Start collecting toy soldiers or help someone else start their own collection

Toy soldiers are miniature military figurines. Toy soldiers are made depicting uniformed military personnel from military actions spanning many cultures, countries, and eras as well as other combat-related themes such as knights, cowboys, and pirates. Many of us are familiar with the simple plastic figures that are cheap and easy to find, but toy soldiers can also be highly realistic and detailed models.

Toy soldiers have been collected since ancient times. Early miniature soldiers were made from wood, stone, clay and metal for royalty and the very wealthy. However, by the end of the 18th century toy soldiers began to be mass-produced and made from all types of material, but the most common mass produced varieties are metal and plastic.

The Beginning Of Our Toy Soldier Collection

Collecting toy soldiersWe began collecting toy soldiers during a recent visit to Colonial Williamsburg where Noah found figurines of both Colonial and British soldiers from the American Revolution.

Inspired by this initial purchase we soon became interested in expanding our collection and so had to learn more about these miniature soldiers and where to find them.

That was when I decided to make a holiday gift guide to help other toy soldier collectors start and build their own collections.

Why encourage collecting toy soldiers?

  • Encourage study of history
  • Encourage study of other cultures and countries
  • Initiate discussion of background of wars and battles and the politics that cause them

Great idea, can't wait to get started

Grell Sutcliff says:

I think it would be fun, my father used to collected them and had a Civil War display in our basement. He set it all up and it was quite cool. I was thinking of starting to collect with him, but he died...so now I do it to remember him.

You have the best answers above!

I find them very cool. Plus it is a way to learn about history as well

Horrible idea, shouldn't encourage it

Serious collectors need a good guide

My brother had some when we were young and may still have them packed away somewhere.

We had toy soldiers when we were very young, I think they came from my grandfather... boy what those would be worth now, if we still had them.

When I was a little girl I wanted to have toy soldiers, but I kept getting barbies and dolls (that ended up in a pile of never use toys). So at 13, with my first baby sitter pay, I bought 1 lead soldier! My one and only, just so I could say I finally have one:)

Toy soldier collecting is great for hands on learning about history and really does encourage creative play that isn't media centered.

These would make a great collector's item! My brother collects them and have tons of these little guys. He's passing them on to my nephew. He loves them, too! Hey, your Tweets were one of the ones I followed from Twitter when I found Squidoo. I have just finished my first Lens. It would be nice if you'd drop by and say 'hi'. Sundae ;-)
