Collecting Precious Moments

As it turned out, the umbilical cord had wrapped around my son's neck, and as the contractions pushed him down, the cord grew tighter on his neck until he went into fetal distress. I didn't know what was going on, except that my fabulous doctor, Dr. Kramer, was in a hurry to get that baby out. My son's head was fully crowned by this time, and with the cord wrapped in such a manner, he wasn't coming any further without some help.

The doctor had to attach a plunger type instrument to the top of his head and pull - as in tug of war style, dragging me in the bed across the floor by a few feet! The nurses and my son's father were holding me in the bed so I didn't get pulled right out of it!

Blessed With A Miracle!

As soon as he got his head out, the doctor was able to snip the cord and the rest of my son came tumbling out into his arms. I was all but forgotten to the nurses at this point as they immediately set my son on an incubator cradle off to the side of the room and had to use a bulb type respirator to get him to take his first breath.

I can't tell you the relief we felt to hear that baby boy cry! I remember crying myself, with relief, and joy at the long awaited arrival of my son. I knew then we were Blessed With A Miracle!

ThePrecious Moments figurines we have come to know and love were first introduced in the fall of 1978. Manufactured in Taiwan, in a factory established for Precious Moments by the sculptor Yasuhei Fujioka-San where the adorable artwork was transformed into its three dimensional counterparts.

The Original 21 refers to the first 21 pieces introduced as figurines to the public as giftware. These are the pieces, along with their product numbers that make up those "Original 21" and began the legacy of precious moments collection

Precious Moments figurines are made of Porcelain bisque. There is no high gloss glaze coating as you might find on pieces like Lladro figurines, so they are more susceptible to dust and dirt and nicotine from smoking.

The recommended manner to care for your collection is to keep your figurines in a smoke free area, out of direct sunlight. Enesco and Precious Moments recommend if washing is needed to hand wash with warm water and mild soap, then wipe them with a damp cloth to remove any dust and dirt from the surface.


Try to keep the area beneath your washing padded with a towel or other soft surface, so that if you should drop one when cleaning, it will be somewhat protected from breakage.

Once you have finished cleaning your figurines, place them aside to dry completely before displaying again.

If you wish to maintain the value of your collection, you should save all original packaging materials. Having the box and packing materials that came with the figurine can substantially increase the resale value of any collection piece.

I did have almost all of my original packaging for my collection. After a divorce, my accommodations ( a studio condominium ) did not allow for the space needed to display my curio and collection. My ex-husband said he would hold them for me until I found a bigger place to keep them properly. He cleaned out the attic and discarded much of my packaging not realizing how much value they added to my collection.

Please make sure that you don't let anyone throw out your boxes and packing materials - not only for resale, but to keep your collection safe and secure should you ever move or want to give your collection to children or grandchildren.

To date, I have collected just about 100 figurines total in my Precious Moments treasures.

I can't give an exact number right this minute - you see I haven't seen them in quite some time. I mentioned the studio condominium, well, I've moved several times since the figurines got packed up - and this last time I haven't unpacked them and I've lost count.

Before spring of 2012, I plan on finally getting the curio cabinet and the larger pieces that my ex has in safe keeping, and I will take pictures to share when all my little babies are finally 'home'.

In doing my research for this lens, I came across one very special looking figurine - I have many friends online who will appreciate this figurines design - and I immediately thought of two people in particular - I know you know who I am talking to. This is a Limited Edition piece, with only 3,000 being made and distributed worldwide. I wish I could buy this one and send it to you - even if you wouldn't have the room to display it - Enjoy!
