleviate the severity of symptomatic episodes.
