Information, Resources, and Tips for Collecting Smurfs

Collecting Smurfs was my favorite hobby for over 13 years, and I have a great collection of these little blue characters from all over the world, including the first 3 smurfs ever made.

The Smurfs were created by Pierre Culliford, also known simply as Peyo, in 1958 as characters in a Belgian comic strip. The first Smurfs came on the market in 1965 with only 3 Smurfs, all from the same mold, but all painted differently. There are regular Smurfs, Special Smurfs, Promo Smurfs, Smurf Play sets, Super Smurfs, buildings, and many other items that people have been collecting around the world.

I have a good collection and will give you some tips on collecting, how to spot the counterfeit (fakes), as well as some stories of collecting, and links for buying The Smurfs.

Fun Smurf Facts

The first Smurfs were given away in 1965 by BP Gas Stations in Belgium, and the first Smurf to invade America was in 1978. Smurfette was made by Gargamel to invade the Smurfs. Papa Smurf transformed her from the evil Smurfette into a lovable one, and she was the only female Smurf until recently.

The Smurfs

The Smurfs are very collectible

1970's Raw Crying Smurf When I first started collecting The Smurfs I didn't know anything about them, except that they were cute, but over the years I learned a great deal.

Smurfs are little blue characters that are 3 apples high, which is the Belgian term for child sized. They live in King Gerarld's forest, or simply known as the forest. It was safe there because no poachers or hunters were allowed by order of King Gerald. Their biggest enemy is Gargamel. Over the years there have been several songs about Smurfs, and I remember watching a Smurf Show in Budapest, Hungary in the late 90's. They were very popular, and are becoming popular again with a whole new generation because of the movie due out in August of 2011.

Collecting Smurfs is very different than just buying them, as there are different manufacture dates, different manufacturers, and different countries they were made in. Some of the oldest Smurf PVC figures are quite valuable, and hard to find. I am still, years later, regretting a trade I made thus loosing a hard to find black Smurf for a common Smurf Child's dish set.

I remember someone telling me one time that they had a yellow Smurf...and I thought "yea right, there aren't any yellow Smurfs", and she told me she got it when she was a kid in some promotion or something. She said she didn't collect Smurfs and I could have it. Turned out that this is what is called a Raw Smurf, an unpainted one. The one she gave me was the Crying Smurf, which is valued at around $40 today.

How Old Are The Smurfs?

Papa Smurf is 542 years old (some say 546), and the other Smurfs are 100, except the babies and no one knows how old they are. Smurfs never age.

Smurf Doubles

Kids love playing with Smurfs

Childs Smurf Collection Photo by Kathy McGraw

These were a lot of my doubles that I gave to the kids to play with. The trick with doubles is that even if they look alike, they might have been made in different countries, or had some small paint or mold variance. A true collector might have several variances of the same Smurf, which aren't true doubles.

The molds for Smurfs have always been made by Schleich, the German toy company which has been making the molds since the beginning, and then the Smurfs are molded and painted in a few other countries including Sri Lanka, and Portugal.

Multilingual names for Smurfs

Learn the names of the smurfs in various countries

Collecting Smurfs in different countries you will need to know what they are called. There are over 25 variations of the Smurf name. When I went to Germany in 1988 I went into a store and saw a lot of Smurfs, but they had a name that I couldn't pronounce. I went to that store daily for a week, and by the weeks end I could pronounce the word Schlümpf. Then when I went to Italy I learned they had a different word, i Puffi. I was OK in the Netherlands because their word was easily recognizable.

  • Germany-Schlümpf

  • France-Schtroumpfs

  • Netherlands-Smurfen

  • Italy-i Puffi

  • Spain-Pitufos

  • America-Smurfs

Here are more Variations of the Smurf name by Country.

Two Manufacturers of the Smurf Mold

Bully was the manufacturer of Smurfs in W. Germany until 1980 when Schleich, the other main manufacturer, bought the exclusive rights. Before that, the Smurfs either had the Bully or the Schleich stamp.

When Collecting Smurfs One Thing To Look at is the Manufacturer Stamp

What is the Smurf Language?

Smurfs speak Smurf, not English. You can learn how to speak Smurf by substituting nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs with the word Smurf.

How to Spot Fake or Counterfeit Smurfs

And What to Look for When Buying from Auction Sites

Fake Smurfs can usually be spotted by the poor paint job, and sometimes by the material and manufacture's stamp. I have a couple fakes that I bought knowing they were fake, and some of them are made of plastic, and most of them are made in China. They are also usually missing the M on the McDonalds Promo Smurfs, and they are a little bit smaller than the real ones.

