Welcome to The Collectable Corner

Collecting is probably the most popular hobby in the world. The types of things that people collect is practically unlimited as are the reasons why people collect what they do.

My personal favorites are coins, vintage toys, and classic vinyl LPs.

A lot of people get into collecting because they want to bring back memories from their childhood. Others begin collecting certain items as an investment. Collecting gives us a sense of treasure hunting. I really enjoy searching thrift stores, yard sales, and flea markets for great deals on really cool stuff. You can find items, such as vinyl LPs that may be worth quite a bit for just a few dollars or even less.

Of course there are many collectors who aren't concerned with monetary value. One person I know collects everything they can find that has to do with frogs, another person I know collects dragons and fairies. I have always been into the old classic Volkswagens so I have a huge collection of VW models, die-cast cars and memorabilia. My wife enjoys collecting porcelain dolls.

One of the most popular categories of collectables is actually toys! Barbie, vinatge dolls, action figures like GI Joe, diecast cars such as Hotwheels and Matchbox and many other toys are being collected by adults.

Collecting Dolls

Collecting dolls goes back in time quite a ways. There are people who collect nothing except old and antique dolls. Other people will collect any doll that may become of value in the future.

Collecting dolls can be a fun and entertaining hobby. It will allow you to collect beautiful works of art that will actually increase in value, as it gets older.

Just be sure to keep your dolls in their original casing and are kept at a reasonable room temperature.

Cloth Dolls

Some of the very first dolls ever made were actually made of cloth. The first cloth doll I remember as a child is the Raggedy Ann doll.

As time passed, technology took great strides towards advancement. Another great collectible would become the cabbage patch dolls. Those dolls were very popular for a long time and are today a very valuable collectable.

Wax Dolls

Wax dolls are another original collectible all the way back from the 19th century. These dolls were wax sculpted over a paper mache body and were very adorable.

Collectors did shy away from these dolls to begin with due to their frailty. A true collector does not look for the cut and bruises on a doll though. A true wax doll collector looks for the essence of the 19th century.

Plastic Dolls

Everyone should remember the two very popular dolls that took America by storm when they came out. The Barbie doll and the G.I. Joe doll were great improvements in doll making history. These dolls forever branded themselves in American history as being the best dolls on the market. The Barbie doll and the G.I. Joe doll became instantly popular and a big collectible item.

One of the most famous dolls is the Barbie Doll. Barbie first came out in 1959 and right away she became very popular.

One example of the original 1959 Barbie once sold for nearly $26,000! While most Barbie dolls aren't worth that much there are many that are valued in the hundreds of dollars.

Collecting Action Figures

A lot of people don't understand why adults collect action figures. The fact is many find it enjoyable to search out original figurines of their favorite characters. Collectors usually purchase action figures and leave them in the box, in order to preserve its original condition, thus increasing its value. For this reason, most collectors are usually adults as children more often than not feel the need to open and play with the action figures. However, a close friend of mine still has many of the toys, mostly action figures, he received as a child still unopened in their boxes! Talk about a valuable collection!

In order to determine the value of an action figure, many aspects are considered. These include the size, original popularity and condition of the figure. The condition of the figures is based on a rating system running from C-1 through to C-10. Due to the many aspects, prices can vary greatly; some have been known to sell for thousands, while most will be in the range of $10-$100.

I would be very interested to know what others like to collect, so feel free to post a comment below.

The funny postcard is my favorite. You have such great information on things to collect. The plastic doll is a bit scary but you give some good ideas. Take a look at my lens on retro toys when you get a chance: http://www.squidoo.com/retro_toys

Old Grandpa, Thank you for the Lens guestbook entery. Besides books and L.P.'s I have a weakness for early Post Cards. The good ones are getting so expensive now, glad I started collecting them 20 years ago.
