Building a Collectibles Reference Library

Why Have a Home Collectibles Reference Library

Building a collectibles reference library is invaluable for sellers and collectors alike. To be a successful collectibles dealer, or even a successful collector, one must know as much as possible about the area and individual items being sold or collected.

Some collectibles are so popular or have been around so long that multiple reference books and price guides have been written on the topic. Others are more elusive. They fall out of favor, or the collection is unique or quirky, or just not well known to the masses. Finding information to identify your find can be exhausting and very time consuming. A good home library of reference books saves time and allows you to research or study up on your area on your own time schedule - and in your jammies with a hot cup of coffee!

Let's explore some of my most used reference books.

Purchasing Collectibles Reference Books

Collectibles reference books don't have to be expensive

As your business or collection grows, it is highly recommended that you develop a good library of collectibles reference books. The books can be purchased from most book stores in your town or online. If the store doesn't carry the book you want, they will order one for you in most cases. One doesn't have to spend an exorbitant amount of money building a library, unless you must have brand new books only. Keep your eye out at auctions, estate sales, yard sales and garage sales, as well as thrift shops, used book stores, and places like GoodWill. You can often pick up a few books for very little money.

Don't be put off by out of date books, as long as they are in good condition. Although the price guides may not apply, the information within is still invaluable. Most good references will tell you the history of the maker, the production dates, dimensions, maker's marks, pattern names, etc. This information will help you identifiy that mystery piece and allow you to write an accurate, authoritative description for your ad. Your buyers will feel more confident in purchasing from someone who is knowledgable.

A Sampling of My Collectibles Reference Library

My Favorite Collectibles Reference Books

Collectibles reference books I use the most

As I mentioned in my previous lens on Birth of a Junk Lady, my interests vary widely. However, there are certain collectible categories that I try to keep in my Alley Cat Lane shops at all times. So, I have acquired numerous books in the areas I love the most and those that help me identify things I am not familiar with. I want to share my favorites with you.

Kovel's New Dictionary of Marks

Kovels' New Dictionary of Marks: Pottery and Porcelain, 1850 to the Present

Amazon Price: $9.43 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

This is one of my most used books written by the husband and wife collectibles experts, Ralph and Terry Kovel. I reach for it over and over. This reference specifically covers pottery and porcelain marks from 1850 to the present, which actually is the mid 1980s as it is copyrighted in 1986. It is well organized and allows the reader to search for marks in several ways. Each mark has a pictorial of the mark, the name of the manufacturer, the city and country of the maker, the type of pottery or porcelain that mark was used on and the date range it was used, as well as the date range the maker was in business. The appendices in the back offer invaluable information including a glossary of frequently seen terms, charts of how to date items made by some of the best companies, company "family trees" of mergers and associations, and a section of fake marks also.

Price Guide to Contemporary Collectibles and Limited Editions

Price Guide to Contemporary Collectibles and Limited Editions (Price Guide to Contemporary Collectibles & Limited Editions)

Amazon Price: $14.00 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

This reference and price guide by Mary L. Seiber has been invaluable. On Ruby Lane, collectibles must be at least 20 years old or noted in a written price guide in order to list the item in my shop. This book has allowed me to list many items that otherwise would not have been eligible. The book copyrighted 2004 lists thousands of items in several categories: Bells, Cottages, Dolls, Figurines, Color Gallery, Ornaments, Plates, Prints, and Steins. Each category is broken down by company with items listed by name along with the year issued, the edition size, retired/open/closed, the issue price and the trend price.

Harmony Kingdom Primordial Soup Extra Large Treasure Jest Box

This is just one of the many Harmony Kingdom figurine boxes I sell that can be found in Price Guide to Contemporary Collectibles and Limited Editions. View Primodial Soup at my shop.

Offical Price Guide to Pottery and Porcelain

Official Price Guide to Pottery and Porcelain: 8th Edition (Official Price Guide to Pottery & Porcelain)

Amazon Price: $4.95 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

Another of my favorites! A must have for anyone interested in pottery companies producing art pottery or dinnerware. The photos are all black and white. Each chapter on a company provides a history of the company, the marks used, and highlights the company's most popular wares. The patterns or lines are broken down into pieces produced, dimensions, identifying details, colors, and price range. Very handy reference.

Vernonware Large Gingham Water Pitcher

Here's one of my pieces of Vernonware Pottery found in the Official Price Guide to Pottery and Porcelain. View the pitcher at my shop.

Beswick References

One of my favorite collectibles companies was Beswick in England. The company was bought out by Royal Doulton in 1969, but Royal Doulton continued to produce Beswick until the line was closed down in 2002. I sell a lot of Beswick figurines so having references for the company is important for me. In each reference book, each item is depicted in a black and white photo and lists the details on model number, name, designer, height, colors, issue dates, description, and price guides for the UK, US and Canada. There are also inserted sections with full color photos that show the various color schemes. Here are two Beswick books I use a good deal.

Another collectible I have fallen in love with are the solid perfume compacts produced by Estee Lauder. This reference by Roselyn Gerson, with gorgeous close-up photographs by her husbnd, Alvin Gerson, provides a comprehensive history of the Estee Lauder company, and the solid perfume compact line specifically. Watch out! Collecting the compacts can become addictive.

Estee Lauder Contented Cat Solid Perfume Compact

One of the many charming and collectible Estee Lauder compacts found in the Estee Lauder Solid Perfume Compact Collection. View the compact at my shop.

Aha, another excuse for me to buy some books. actually most of my collections are stagnating now. My hubby won't brake for yard sales or antique shops.

I do have some collectibles reference books on stuff I don't really collect as well. just because you never know when you can see "the deal" in a garage sale. plus I love beautiful books. I also do have an extensive stamp collecting book collection.

My favorite reference books are not like yours. They wouldn't interest ost people. I can see where it's a lot of work to keep up with the authenticithy and valuation of the collectivles you sell. A reference library for that wuld be indespensible.
