Before we discuss any cold sore treatment we need to get an understanding exactly what are cold sores. Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are produced by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1).

They usually form as a red swollen bump near the mouth or nose. Often the bump stings, itches, or tingles and sometimes may even burn as it develops into blisters. These blisters will eventually break and may ooze a clear or whitish fluid.

Once a person is infected they usually carry the virus throughout their life and many have recurrence of cold sores every year. Although someone may carry the virus they may never have an outbreak. Many things can trigger a cold sore including physical or emotional stress, hormonal changes, illnesses, weather changes, or injury to the lips or skin.

Prescription Treatments

• Denavir - An antiviral medication, has been proven effective in treating cold sores in healthy adults.

Non Prescription Treatments

• Abreva - Shortens healing time - The only cold sore treatment that contains the unique medicine 10% Docosanol. This medicine helps prevent the cold sore virus from penetrating healthy skin cells.



• Labello or Orabase - provides moisturization as well as mechanical barrier to guard the skin and lips.

Self Care Tips for Treatment

• Vaseline petroleum jelly can be used to prevent cracking and drying.

Natural Treatment

I never did go to the doctor for a prescription because I didn't feel that my cold sore outbreaks were bad enough to take the time to go. I found the cold sores to be more embarrassing than anything else.

I always hated the feeling of talking to people with a terrible blister on my face. I felt they were always looking at it and not listening to me.
