Why Collect Stamps?

Why should I collect stamps?

Stamp collecting is a unique, exciting, interesting, and historical hobby. I love it especially because of the historical rewards reaped from collecting stamps. I'm a history nut, and it's intoxicating, so to speak, to hold something that traveled around the world a hundred years ago.

In addition to that, stamps can have great monetary value. Stamps, especially rare and exotic ones can bring in a nice sum of money. Just below are some examples of high-selling stamps and stamp collections. There are many stamps that sell for over $800 a piece!

How to Start Stamp Collecting?

Getting started in the hobby of stamp collecting

Getting started in stamp collecting can be as easy as (carefully) cutting them off of your daily mail , then removing the stamps from the paper with this method:
  1. Tear the envelope around the stamp, with a bit of paper around it left
  2. Put the stamp facing down into a pan of warm water
  3. After some time (usually a few minutes), the stamp will sink to the bottom
  4. When all adhesive (sticky stuff) is dislodged, remove the stamp carefully using tweezers or specially-made stamp tongs
  5. Put the stamp between two paper towels and place it between two heavy objects, such as books, to dry overnight
  6. Store your new stamp in a stamp album or on a piece of leaf paper in a binder
  7. Enjoy your new work of art!
