Collectable Swords
There are very few things cooler than a sword. They are the envy of both young and old men. Collecting them is a hobby anyone with the interest can get into. Whether you are interested in a real hand made japanese sword which was built in the same way as the originals, or a simple stainless steel look alike, then you will find what you are interested in here.
Japanese Swords
Judging from my experience as a sword collector, the Japanese swords are the most popular. Especially the Katana. I personally own two Katanas. They are sometimes called samurai swords or Japanese Samurai Swords due to the fact that they were the primary weapon of the Japanese Samurai. They are usually paired with a wakizashi and and tanto. You can buy them separately, or there are some complete sets. This is usually best so that you can have every one of them with the same handle wrapping, because it does vary between manufacturers. When you purchase a Katana, there are a few small inspections you need to do, the first is to make sure there is no rust or dings on the blade. The second is to make sure there is no play in the blade. Hold it by the handle, and give it a gentle shake, and make sure the blade does not wiggle.Below is some good japanese katanas, and complete sets. These are stainless steel, not the carbon steel of the real battle ready swords. One of the best things about the stainless steel swords, is the fact that they do not cost a lot. Quite a few can be purchased for less than twenty dollars. If you are just starting out collecting, or you are on a shoe string budget, you can get some great deals.
Other Swords
The Japanese may be regarded as one of the best sword makers, but they are not the only culture to practice the art. Almost every culture to exist in the last couple of thousand years have made and used swords. They come from China, all over Europe, and even North and South America. Below are some swords from these cultures.
Fantasy Swords
I believe in movies, swords are as popular as guns. It seems every action hero or villian will not just use an off the rack sword, it will be extensively customized, or even a new creation. These swords usually make their way into the collectible market extremely quickly, one of the best examples is the Sword of the Day walker, from the Blade movies.Below are a few swords that are from movies, shows, or anime.
Sword Care and Cleaning.
To keep your sword from rusting, you must take proper care of it. A sword cannot just be washed with water, dried, and stored like a kitchen knife. To keep a sword from rusting requires proper cleaning, and a coat of oil. The must be cleaned regularly, even when stored, because fungus can feed on the moisture in the oil, and you do not need a coat of fungus on your sword. Also, if you think that you can take a little sandpaper and shine up a sword, DON'T! You will damage the finish, and cause even worse problems that you already have. The best thing to do is invest in a good quality sword cleaning kit. It will save you the stress of dealing with little rust spots that will appear on your sword if you do not protect it.
If you wish to display your blade, then there are a good amount of sword stands, and sword wall racks, below is a great eight sword wall display stand.