When you are buying Smurfs from anyone online, like ebay, use some normal caution. You don't want to pay top dollar for a Vintage Smurf in excellent condition only to find out that it isn't really in that condition. Be wary of people selling Vintage Smurfs that don't give good pictures. You want to see the paint job especially for raw smurfs (ones that aren't painted) and ones where the seller is selling them in lots.

China makes a lot of counterfeit items including Smurfs. There was one shipment of more than 33,000 Counterfeit Smurfs that was confiscated in 1997 in Belgium. It included several popular Smurfs, and the sad part for collectors is how many of the counterfeit ones weren't discovered and ended up being sold to unsuspecting buyers.

There are collectors that collect counterfeit Smurfs, and I know I have a few that I bought, not the PVC (rubber) ones, but other smurf items like the keychains. When I was living in one of the Eastern European countries it was full of counterfeit items from China.

Note: The 2008 Kinder Surprise (German Kids Candy Eggs with toys inside) had a lot of fakes made in Hong Kong-the originals were made in Germany.

Collecting Smurfs Find The Ones You Like

Smurfs Indian Chief Photo by Kathy McGrawCollecting Smurfs means if we don't barter for them, we buy them. I have only done a couple of barters, but mostly I buy them. I have bought mine in retail stores, e-bay, overseas, and on Amazon. Here are a couple links for both the little PVC Smurfs and More Smurf Items including Plush Smurfs and other Collectibles, as well as the new Smurf Movie Set.

I have sold parts of my collections before, and know that other collectors have as well. I always got excited when I found the little ones I didn't have. That's part of collecting, the thrill of the hunt!

Happy Smurfing!

Collecting Smurfs from e-bay

Follow a few auction rules. Check out the sellers feedback, try to find one that has been around for awhile and has a good reputation, and if at all possible look for one that takes paypal so you have some type of recourse if you have any problems with your item.

The Smurfs in the News

Melmac's favourite alien may be film star
Transformers, Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake, The Smurfs, The Muppets . . . if all those '80s favourites can forge comebacks, why not ALF? That's the hope of ALF - the character and the TV show - creator Paul Fusco, who is about to pitch a comeback ...
Sony Already Smurfing 'The Smurfs 3'; Script Being Smurfed By 'Over the Hedge ...
Before our megaplexes can even be graced by the currently in-production sequel to 2011 children's flick ?The Smurfs,? the film's studio Sony is really eager to turn the epic saga of these little blue individuals into a trilogy.
Hide Your Cats! ALF May Be Heading To The Big Screen
He's been crafting a story for years and, after the success of THE SMURFS GI JOE and TRANSFORMERS, is hoping to sell it to a studio soon. ?I think the timing is right. That's a big important thing, timing. There have been movies out there of characters ...
ALF Movie in the Works? Maybe
Along the lines of 21 Jump Street, The A-Team, The Smurfs, Dark Shadows, The Muppets, Alvin and the Chipmunks, the (now non-mutant) Ninja Turtles, etc., etc., etc., ALF could be the next retro property to find new life on the big screen.

Ah, something I never contemplated was spotting a fake Smurf. Sometimes it's not easy being an original, eh?
  • Patrick Jamieson Jan 30, 2012 @ 1:35 am | delete
I have just found my old collection of SMURFS.
I have one dressed like a King with a yellow crown, red cape, mushroom septure & gold hat. My family owned a BP petrol station during the 80s.
Is my Smurf King rare ?

I grew watching the Smurfs and I had a few different ones however I have since lost them. I am thinking about starting to build a collection again and this page is very helpful, thank you.

My smurf collection was lost/stolen in my move from LA to Boston by the movers who said they were "sorry." I've spent the last 5 years trying to rebuild the collection. It's been a long and painful process. It's funny because even though the new ones I buy off of ebay, etc., aren't my originals, I tell the story of each one to my partner (who doesn't mind my obsession). It's odd that after so many years, they still make me smile. Thanks for the website. It's super fun.
p.s. if anyone has any suggestions on where to find the older ones, please let me know! There's a few that I've found on ebay but are more than I can justify in spending for one.

I've never had a Smurf collection so I feel quite left out, but it was fun to learn their names in other languages. Got to agree with Malu, you are our honorary Smurfette! :) A most entertaining and informative page, blessed for being such fun.

Somewhere I have a piece of glass (flat) with Smurfette painted on it. I don't know if it is a part of some licensed thing or a bit of fan art or what it is.
  • KathyMcGraw Jul 3, 2011 @ 2:35 pm | delete
Kab- that's pretty cool, and yea probably hard to figure out unless it has some type of markings or it's listed in the Collectors Handbook somewhere.
