Winter Gardening with a Cold Frame
A cold frame is a simple "green living" structure that can be used to extend the growing season of your backyard garden or even grow some crops through much of the winter. You can purchase ready made cold frames, but with a little work, the cold frame can be built fairly easily and in some cases can double as a row cover to control pests, as long as it is properly ventilated and doesn't get too hot for your crops.
The cold frame is one of several DIY backyard gardening projects I suggest people to try out. After checking out the cold frame info below, you may enjoy taking a look at these other garden projects which I hope will help make growing your own food a more productive experience.

Cold Frame Box
In addition to a cold frame built with 2x4's and pvc pipe as a sort of row cover, cold frames can also be built in a box format, with used windows. The frame should be built to fit the size of the window you scrounge up. You may want to attach the window sash to the box with hinges. The box can be left above ground or buried underground for added insulation. The window should be angled to catch the sun, and the cold frame is oriented in a southern direction for maximum light. You may wish to heat the cold frame with a light bulb at night and cover it with some sort of insulating material like blankets to help it maintain a warmer temperature. During warm days in early fall or late winter, you will likely need to crack the cold frame slightly so that it doesn't become a solar oven. A hot bed can be built in a cold frame using composting manure, which with it's natural decomposition process creates warmth for the plants.
