Cold and Flu Season - What Can You Do?
It's that time of year again where either your children are coming home with a cold or the flu or coworkers are passing it around. There are many medications out there of course to treat the flu or a cold - but what else can you do, you might ask?
In Asian medicine, treating colds or flu can be a matter of certain techniques that help the body's energy spots or meridians. Tapping on parts of the body can help clear or activate areas that assist you in your healing process or health.
Dahn Yoga, a form of yoga that is Korean based and that integrates numerous therapies into its practice, uses such techniques. See the video below for a simple exercise that will help you with a cold or the flu.

Dahn Yoga breathing techniques can help you get over a cold
1. To begin, raise your left arm about 45 degrees away from your body. With the right hand, tap firmly at a point just beneath the left collarbone. Slowly breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth slowly.
2. Visualize the cold viruses and stagnant energy being expelled from your body.
3. Now switch to the other side, thumping the right side of your chest with your left hand. If you have a cough, go easy on yourself, since this exercise may temporarily make the hacking worse.
4. Lie back on your bed with your feet and arms splayed slightly. Perform the same breathing technique as before, imagining light energy coming in with each breath, and dark, negative energy leaving with the expelled air.
5. For optimal relief, place a hot pad or hot water bottle on your belly or lower abdomen.
Dahn Yoga's self healing techniques can minimize cold symptoms
Getting sick is no fun, and with cold season fast approaching, it is important to try to keep your body's energy balanced in order to reduce the severity of cold and flu symptoms. But how are you supposed to do this? With Dahn Yoga's self healing techniques, of course!
That is not to say that you can use the secrets of self healing to cure yourself when you are sick, but it does mean that yoga-based therapies can reduce the severity of your symptoms and get you back on your feet sooner.
Colds are hard to avoid. More than 62 million cases of the common cold occur each year, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, making it vital to keep yourself healthy and robust in case you catch the bug.
If you do, try this breathing exercise to reduce congestion and cough:
1. Lie on your bed with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms spread slightly away from your body.
2. Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of eight, hold it for a count of two and exhale through your mouth for a count of 10.
3. Imagine the stagnant energy leaving your body. If you can, place a hot pack on your stomach to keep your abdomen warmer than your head.
