Coleman BlackCat Catalytic Heater
Sometimes the camping season just isn't long enough. If this is the case for you, and you would like to camp through the chilly seasons, you will appreciate some form of portable heat. A Coleman catalytic propane heater is a safe and effective tent heater to help you extend your enjoyment of the great outdoors.
A catalytic heater is flameless, so you don't have to worry about setting your tent on fire. The catalytic process combines propane and oxygen with a platinum catalyst. You do need to ignite the propane initially to start the process, but then the ongoing heat is generated by a chemical reaction between the propane, oxygen, and platinum. Byproducts are mainly carbon dioxide and water vapor.
Sometimes you need more heat than other times, and there's no sense in wasting fuel if you don't need full heat. The Coleman BlackCat catalytic heater lets you adjust the heat output to high or low, depending on how much you need. Using the low setting can extend the life of your propane canister and still keep you cozy in your tent.
The BlackCat heater puts out 3,000 BTUs on the high setting, with a one-pound propane canister lasting about 7 hours on high heat. It includes the convenience of matchless InstaStart ignition and a comfortable carry handle. It's easy to store, too, just by folding the legs.

Coleman SportCat
Small heater for smaller spaces

For smaller spaces, the Coleman SportCat catalytic heater delivers safe, flameless heat. The 1500-BTU heater will keep you warm for up to 14 hours on a single one-pound propane canister. The InstaStart electric ignition eliminates the need for matches, and a handy built-in handle lets you take the SportCat anywhere with ease.People often complain about the smell when they first use their catalytic heater. It's the same smell you get with any new heating device. The components come with a slight coating of manufacturing residue that needs to be burned off. It's recommended to take the heater outside and burn through a canister of propane to clear the residue before using it in an enclosed space.
And although there is no flame, the mesh heater surface gets hot enough to melt synthetic materials, so keep it away from your tent walls. Also, be aware that the initial ignition causes a small burst of flame to exit the front of the heater until the catalytic reaction begins, so take care to point it away from people and objects.

It can be so warm, in fact, that you'll want to be careful which way you aim it -- don't point it toward the windshield or steering wheel.
The heater is designed to fit right into a cart's cup holder; if it doesn't fit securely in your model, simply use a bungee cord to hold it in place. If you've been frustrated by the emergency shut-off on other brands of heaters, you'll be glad to know the Coleman GolfCat heater will stay lit even jiggling over the rough spots. Catalytic Propane Tent Heater Safety
Lots of people are concerned about carbon monoxide and the safety of using heaters inside an enclosed tent. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission conducted tests with catalytic heaters and determined that carbon monoxide build-up with these heaters is negligible and is not a serious hazard to healthy adults.
However, catalytic heaters do use oxygen, and because the heat is produced through a chemical reaction and not from a burning flame, a catalytic heater can operate in situations with much lower oxygen levels. This can lead to hypoxia, or oxygen deficiency. Also, the lower the oxygen level, the less efficient the catalytic heater is at converting oxygen and propane to carbon dioxide and water. This allows unprocessed propane hydrocarbons to accumulate, exacerbating the risk of hypoxia.
It is easy to avoid any of these risks just by providing adequate ventilation. It doesn't take much. A 3" x 3" opening will allow sufficient oxygen intake in a tent. Most tents already have much more mesh-covered ventilation than that. If you want to add an additional safety factor, don't use the heater while you sleep. Warm up the tent before bedtime, then you'll be warm in your sleeping bag. Not only will you rest assured of your safety, you'll save hours of fuel.
